It's that time again, another week and another Windows 7 build leak. They are really starting to flow now leading up to RTM and this time there are changes to report.Last week we had 7229 leak and this week it's build 7232.winmain.090610-1900 that has wriggled out of Microsoft's Redmond HQ and is being distributed across the net.
The most obvious visual change is that a new default wallpaper has been set and there is no more betta fish. The new wallpaper is named harmony. Windows 7 is still on track for a July RTM, and it's possible that it may even RTM by the end of June. Microsoft has announced that it will be available in stores October 22nd.

I think the logos a bit *in your face* for my liking.
Yep, I'd love it without the logo in the middle. Can someone shop it out?
I agree, very nice without logo.
the logo doesnt integrate quite well into the background, it's like jumping over me. i don't like it much
Beats the heck out of da fish.
It's average for a reason: it fits every possible screen format (4:3, 16:10, 16:9, etc.) and resolution. (Windows 7, unlike Vista, has no wallpaper designed specifically for widescreen formats.) As someone that actually changed displays (from CRT to 16:9 LCD) during the beta cycle (and has one computer running Windows 7 that still has a 4:3 CRT display), having to change wallpaper because I changed display format is a pain. However, that has been all to often required, because the wallpaper is all too often designed to look good only in particular screen formats. (It's not a Windows-specific issue.) Harmony, on the other hand, is....."harmonious", and with any screen resolution (from 800x600 to 1920x1080 and beyond), or screen format.
yeh it was smart originally for MS to leak builds and get widespread feedback - but now it just seems like they're exploiting the public to get feedback and generate mass hype - not cool.

wtf. some people complain for the sake of complaining. The leaks shouldn't trouble you at all. If there were none you'd be complaining that you'd only been given an RC months ago. Personally i've been trying various leaks and checking that they work on all my hardware. TBH i hope all future versions of windows are exposed in this way.
personally, i just think there's a difference between a few 'subtle' leaks here and there, and a blatant pushing out of builds to artificially generate hype and get free testing - just not 'professional'

Oh so you think prolonged exposed testing is a bad thing? You just can't win with some people.
Let say I've a product, before i sell it, Id send it out to the masses to use. Find the bugs and let me know about them so in the end i can make my product the best it can be.
The more ppl testing it the better it is for me.
Personally i love testing Microsoft products. we get leaks to test, they get the end result and make it better, becasue of us. Simple. wheres the problem ?

Have you actually considered that these are just simple leaks by people who have the builds but aren't supposed to really be leaking them and not Microsoft trying to sneak it out and get more widespread opinion?
You assume that MS is leaking these when it's much, much more likely that Microsoft is simply giving out test builds through TAP and to other partners, and employees of those partners (usually ones in China and Russia, it seems) leak them out. The frequency of the leaks is increasing because Microsoft is sending out test builds more frequently as they move to RTM and enter "crunch time" to make sure everything works.
Remember what happens when you assume - although your assumption isn't doing anything to me in this case...just u.

since when has being cool been a requirement in business? Vista was not widely tested, it didnt exactly meet the requirements of the general public. Windows 7 has been tested to extreme lengths due to all the leakage. The leaked products are incomplete codebases and are timebombed and will stop working. Can one of you please explain to me how global userbase testing is a) a bad thing b) uncool?
given the number of 3rd parties involved here, where is your evidence that MS is responsible for the leaks? and why should they stop them?
+1
i didn't mean LITERALLY cool, geez relax mate, these are just comments.
it's just... unprofessional? like ok a few subtle leaks here and there to quietly gauge user opinions would be a normal sort of thing... but leaks EVERY WEEK? every few builds there is a new leak... and it's just like getting a bit much.
you know when someone tells a joke, and they say it so many times you tell them "yeh ok mate we've heard it before... you can shutup now"
same sort of thing... we've seen leaked builds before... maybe key builds are ok... but leaking EVERY WEEK is getting a bit over the top now.
although from the responses here obviously people will cream their pants when the next build gets leaked again (probably tomorrow or the day after). how dreadfully exciting. lucky MS has a super loyal fanbase (Y)

Yeah, sure. Because Microsoft is generating hypes by publicly telling the world about new builds and making them publicly available. [/sarcasm]
See, unlike the users here on Neowin who download these builds the moment they coem out, the rest of the world is choosing not to and/or still using the Beta or the RC.
Please, stfu, you have nothing intelligent to say if all you can think of is "subtle" leaks here and there. You're just whining because you're not being spoiled with a changelog so you can't bring yourself to just try it out on your own.
Totally lame and pathetic. You people just love to whine so you'll look for any reason to do so.
Has it ever occurred to you for even one second that Microsoft doesn't want these builds leaked? No way! Oh wait. This is the internetz, where we download stuff for free so much that we begin to expect it and treat it as our right, that we are entitled to these things. Well, newsflash, ass, we're not.
itss soooo...... ummm XP ish ....
they need sum serious work on the logo !

Whats wrong with Windows XP? xD
What's 'XP-ish' about Windows 7 or this new wallpaper?

The logo is the same one that Microsoft has used since XP (and is also used for *all* of the Windows products, client and server, of that generation, and since; it actually marks a return of sorts to cross-product thematic wallpaper, or has everyone fogotten that Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 had the same default wallpaper, save for color, at one point? Not Bliss, but Metal Logo; in XP's case, it was blue, in ther case of Server, it was a silver color).

Now, for some brand new icons to match the new Paint, Wordpad etc ones please, Microsoft? Thank you
Now, for some brand new icons to match the new Paint, Wordpad etc ones please, Microsoft? Thank you
when are they going to give us back the network acivty icon on the system tray?
there is a lot of posts on the windows 7 forums asking for this small feature, are Ms running an internal compo to see who gueses the right number of posts relating to this or what? becasue at the moment they havent done anything about it.
but lets get excited like little school kids over the new wallpaper on a build that wasnt ment for general public use.
Yeah good job because it won't be available on the interweb until the end of eternity. Right.
Well gee, aren't you clever. I'm sure you're proud of yourself for that witty comment.
I think the reason for the big logo is that MS knows that a large percentage of users change the wallpaper anyway, so it's more geared toward showing potential PC-buyers in shops what they're getting and re-establishing the Windows-brand. Of course it would be nice if they release the same wp without the logo....
My thoughts exactly. So easy to just delete the layer with the logo and give users a choice.
See, it's people like you who start the whole EU antitrust thing.
Jesus. People aren't such stupid buffoons. They HAVE an effing choice, it's not like they think they're locked down to every little thing that comes with their computer.
The EU would be better off handing out leaflets educating people on alternate options, rather than bitch about something so ridiculous.

But for those who like something less in the face, there is this: http://nyolc8.deviantart.com/art/Windows-7-style-124888564
It matches the feel of the windows website and fits in nicely with a home environment.
Ultimatley though, people will want something more personal than a corporate logo so they will explore the various windows Themes or just stick a family photo on there. Shops, however, are likely to be displaying the default settings so the PC or Laptop gets a bit of extra branding.
It's win-win in my opinion
This may be the first Windows OS I actually go out and buy when it comes out instead of waiting until I get it through school, work, new computer, or some kind of promotion...
Try using that wallpaper on your desktop and then compare it with the welcome screen (Ctrl + Alt + Del).

OMG you're right. I don't think anyone noticed that. Well done.
Whole heartedly +1
It's good to see the refreshing consistent design of windows 7 starting to filter through to all parts of the OS.

I thought that too, it would rock sitting alongside the login screen on my dual monitor setup
Here ya go.
It's feature complete, and very stable.

Not only "can", u should install it man..it's damn good.
You want them to make it unstable before you install it? Well, ok, I guess. Some people like living on the edge.

Pens had just won ther Stanley Cup.
Notice the trees in the northwesst (green section) of the logo. In fact, notice the designs in each section; match them up with the states indicated in each region. In short, the penguin has a reason for being where he is.
It looks good now; I have it as my default, logo and all.
It's also personally fitting (entering into my second decade of being involved in various Microsoft betas, going back to the original Windows NT 3.1).
P.S. this was meant to be a reply to above...why can't we delete comments?
"OH NO MICROSOFT IS NAMING EVERYTHING SIMILIAR TEH DOOMS!"
THIS WINDOWS PC HAS A WINDOWS WALLPAPER! WHAT THE !@#$. WHY WOULD THEY DO SOMETHING SO STUPID????
[/sarcasm]
But yeah, it is and always has been, tacky.

Just you, 'cause you have no creativity.
Please re-read post :p
What i was saying is that everyone changes their wallpaper anyway so those people moaning about the new default paper need to just change it lol.
Reading my comment back though i did format it a little on the confusing side.. sorry 'bout that
They may cause major problems for themself at release. I would expect minor bug tweaks, not adding things and changing how things work.
Please remember, any of the builds after the RC are pre-releases and may not function properly due to the changes that have yet to be fully completed. I would stick with the RC and remember the release to the general public for retail is only a few months away.
