Apple's much anticipated release of 2009 for the iPhone and iPod Touch is here. Apple has released the latest major firmware for the iPhone and iPod Touch available for download through iTunes.

After months of teasing us with new features, performance improvements and overall control of the latest firmware, weekly beta's the new firmware has officially arrived. The latest 3.0 firmware adds hundreds of new features including a landscape keyboard, MMS, Internet Tethering, full Bluetooth support, Cut, Copy & Paste turn-by-turn GPS navigation, a kill switch for lost handsets and many more.

The firmware will also take full advantage of the latest hardware in the iPhone 3GS, which releases on June 19. Some features will be disabled on 1st gen models of the iPhone, such as MMS and video recording capability. Consumers may need to wait to upgrade or purchase a brand new iPhone 3GS on Friday June 19 instead of using their 3G iPhone. AT&T customers will need to pay more than previously expected to upgrade their phones.

The download is available for free to iPhone 1st gen and 3G consumers. The 3.0 firmware for the iPod Touch will be available too for $9.95 who wish to upgrade.

Could someone tell what build is the software update 3.0 for the ipod touch 1g? I have build 3.0 (7A341)
#5.1 +Chicane-UK on 17 Jun 2009 - 17:38
7A341 is the release version I believe, so it's the same as the GM that was floating around last week.
#5.2 Alex M on 17 Jun 2009 - 17:42
Anyone else confirm that the release is the same as the GM? iPod2,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw

Ok thanks, I already downloaded from last week, glad is the same build.
#6 m.keeley on 17 Jun 2009 - 17:31
Not really anything new that I'd use enough to warrant paying yet another upgrade fee for my Touch. The only one is possibly cut and paste but I've had that for some time as I've jail broken.
#7 Meconio on 17 Jun 2009 - 17:35
i hope it fixes my genius playlist creator
#8 +Chicane-UK on 17 Jun 2009 - 17:38
Tis a good version this, or at least it seems to be so far Some nice new (admittedly overdue) features and some good bugs squashed. Thanks Apple!

I seen to have lost the itunes/app store anyone else have this problem or know how to repair?
#10 Social on 17 Jun 2009 - 17:54

#11 - Kaboose - on 17 Jun 2009 - 18:05
yay, just showed up in iTunes
#12 Sawyer12 on 17 Jun 2009 - 18:12
Yeah happy with it so far!
#13 Omen1393 on 17 Jun 2009 - 18:17
Not bad, it seemed a little bit faster, copy and paste is nice to have finally and search is pretty useful, other than that I haven't found much of a difference.

Downloading now, any news on jailbreak?

Check out the iPhone Dev Team's blog.

Is the jailbreak likely to be released today also?
#15.1 barteh on 17 Jun 2009 - 18:22
according to the blog, theres nothing as of yet?
Meanwhile, we’re in the middle of testing our PwnageTool and QuickPwn tools, which will work with iTunes 8.2. The jailbreak of course continues to work on 3.0 for all devices it ever worked on, thanks due the Pwnage 2.0 technique released last summer. Our tools will be released no sooner than the Apple release (just in case!).

I'm wondering if anyone experiences the same problem..

This happens to me when I'm syncing, but it's also happening on the firmware upgrade. The upgrade downloaded fine via iTunes, and then you know the whole installation/sync process begins. Well whenever I sync it always seems like it hangs on the "Backing Up (name here)'s iPod" section. When I'm syncing I usually skip this section, but thats not an option with the firmware upgrade. :|

Anyone else have the same problem?

EDIT: Well damn, after an hour and 15 minutes, it finished backing up all the data. :|

Seems that it does a full backup of your entire phone and applications the first chance it gets after applying the update. Subsequent syncs are back to normal speed for me.
#18.2 Meconio on 18 Jun 2009 - 05:05
Trust me man you wanna have a back up, it even restores all the data in any app and the position on the multiple screens

After the Extraction, is anyone getting error messages saying the iPhone Activation Server is currently offline?

I am. Gonna keep trying - the server is probably slammed with people trying to register.

Hilarious if you look at the iPhone Apple Discussion Forum, hundreds of threads about the problem already! Apple apparently "promised" this downtime wouldn't happen again.

You get it from the iTunes Store after you have purchased it.

You can get it http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/ when the site comes back up

but you will not be able to install it without paying for it

Scattered reports of iPhone 3.0 issues
(CNET Article)

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-10266635...ag=2547-1_3-0-5

From reading it, it appears that people are just having problems getting the updates. The title of the article to me is mileading readers into thinking that there is an issue with the OS update itself.
#27 djdanster on 17 Jun 2009 - 20:01
is anybody else unable to connect to the app/itunes store on the ipod touch 2g? It says it can't connect to the app store/itunes store and then by wifi goes but comes back a few minutes later going in the same loop when I try to connect.

Is it just some strange caching issue on my end or does the new firmware break the mobile version of neowin?
#29.1 +Phantom Helix™ on 17 Jun 2009 - 21:26
Neowin is experiencing database problems, porribly server?

Phantom Helix said,

I was thinking perhaps how they detect it's an iphone and serve the appropriate page? If the Browser string is changed becuase of a new version or something it might perhaps screw that up and then neowin serves a generic mobile page rather than an iphone specific one.
#29.3 Electric Bolt on 17 Jun 2009 - 23:32
It does break it, this has been like this since the betas. You know... It's June and I heard that new Neowin Mobile was coming out in June, maybe they should ditch the old mobile version and put up the new mobile version along with an update to be compatible with iPhone OS 3.0.
(1 reply) #30 +Phantom Helix™ on 17 Jun 2009 - 23:02
Find my iPhone is a joke, not only do you have to enable location services, you have go into your mobile me account on the iPhone and turn on "Find My iPhone", but you also have to enable PUSH notification for mobileME on the iPhone.

Couldn't they have made it easier ???????

it is fun tho letting your friends borrow your phone to make a call and then sending the phone a msg like, "HEY Jerk, I SAID TWO MINUTES" lol

And damn my battery is draining like crazy, i know i testing the heck outa the new features, but ive never had my battery drain this fast

This just sux. Have been trying to access 3.0 upgrade for my 2nd Gen iTouch for like an hour. Keep getting an "iTunes Store is temporarily not available" message. Come on. Like Apple didn't think that people would be flooding their servers on the first day of the release. I mean, they do offer ownload services as a corner stone of their business model, so why is this different. Just completely disappointing.
#31.2 bradsday on 17 Jun 2009 - 23:25
Okay, not that tech savy. Have downloaded it, now what?
#31.3 Electric Bolt on 17 Jun 2009 - 23:38
Sync with iTunes, then if on a Mac, hold option and click update, find your IPSW and then choose to upgrade. On a PC, same thing except hold shift instead of option.

I'll probally bite the bullet and just pay the $9.95 to upgrade my Touch 1G, although I can't see it improving much as most of the new features will be disabled on it. Still the search and finally been able to cut and paste will definitetly be welcome additions
#33.1 +Phantom Helix™ on 17 Jun 2009 - 23:58
Yes but there will be apps and stuff that will be 3.0+ only

Just downloaded and installed it on my Touch 1G. I have to say, even on my old Touch it makes quite an improvement! it seems quite snappy now and the new features that I did get, are quite nice. I had my reservations about paying for this update but they are gone now, well worth it. Apple have done well

precisely what i was going to ask. where in the phone can I find it ?
#36.2 simon360 on 18 Jun 2009 - 05:16
It'll be in settings -> General -> Network, but your carrier does need to support it, you need to have the correct plan, etc.

If it is included in your plan and you don't have it, call your carrier. It's always possible your friends have it enabled due to a glitch of some sort on the network. However, in Canada with Rogers, the deal is if you have a plan with > 1GB data/month, you get free tethering; if you have less, tethering is disabled.

#40.1 +Xerxes on 18 Jun 2009 - 11:41
Yep, as per the previous big update there is a charge attached. However, let me assure you it is well worth it it made quite a difference on my Touch 1G! also remember, iPhone users aren't really getting it for free either, Apple gets their money from them via the royalties or such they get from the phone carriers I believe (can someone confirm that?).

Okay, so the download and installation process was painful, however was finally able to upgrade my 2nd Gen iTouch to 3.0. My initial impression is that browsing and email via WiFi feels a bit slower. The pages and mail downloads seem to take longer. Everyone had said that this upgrade would make the iPod feel "snappier," but so far I am not seeing it.

Now my "Remote" application is no longer working. Uninstalled and reinstalled twice, but cannot get it to find my music library. Also, for whatever reason, the upgrade installed a "Voice Memos" application (which cannot be removed). This sort of makes no sense, since there is not a microphone on the iTouch to record your voice memos.

Anyway, the only thing that I have really liked so far is being able to type in landscape. This does more than double your keyboard area, and makes typing much faster and more accurate. Not sure if this was worth the $10 upgrade charge, but guess its a little late to be considering that now.
#41.1 +StevoFC on 18 Jun 2009 - 12:10
The 2nd gen touch supports the use of a mic.

StevoFC said,

But I don't have one, nor do I intend on buying one. For all the similar applications available, cannot for the life of me see why they would force this on their customers. For that matter, wished I could optionally remove a number of the other applications that I don't use, such as the Calculator and Notes.

10 bucks to download this upgrade for your ipod touch. Rather expensive for an upgrade that should be free, since it adds nothing but useless features. Ooo...cut-n-paste gotta get that, pfft.
