DTV deadline is June 12, still people are unprepared

After years of early warning to all U.S. citizens, and dozens of TV stations broadcasting the deadline to switch from analog signal to full digital signal for TV, millions of Americans will be left out in the dark. The original date was scheduled for February 17, 2009, but days before the conversion, President Obama pushed to delay the changeover forward to June 12, 2009.

Even with months of advance warning, millions of Americans waited till the last minute to update their dated television sets to add a digital box. Analysts still predict that millions of Americans still use analog signal and are unprepared for the changeover. As of Friday June 12, 2009 at 12:01am, all full-powered analog signals will terminate transmissions, leaving all dated TV sets with "rabbit ear" antennas in the dark.

President Obama said that there will be no further delays in the transition, "[...]I want to be clear: there will not be another delay." said President Obama.

The TV Stations want this, it will save them so much money in having to maintain only a single transmission.

Sounds like America is not ready for "Change".

It was Obama who already delayed it past the date it was supposed to occur back in february, which was a delay from the original date in 2006. This should have happened a long time ago.

are they gonna reschedule popular shows so that people can watch them a few weeks later once they've finally gotten the digital box?
#3.1 Soldiers33 on 12 Jun 2009 - 08:11
obviously not. its not thier fault people are so stupid, and do not switch over, even though when they have been warned. I wish they would bring the UK swtichover closer aswell.
(2 replies) #4 CyberDragon777 on 12 Jun 2009 - 08:23
Just do the switch already!
If people didn't get prepare during all these years, they won't do it now until their TV screens only show white noise.
#4.1 Atlonite on 12 Jun 2009 - 17:56
not everyone can afford to do the switch and evan then have you seen what happens digital sigs in heavy rain or snow

Yeah, it must be really hard to scrape up $40 over a period of years.

well im sorry but its their old sodding fault, if they couldnt be bothered to get off their fat arses and stop shoving twinkies down their pie holes, then tough love
#5.1 Ender.Wiggin on 12 Jun 2009 - 19:16
Seriously have you ever tried a Twinkie?

Riot.

Seriously. Never underestimate the American Idol-watching crowd, deprived from what keeps it subdued.

LOL they'll be on the net slowin it down for the rest of us ofcourse
#11 acnpt on 12 Jun 2009 - 12:31
I wish they would hurry up in the UK.
Majority of people have digital on their Main Tvs.
Howver power of digital signals won't be increased, until analogue has been switched off. Which means most bedroom/portable tvs can't pickup digital signal because of their small aerials.

Already been done here in swe, was a pretty smooth transition without any problems... well for me anyway, heh.

You may not be aware that 80% of Americans are blithering idiots with attention deficit syndrome. They are incapable of comprehending written instructions.

Truth.

Seems to me the delay only cost a bunch of money & did little else... Personally I haven't seen any big ad or awareness campaign since the original deadline passed, but the opposite, with fewer people paying attention.

While it may be harder to feel sorry for someone relying on broadcast when their TV "goes out", not every cable outfit is going to pump analog -- for their customers, those TVs without cable boxes will go dark. Even if you went out & bought a TV with digital tuning (QAM), many cable providers DRM all but a handful of stations, so no way to access digital channels without a box. For many (most?) going digital doesn't mean a thing... In theory you'd get a better picture, but, less signal loss also lets cable & satellite providers send a partial video frame, &/or use higher compression.

If it wasn't for interference in signal, I would have to say that analog signal brings better quality in audio and video than digital.

That's impossible. The minumum standard for ATSC is a 480p picture with 2 channel sound...so DVD quality. Not to mention guaranteed picture and sound quality as well...so I think you need to upgrade your TV/sound system or have your vision checked.
#14.2 Atlonite on 12 Jun 2009 - 18:04
HDTV can be sent over UHF along with DD5.1 sound so dont say it cant happen so let me see that's HiDef tv + 5.1dolby digital sound and all on a analog signal it's also less susceptable to rain fade

you are right ofcourse, analog is always better than digital ... in utopia. Unfortunately in the real world there always is signal degradation
#15 cork1958 on 12 Jun 2009 - 13:08
It's done. Let's get off this topic!!

For crying out loud. How difficult could this have been, even if you HAVE been using just rabbit ears, up until now?
#16 paustin on 12 Jun 2009 - 13:36
Not a suprise. You knew delaying it wouldnt do a thing. Some people just need their hands help no matter what.
#17 Rudy on 12 Jun 2009 - 14:35
To be honest, you'd push it to 2020 and you'd still have people "unprepared". There's no point in waiting, I wish Canada would do it faster
(1 reply) #18 Jugalator on 12 Jun 2009 - 14:41
I kind of enjoy these sort of things, just for waking up the clueless grey masses with a no longer working TV. Stupidity should not be rewarded anyway. It should be punished. Again. And again.

I'm not sure if that makes me evil, but I've done too many things to not go to hell anyway. :p

Digital box.......... hmmmmmmmmmmm, that is what I told my girlfriend. I said, honey can you change your box from analog to digital...........................LMAO!!!!!
#20 C_Guy on 12 Jun 2009 - 14:50
millions of Americans will be left out in the dark

How is this even possible? Even in Canada, I've lost count how many public service announcements or advertisements I've seen for the DTV switch. There's been more than enough time and more than enough information. Just do it and get it over with.
(4 replies) #21 Scutley on 12 Jun 2009 - 16:36
The people who didn't get't a DTV converter/Satellite/Cable/IPTV etc.. by now are the ones who are too lazy to get off their butts and go out and get one.
#21.1 Atlonite on 12 Jun 2009 - 18:07
or maybe they can't afford to perhaps they are house bound or bed ridden
#21.2 shhac on 12 Jun 2009 - 18:22
If they can't afford one, not being able to watch TV will free up their time to get a job.

Atlonite said,

So what, house bound and bed ridden people have to survive with no contact from the outside world? Nobody brings them the necessities of life? Nobody takes care of them? If they can't save $40 over a period of years perhaps they shouldn't be watching tv.

shhac said,

I absolutely agree. There is nothing more than the 70 year old plus population not working. Those lazy people on fixed income. They either need to just die or go out and get a job.

Of course, when they do, they will be significantly more qualified (work experience) than the mass number of individuals who don't at least have a 4 year college education... (last I checked this was a lot of individuals). They would get the majority of the jobs and we would have a lot of younger individuals out of work. I am personally all for this.

On a serious note, Shhac, you do realize that the converter box is pretty basic TV... right? We are not talking about your fiber connected 120+ channel, 20 meg internet connection and free calling to anyone in the States (typical sub $100 plan). We are talking about a few local channels and PBS. From 4 to about twenty channels.
#22 Biotoxic_hazard_835 on 12 Jun 2009 - 22:22
I already have a digital tuner TV set and cable tv so it makes no difference to me. Ample time has been given so people can get ready if they didn't then too bad for them.
#23 M_Lyons10 on 12 Jun 2009 - 23:27
Not that I consider this technology ready... What with the random interruptions, the bizarre scaled down viewing when the signal hickups, etc. And oh let's not forget what happens if (God forbid) you get a phone call on your cell phone... BUT this had been warned about for like 3 years. There is just NO excuse for not being prepared by now... You could even get the box all but paid for by the government... *sigh*
#24 ataris_kid on 13 Jun 2009 - 00:30
About time.. Damn.
#25 bertmace on 13 Jun 2009 - 04:46
on the 11th I had 11 dt channels on the 12th I now have 4 on outside ant and hd tunner card with qam it a 90 mile ant the stations are 30 miles away so I think they have cut power not put more out
#26 bertmace on 13 Jun 2009 - 17:27
If you have vcm you are not ready because your TV guild has not been updated to the new rf channel like 6.1 rf uhf 38 and now it is vhf 6 but it thinks it is still 38
#27 hotdog963al on 13 Jun 2009 - 22:01
Shame there is literally NOTHING good shown on TV. Ever.
