Which search engine really gives the best results?

With the introduction of Bing just recently, from Microsoft, many have been wondering about the results it gives, and how they compare to others such as Google or Yahoo!. Some people prefer Google for the simplicity (and the habit of using it), others prefer Bing for the added features and extra information it can provide, and the rest prefer Yahoo!... well, the rest just prefer Yahoo!.

An employee of Microsoft has set out to see which of the three companies truly gives the best results, with a handy website called Blind Search. The purpose of this website is for you to enter your search query, and it will provide you three different columns of results. You then choose the one which you think is the most appropriate for your needs, and once you've done that, the vote will be added to the international counter on the website, and your choice will be revealed.

This is a great little test (though, be warned, it's still in "very very beta") to see which users really prefer. Of course, this is all based on personal preference, and even so, if one search engine provides better results, you may still wish to use others for the features, etc. It's interesting to see the votes, so go ahead and try it out, and post back here on which you find yourself choosing the most!

[Update]: You will not be able to see the percentage of votes currently, as the owner of the website has posted the following message: "Some douche is gaming the system, I've removed the ability to see the results until I sort this out. Meanwhile you can still have fun playing with blind search. Feel free to blame the douche for ruining it for everybody. Meanwhile, I wouldn't take this a scientific whats-e-ma-jing, it's just a bit of observational fun."

I generally don't use Yahoo, but according to this, they gave me the best results. I do like Bing's presentation of the data though, compared to the other two, which you can't get from the "blind" search.

Same for me! Still...

I've tryed Bing for a couple of times, but I will remain to Google. After years of using it, typing Google's adress is in my reflex.

Yahoo gave me better results too! But I like Bing's display more.

#2.4 kenboldt on 08 Jun 2009 - 18:08
I did 10 searches, read the titles and addresses of all the results each time before making a decision as to which really provided the best results for what I was looking for, and 9 times it was google, and one was Yahoo. While this is obviously not statistically significant on a global scale or anything like that, I think it is funny that MS put so much work into revamping the most basic of tasks on the internet and yet they still failed to get me the information that I need.

I forget where I read it, but someone put it nicely that in typical MS fashion, they took something that is simple and basic from an end-user perspective, and in trying to make it more "user friendly" all they achieved is making it far more complex and convoluted.
#2.5 andrewbares on 08 Jun 2009 - 19:29
Google had the worst results.
(4 replies) #3 C++ on 08 Jun 2009 - 04:15
Quite simply, Google gives the best results.

They all do a fine job when you type in something that you would arguably not even need to search for and would know exactly where to find in this day and age of the internet, and the only reason you searched for it is because it was easier for you to type in half a word and click the mouse 3 times (once to search, once for the "Did you mean..." and once for the actual result) than it would have been to type in a fully formed URL and navigate through whatever site's menu system or own search.

Examples would be the definition of a word (answers.com, dictionary.com), a list of movies with a certain star (IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes) or a news item (CNN, BBC).

But when you type in something that you genuinely would not find otherwise, such as the contact details of an old high school friend that is not on Facebook, not on Twitter and basically is not indexed anywhere online other than one entry they made to the guest book of somebody's Geocities page in 2001, Google consistently finds that information better than the rest.

Go Google.
#3.1 Calum on 08 Jun 2009 - 05:05
I completely disagree with that whole post.

Bing has many more improvements over Google and the relevancy of Bing is better than Google, for me.

Did you test it, using Blind Search?
#3.2 C++ on 08 Jun 2009 - 06:11
I did use it and I got a few Google wins and a few Yahoo wins. None for Bing. That is not to say that I don't like Bing. I've used it, it looks clean and I like the video previews. But it's only a great keystroke saving engine, not a great search engine, as I said in my initial comment.

While it generally gave me more results than Yahoo, it still gave me fewer matches on obscure searches than Google and there were certain queries that it literally could not find a single result for, while Google had several matches.

Case and point: My friend's Xfire username. Letters and numbers, not a vanilla "Lindsay Lohan News" search. Bing returned 3 matches, 2 of them YouTube links and none my friend. Yahoo returned 5 matches, last one being my friend. Google found 85 matches, first being my friend on Xfire and several next ones my friend as well, on other networks.

I also disagree. I have been using and comparing Bing to Google for many days now, running a number varied searches, to include images and video, and for the most part, have found that both engines do a very good job of returning the anticipated returns. I would not say that Google is any better than Bing with regard to search result returns.

That said, I would say that the way that Bing displays information from the search is much better than Google. The interface for Bing is cleaner, sleeker, and frankly, easier to use. Not that Google could not remedy this quickly, but for now, Bing has the better interface.

In all, think that it is wonderful to finally have a legitimate alternative to Google. Having two competent search engines on the Internet gives the user broader access to relevant information.

Go Bing.

Google had the worst results.
#4 dogmai79 on 08 Jun 2009 - 04:29
I have not used any other engine other than bing since it's release. I haven't needed to. There hasn't been anything yet that I have needed to find that it hasn't come up at the very top of the list or within the top 3 results. All the other added bonuses are cool too. Google can move on over, I'm done with them even as I was thinking how can I not google, I don't know if I can. Bing is easier to type too lol
#5 Tech Star on 08 Jun 2009 - 04:39
Bing/Google gave me the best result. Sometimes Yahoo! gives me the best also. It all depends on what I am searching for though, as they all have a different advantage.

A search for "Neown" (accidentally misspelled of Neowin) came up with this site on both Bing and Yahoo!, but Google didn't pick that up.

A search for "blind search" showed the same site Blind Search site I'm using to test as 3rd in Bing, and I didn't spot in Y! or Google.

A search for "Kroger" gave more information in Bing than the other two.

"Define sluice" shows the exact mean in the first result for Bing, and a random jumble in the other 2.

So I'm voting for Bing

Bing's not perfect of course. It doesn't catch "on10" at all right, among some others. But I guess I like the way Bing phrases its results so I don't have to bother going into the site if I'm looking for a certain trivia.
#7.1 guruparan on 08 Jun 2009 - 11:48

Google cant even analyze "Neown" to "Neowin" :-)

Yea,,,,u r right...even Google gives the best result for Local search like if i search for any "Bangla" word..it gives me far better result...
#9 Eddo89 on 08 Jun 2009 - 04:48
Interesting.

6 searches, I selected each engine twice. My first 3 selections are based on my exam topics. My selection criteria is based on how repetitive (anything with Wikipedia and ask.com at the same time is shot), how many ads are there and just general reputation of the results.

Is amusing though that one of the results with Yahoo is found by Google. Then a Google result is found by Bing.
PS: Of course, if I'm properly doing research, I would be more likely to use something like Google Scholar.

PSS: Did one more, Yahoo was really terrible in this one. Bing was by far the best. I searched "Spurs", Yahoo gave me nothing but San Antonio bar one. While Bing gave me some different results before going down the SA line. Google was really random and gave something on abortion. Guess Google is more diverse, Bing is more precise whilst Yahoo may be best in getting something very popular.
#10 Raa on 08 Jun 2009 - 04:49
So really, you need all 3 if you're doing a huge research project

Google FTW (for most other tasks!
#11 Recon415 on 08 Jun 2009 - 04:51
Out of 3 times, I went with Google twice and once with Bing. Quite frankly I think Microsoft has come a long way.
#12 Calum on 08 Jun 2009 - 05:02
Bing came out on top every time, but twice for me - Yahoo! won both of those times.

I'm shocked Yahoo! seems to be better than Google, for me and a lot of people. I am glad that Bing beat them both, for me, though.

I just hope everyone can really test it unbiasedly, as I am sick of people jumping on the bandwagon, stating "Google has the best results, ya can't beat it". For some, it may, but for a lot of people, it really doesn't and many out there don't know / haven't compared, they're just saying that because they are used to Google and assume it has the best results because they use it exclusively.
#13 mocax on 08 Jun 2009 - 05:37
i love bing's "sex" thumbnail browser.....
(2 replies) #14 ncc50446 on 08 Jun 2009 - 05:38
Did 5 searches.
Bing: 0
Google: 2
Yahoo!: 3
I was surprised that Yahoo! did as well for me as it did. If it wasn't for Yahoo!'s homepage having way too much on it, I would use Yahoo! more often. I just prefer Google's simple layout. Bing is not bad, huge improvement over Live, but think I'll stick with Google for now.

Presently Google of course which owns 78.16% of market share. Not many can be wrong... I'll only start switching search engine or any product for that matter if alternative is really better than present one which i use , till then will just try it casually
#15.1 FloatingFatMan on 08 Jun 2009 - 06:59
Pretty faulty logic there. Of course many people can be wrong about something! Look at religion! :p

Most people use Google because they're a household name, simple. Even my technologically incompetent brother knows about Google; he's never heard of Bing or Yahoo! though.

Google and Bing were pretty much on par for me but yahoo wasn't to far off. All three engines gave me sites relevant to what I searched for but google and bing gave me sites that are much more popular than yahoo did.

Google's index gets updated in almost realtime. No other search engine can it match it at present.

I tried a few searches myself and from my experience Google was the best with Bing slightly behind. Yahoo, however, wasn't even close to the other two.

google has consistently given me better results. bing is second, and i have yet to choose yahoo as the best result.
#22 gtxvortex on 08 Jun 2009 - 08:35
Yea Google is on top atm. I used bing as my default search engine for a week was not bad at all, only thing is it did not reslove as much info as i would of expected.

I found my self going back to google in the end, i think the more we search on bing the more it will grow.
#23 satanist on 08 Jun 2009 - 08:53
1) Google (G for search God)
2)Yahoo! (better search then Bing but gives me useless features)
2)Bing (Poor search but has some handy features)

I searched for the company I work for and Bing was the only one to include it in the results.

But searching for a Track Mania team, Bing and Google brought up the old forums we no longer use, although Google did bring up the current ones as well. Yahoo did best on this one, showing the current forums only in results.

I think it would be the most obvious verdict even if this voting revealed the results 10 years down the future with infinite number of comparisons with the likes of bing and dings. The winner by far is Google. Just searching few very basic things and u`ll see the difference.

bing is supposed to be the very intelligent engine.. but try this..

i think giving the search engine points on things which are really easy to find is really stupid. we need to look for things we cant easily locate on the web. thats the true test of the search engine`s power.

i just searched my own name and google being the "dumb" engine.. gave me exactly what anyone would need.. my face book profile. well i know thats nothing too great.. but when u are looking for someone facebook is someplace u could find out something about them.

compared to google .. the " intelligent " bing result was.. some random forum post which i had made way back in 2006 about something related to windows.. some troubleshooting issue. lmao.. should have guessed that Intelligent has to involve Microsoft in it.

I am a full-time language student, studying Slovak. Over the course of the last few days, have run numerous searches for obscure material related to the Slovak language. Bing consistently provides better results over Google, and displays said material in a much more user friendly manner.
#28 +metal_dragen on 08 Jun 2009 - 10:54
I searched for upcoming Xbox360 games (Wolfenstein, Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood, Forza 3), and each time I thought the results from Google were the best, with Yahoo! close behind and Bing last.

Both Google and Yahoo! gave results from the more popular and mainstream gaming sites near the top (Gamespot, IGN, 1up, etc.), while Bing only included those types of sites in 3 of the listings. The rest of the listings were for smaller blogs and cheat code sites.

In my opinion, the results from Google and Yahoo! were more relevant in terms of the information I was looking for, though Google was the best in my opinion. That's why it's still my default search engine.

I picked google on 11 out of 12 searches. At least in binary terms that's considered statistically significant. p< 0.05.
However, I'm pretty sure this would be considered trinary distribution, since I'm given 3 choices.

I done it 6 times and every single time unknowingly selected Google.....

I have used many search engines and always find Google's links to be more relevant.. especially when troubleshooting errors in hardware/software...

Looks like Google will be king for some time still...

Keep in mind that Google's DB >>>>> Bing's by a huge margin, and that they've refining it for ages. Bing needs to widen its database and its indexing software to come close to Google's omnipresence.

Bing. Searched for my school's web page!
#40 duhk on 08 Jun 2009 - 23:35
Bing is very good. Google is too. Bing looks like it would be a great tool for school work or some type of research and Google is good for more of the obscure searches. They're both good search engines. Bing really does get me the information I am looking for, without the irrelevant stuff. And so does Google, but it includes more irrelevant information than bing. I guess the Bing commercials are true.

Bing for school
Google for pr0n
