Apple's much anticipated release of 2009 for the iPhone and iPod Touch is here. Apple has released the latest major firmware for the iPhone and iPod Touch available for download through iTunes. After months of teasing us with new features, performance improvements and overall control of the latest firmware, weekly beta's the new firmware has officially arrived. The latest 3.0 firmware adds hundreds of new features including a landscape keyboard, MMS, Internet Tethering, full Bluetooth support, Cut, Copy & Paste turn-by-turn GPS navigation, a kill switch for lost handsets and many more.
The firmware will also take full advantage of the latest hardware in the iPhone 3GS, which releases on June 19. Some features will be disabled on 1st gen models of the iPhone, such as MMS and video recording capability. Consumers may need to wait to upgrade or purchase a brand new iPhone 3GS on Friday June 19 instead of using their 3G iPhone. AT&T customers will need to pay more than previously expected to upgrade their phones.
The download is available for free to iPhone 1st gen and 3G consumers. The 3.0 firmware for the iPod Touch will be available too for $9.95 who wish to upgrade.

Can someone please post the direct URL for iPhone 3G?

This happens to me when I'm syncing, but it's also happening on the firmware upgrade. The upgrade downloaded fine via iTunes, and then you know the whole installation/sync process begins. Well whenever I sync it always seems like it hangs on the "Backing Up (name here)'s iPod" section. When I'm syncing I usually skip this section, but thats not an option with the firmware upgrade. :|
Anyone else have the same problem?
EDIT: Well damn, after an hour and 15 minutes, it finished backing up all the data. :|

Haha yeah, will keep hitting the button Update button until it actually does something!!
Me too...gonna keep slamming that server until it upgrades. I'm sure no-one else is doing the same lol
Hilarious if you look at the iPhone Apple Discussion Forum, hundreds of threads about the problem already! Apple apparently "promised" this downtime wouldn't happen again.

Yeah, this happened with 2.0 too... couldn't activate my phone for 5 hours... had a lot of voicemail after I finally got it activated.
Yeah, cause that will really help the overloaded server process people faster.
but you will not be able to install it without paying for it

From reading it, it appears that people are just having problems getting the updates. The title of the article to me is mileading readers into thinking that there is an issue with the OS update itself.
Did you mean handset instead of headset?
I was thinking perhaps how they detect it's an iphone and serve the appropriate page? If the Browser string is changed becuase of a new version or something it might perhaps screw that up and then neowin serves a generic mobile page rather than an iphone specific one.
Couldn't they have made it easier ???????
it is fun tho letting your friends borrow your phone to make a call and then sending the phone a msg like, "HEY Jerk, I SAID TWO MINUTES" lol
And damn my battery is draining like crazy, i know i testing the heck outa the new features, but ive never had my battery drain this fast

yeh, welcome to apple's version of history. Forget everyone else who came before, claim basic features as their own. isheep rejoice!
god i hate apple
If it is included in your plan and you don't have it, call your carrier. It's always possible your friends have it enabled due to a glitch of some sort on the network. However, in Canada with Rogers, the deal is if you have a plan with > 1GB data/month, you get free tethering; if you have less, tethering is disabled.
Finally I can easily use my iPhone as Modem.

How hard was for U learn pdanet ??
LOL
o_+
Not everyone wants a jailbreaked iPhone, ya know?
ive got some mobile me control pannel in Cp is this the same thing?
Do i have to pay for anythin ?. can someone explain it all to me. thanks
No, updates are free. This is a new OS Version.
Now my "Remote" application is no longer working. Uninstalled and reinstalled twice, but cannot get it to find my music library. Also, for whatever reason, the upgrade installed a "Voice Memos" application (which cannot be removed). This sort of makes no sense, since there is not a microphone on the iTouch to record your voice memos.
Anyway, the only thing that I have really liked so far is being able to type in landscape. This does more than double your keyboard area, and makes typing much faster and more accurate. Not sure if this was worth the $10 upgrade charge, but guess its a little late to be considering that now.
But I don't have one, nor do I intend on buying one. For all the similar applications available, cannot for the life of me see why they would force this on their customers. For that matter, wished I could optionally remove a number of the other applications that I don't use, such as the Calculator and Notes.
No thanks.
3GS only as far as I know
Still no delivery reports for text messages!? ROTFLOL!!!!!!!! My €9 low end nokie does that, and so does every phone I've had for the last 10 years (and most were low end phones). C'mon, a €500 phone that only now has native MMS support, still doesn't support sms delivery reports!?
