Have you been frustrated with AT&T lagging behind in iPhone feature deployment, and the upgrade pricing for the iPhone 3G S? Well there is a bit of good news. According to MacWorld, AT&T will be offering the MMS feature at no extra cost to customers who have a text messaging plan.

In AT&T's iPhone 3G S FAQ, it states:

Later this summer, as part of the 3.0 software, AT&T will make multimedia messaging (MMS) available at no extra cost to customers with a text messaging bundle

Thankfully for the consumer, text plans for AT&T start at $5 per month for 200 text message. However, there is uncertainty as to whether MMS will be counted differently from regular text messages. We also don't know what specific date "later this summer" is referring to, whether it'd be on launch day, which is June 19, or sometime in July or August. There is also uncertainty as to when the tethering feature will be rolled out. As reported by Boy Genius Report, the reason AT&T gave for the delaying in rolling out MMS support was "because AT&T has to manually remove all the 'Opt Out MMS codes' on each account."

The bottom line is that this is good news for those who have been getting the short end of the stick lately when it comes to AT&T and the iPhone's features. As we previously reported, this isn't stopping consumers from pre-ordering the iPhone 3G S, causing AT&T to be sold out of the devices.

iphone is the best phone I've ever used.

...And believe me I have used hundreds of phones...

But the speed and simplicity on the iphone can't be matched.

+1...and simplicity...well it was made by the same company that figured users only needed one mouse button, so guess I could see that in it. As for real phones? No thanks, I'll stick to my RIM curve.

Finally, that's one good thing about AT&T... now they need to focus on the other dozen bad things and they'll be fine!

I'm not really sure this is news. AT&T started offering a "messaging plan" over a year ago that included SMS and MMS. It was offered for BlackBerry users at least, I assumed iPhone would be the same story. Then again MMS and Data Teathering have been on AT&T's Blackberry for years (along with copy/paste) so you never know.

Um, this is the same of all phones on their network. MMS is included in the "Messaging" plans across the board.

Indeed. Congratulations to AT&T for adding the feature everyone has had for years and letting your customers use it for free...just like everyone else has been for years. Ahem.

Hmm, funny.
If one replaces AT&T with Apple, it is still true

This wont be any different then there other smartphone plans. this is not an added feature just for iphone users.

"Get the word out, any way you like

200 text, picture, video, and Instant Messaging (IM) messages per month. Additional messages are 10 cents each."

I have a windows mobile smartphone and have a text plan and my text plan includes mms . This is with att wireless. I am also getting an iphone 3gs. So basically everything will be the same with an iphone as with a windows mobile smartphone. billing wise anyway.

So dont get excited.

Doesn't every other major carrier already include MMS in their messaging bundles? I know T-Mobile has done so for quite some time.

All atts text packages include this but the iphone ones. All they are doing is making the iphone plans the same as their other smartphone plans.

I have AT&T and I have to say, even though I have had them for the for a long time, even before the buyout from Cingular, I have been getting more disgruntled with them more and more. At least they are doing this one right.

Yeah, same. I liked them much more as Cingular. Noticing the customer service aspect declining severely, and they are getting more expensive.

I might not be renewing my contract.

Apparently just the name AT&T has this corrupting influence on companies...very X-Files...

Free M&Ms with the new iPhone?
Wow, what a deal. Just don't eat the green ones.

O2's MMS are not free. It uses 4 standard SMS messages for every one MMS.

I think customers will be outraged if AT&T charges extra for MMS on top of Text Messaging Plan, so the "no extra cost" was expected.

Not as for tethering, I got a feeling they will want to charge extra on top of the data plan, which will outrage customers no doubt. Not many people will tether their phones to laptops to saturate their network, so I don't think they should worry about it.

I'll stick with my Samsung Jack, unlimited texting w/ MMS, unlimited internet usage w/ tethering, and 1000 nation-wide minutes a month. No hassle, no bogus waiting.

ATT makes me mad right now. I have the blackjack 2 and I pay for unlimited texting. This does not include media, only text, which sucks. I do not need/want internet on my phone but they insist that I have to get it for MMS.

I would like to get an iPhone as well, and wouldnt mind paying $30/month (Even thought thats high IMO) but I just recently signed for blackjack 2.
