Now that the iPhone 3G S has been announced, pre-orders have caused the device to be sold out according to a report by Apple Insider. Any pre-orders that were made starting today, June 13 will not ship on the June 19 launch, and consumers will have to wait for up to two weeks to receive their order. If you do pre-order a 3G S, you'll receive an email once it's back in stock, saving you from having to stand in line.
Apple stores will open at 8 AM, and AT&T stores will open at 7 AM for the launch of the iPhone 3G S. Best Buy and Walmart will also have the iPhone 3G S for sale on June 19. Unfortunately, iPhone 3G users will have to shell out an additional $200 if they want a 3G S right away, but that still hasn't detered consumers from pre-ordering the new iPhone.
Back when the iPhone 3G launched, it was sold out in 21 states. When the original iPhone launched, it too sold out in Apple Stores in 10 states in 4 days.

Goldman Sachs estimated around 700,000 units sold for the original iPhone. Working out the iPhone 3G initial sales is a little more interesting - 1800 AT&T stores and 188 Apple stores sold them. Estimate the number in stock per store and have a shot but it's anyone guess -- and Apple's flagship stores on Fifth Av., Prince Street and 14th Street apparently had a lot more in stock then any AT&T store.
The 3GS is anyones guess. If you assume around 40 phones per AT&T store you're looking at around 700,000 phones (the same as the initial release) so a safe guess would be that the number is probably similar this time around. On the flip side, Palm sold between 60,000 and 200,000 Pre's during their sell-out period according to Piper Jaffray.
At this point I would think it is a pretty safe bet that Apple are less reliant on obscure marketing techniques such as what you're suggesting. I can thoroughly understand if this were the case for the original iPhone but at this point it's a household name. The better argument is whether or not going from a 3G to a 3GS is worth it and I can tell you that I definitely won't be -- and I'm not even on a contract (Australia).
I should also clarify that all these numbers are from independent consulting firms that specialise in analysing this kind of market behaviour.

lol.
lmao
you sir, fail more than most people.
I like guys like you that make assumptions, lol. You're freaking awesome. Don't get me wrong now, I am an iPhone user myself. I got the phone when it first came out and it works without any issues! However, since I've had this phone for over 2 years, I was desperately looking fwd to this new phone but somehow, it has failed to meet my expectations.
It's a shame your cell phone provider sucks - many of the other countries the phone is sold in will work out of the box just fine with both MMS and tethering. The world is larger than the US.
Maybe you should direct your rage at the company that's dropping the ball (AT&T) rather than the one that has things working as advertised (Apple). So long as you're venting your frustrations in the wrong direction AT&T has no reason to get their asses in gear.
So now, I have 54megs of ram total, ill start it up, no apps its at 38.2. ActiveSYNC always has to be open even thou i havent hooked this phone up to my computer since ived had it(its was an insurance replacement ot my nokia n75 so owned it for now 7 months). I REALLY like this phone, but i hate not being able to disable AS. Even thou it didnt bother me still, bugs me. Anyway, Ill have messages opened and im sitting at 46.8megs haha. I havelike 2 months worth of texts about 15k from both months. Its suprising.
All that's left for Apple now is to apply for a patent for their marketing scheme and their all set. May I suggest iScalp as a name for this? How about "The Apple Price Fixing Promise: We will never be overstocked." What, too many words for the iPod zombies, eh? Alright, how about a dancing logo shaped like a bag of cash that's dancing with an iPod Zombie, and as part of "the dance" the iPod Zomnbie periodically hands over some large bills for what is essentially something he already has: A delicious, delicious apple. How's that? I know it's a bit abstract, but I think it should appeal to the brain-dead types who keep buying this stuff. No thinking required, just watch the pretty pictures and in no time you'll want an iPod but won't know why. Sounds like a plan to me.
except for the faster CPU. having HSDPA, a camera with video recording doesnt make the iphone better than what's been out there for a couple of years.
I've already had that for quite some time now. Buy a "new" phone?
Nope. But if you like the iPhone and would prefer to remain with an iPhone, and they release one which HAS extra features then you'd want to buy it.
Why is this so hard for some people to understand? A HTC device might well have this stuff, but most HTC stuff runs Windows Mobile.. and seeing as using Windows Mobile is about as enjoyable as pulling your fingernails off with a pair of pliers, it's not hard to see why people have flocked to the iPhone and don't want to go near anything else for the mean time.
