Microsoft confirmed today that they plan to release a public beta of Microsoft Security Essentials (formerly codenamed Morro) on June 23.

The free anti-virus product will begin with a beta program next week and an updated beta version over the summer period. Company officials also confirmed that Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) will be launching in fall this year. We have learned that Microsoft is targeting September or at the latest to have the anti-virus software available for the October 22 Windows 7 launch.

Formerly known as Morro, the software giant plans to replace its Windows Live OneCare offerings with MSE later in the year. Microsoft will discontinue retail sales of OneCare on June 30 so you won't be able to purchase it in store after that date, but consumers will still be able to purchase the product after 30 June directly from Microsoft.

The beta will be available next Tuesday in limited form, Microsoft is targeting it at the first 75,000 US, Israel and Brazil based customers. A Chinese beta will be available in mid July. Similar to the Windows 7 beta it is likely the company will expand the offering to meet demand.

With BitTorrent, everything is an open beta.

Basically it's just a rebrand of the product they already had, and that wasn't so superior...

The detection rate and your personal preference will tell...
#1.5 GP007 on 18 Jun 2009 - 23:36
It's not One Care if that's what you mean. Lots of people are pointing out that it's probably a stripped version of Forefront.

Regardless, lots of people who used OneCare liked it and had no problems. And from what I remember it was superior to norton and mcafee for sure.

What AV ISN'T better than either of those?

I'll stick with my free Avira, thanks.

Edit:
I'm sure I'll try it out and install it on other peoples computers though.

Cos it's a beta, obviously.
#3 Riggers on 18 Jun 2009 - 20:27
Would think most likely as they want it testing on as many systems as possible, plus it`s free anyway so there`s no worries there...

If more than 75,000 people want to download i can`t see them saying no(more feedback/possible sample submissions)
#4 artfuldodga on 18 Jun 2009 - 20:35
well i'm always going back and forth between scanners, may as well test Essentials on Windows 7 and see how it fares

I wonder how many false reports of viruses it will find, for example radmin is always on the list if the icon is set not to show in the taskbar... atleast it was so with windows defender
#6.1 artfuldodga on 18 Jun 2009 - 21:49
OneCare had the least amount of false positives out of all AV's in May
#6.2 excalpius on 19 Jun 2009 - 20:34
Actually, having NO AV beats all "false positive" detection rates...ahem. 8P

Hopefully, this sucker gets integrated with Windows 7. On the other hand, if this comes with Windows 7, it's kindda too late, especially when it's only beta now.
#7.1 andrewbares on 18 Jun 2009 - 20:53
If they bundle it with Win7, the EU will most likely complain.

There is already Windows 7 E -- if the EU did complain they would just leave it out of that.
#8 WooHoo!!! on 18 Jun 2009 - 20:48
Doesn't need to be integrated, easy download from Microsoft and saves them annoying other anti virus companies and likely getting sued.

Well, yeah. But if the EU made a fuss about this at all, I think it would be best if Microsoft just said "we will not offer Security Essentials to the EU". Since the product is free, EU residents can still obtain it and not feel bad about "piracy".

The alternative is the EU starts becoming reasonable. Which seems more likely?

The EU will still demand that Microsoft ship Windows with their competitors' anti virus products like they did for the web browser.

I still think it's fishy Microsoft entering the AV market...
Why can't MS fix/change Windows in that manner that they (and others?) don't need no AV software?
#12.1 +veritas310 on 18 Jun 2009 - 21:13
Why some people still don't understand this is beyond me. It's not the operating system that's the problem, it's the user clicking the suspicious links, etc. Stop blaming Microsoft for providing a faulty OS, when in fact it's the user. Everyone assumes that OS X is such a fantastic OS because there aren't many viruses popping up, take a look at the market share and put yourself in the shoes of a programmer, would you rather develop something that would infect up to 90% of PC's or 10%? It's really simple if you think about it, don't be naive. No antivirus is really necessary on an intelligent user's PC, plain and simple.
#12.2 reactionary007 on 18 Jun 2009 - 21:40
you mean not allow users to install anything, download anything, open any emails, browse any websites?

QFT, man. I've been running windows without AV since 98SE and guess what? no viruses. And it's real simple- you're parents ever tell you "don't talk to strangers"? or that gambling, stealing, and pr0n will only get you into trouble? same rules apply on the internet.
#12.5 kiddingguy on 19 Jun 2009 - 10:55
Of course it's the users own interaction and responsibility as well.

However, to provide AV software your own which prevents malicious software for your own OS doesn't make really sense to me... why not "integrate" it or improve your own OS beforehand so that you don't have to write and code the software yourselves in an additional package?

They can't streamline it with the OS or else they'd be in some legal trouble, that's why. How doesn't it make sense to you, it's really fundamental...

How well it detects may be the definitive question, but having the Security Essentials running doesn't seem to have much of a visible impact on performance, I'm quite impressed and look forward to playing with later builds.

Presently using:

Microsoft Security Essentials Version: 1.0.2140.0
Antimalware Client Version: 2.0.5612.0
Engine Version: 1.1.4701.0
Antivirus definitions: 1.59.1480.0
Antispyware definitions: 1.59.1480.0

That tells you nothing - first off you need to know if it's multithreading (or it'll simply sit on one core regardless) and second you can't see any load on the cpu in that pic - cpu load in 7% and we don't know what caused the spike on core 4.

Some Facts About MSE Leaked Version :
Its available on M******a
Its for Xp & Vista but runs absolutely fine on 7.
There is no jumplist support in MSE for 7
The installer has a live icon 256x256 but the MSE application itself hasn't (I hate that)
The icon looks fine but it looks quite ugly in the notification area.
It installs instantly.
Takes some time to update definitons
Then u are ready to go.
There is option for (SCAN WHEN IDLE) which i think, is a common feature on Most of the AVs out dere.
Custom scan is available.U can also click on files, folder etc to scan em... (Nothing special i know)
When u open the MSE,it opens instantly... just like NAV09.(Keep in Mind that NAV has the least footprint in AVs)
The user inteface Utility Consumes approx. 5.5 to 6. MB (It varies)
The Antimalware Service takes about 30000 to 36000 K (When Idle.ie no virus scanning etc)
Uses Only Two processes named as 'msseces.exe' & 'MsMpEng.exe'
Scan speed is fine... U wont say "OMG ITS AWESOME"...but it isnt bad either
Definiton updates are done on daily basis....... ( This won't compete with Norton Pulse updates or sth)
It Monitors file activity on ur computer and scans attachments and Downloaded files
No Support for Messenger Scan or sumthing
No Support for MSoffice scan
There is a similar feature in MSE known as Exclude process.Remember Norton insight ? its similar to that.but in MSE we have to manually exclude processes.
It can scan files within zip and cab files... ( .ZIP is not special but .CAB content scanning is sumthin cool )
Creates a restore point when deleting infected files. Cool eh

Conclusion:
Its really Simple & easy to use
I personally think that it is a nice basic Security Solution.
People who need a Simple light AV and who dont like Third party stuff can use it.... its nice.
I like its simplicity !
Anyway its still not even a beta... so we have to see alot more...

Lots of security by Microsoft!! They better remove Defender from Win7 and instead add Morro (I like Morro's name) they can even put win7 regular firewall in Microsoft Security Essentials(Morro) as an additional tab, Win7 with build in Microsoft Security Essentials(Morro+Firewall), sounds cool to me...
