On the Bears & Balls segment of his show The Colbert Report last night, comedian Stephen Colbert took aim at Microsoft and Project Natal, he also gave us a look into the next generation Xbox, what he calls the "ex-Xbox". The segment begins by talking about the recent smoking laws in the United States, but starting at about 1:40 he begins to highlight Microsoft, and ends around 4:20.

The Windows error sound when he smacks the button had me rolling out of bed last night. Thought some light hearted news would start the weekend off right for everyone

He's a mac lover, could he be more obvious?

i dont think i'll ever hear my default xp bootup sound the same way anymore... need to upgrade to a more recent OS soon

Yeah, it was a surprisingly cheap shot from the usually accurate and up to date Colbert, but it was funny in context.

I remember initially being surprised by his strong pro-Apple/anti-MS bias. I'm not sure which it actually is. He'll take potshots at XBox even though Apple has no entry in the console gaming market, so it could be aimed at MS (or he just simply doesn't like the Xbo, but he's also taken several jabs at Zune, and will mention his iPhone at least once a week--whipping it out at least once a month (which is really just once every two weeks, if you think about how much time off him and Stewart take).

He'll no doubt have a segment on Windows 7 eventually, if even just in passing. His slant, whenever that rolls around, will clarify things, perhaps.

Still love his show. Just get nervous every now and then that one of the prepared graphics will be an 'M$'. My opinion of him would plummet, crash into a mountain, collapse a tunnel, and suffocate a dozen miners.

@Joshie

Extremely well put.

Why surprised? He is clearly an intelligent, and knowledgeable person.

Yes, much better to bury your head in the sand. Maybe you will be happier with fox "news" channel.

Colbert Report like many other shows earns money through product placement. His show is watched by a huge number of people that can be said to be in the "young" age group, most of whom are able to buy gaming consoles. All he has to do is somehow introduce the product to his viewers.

Whether he mocks Microsoft, in the process, or not, is irrelevant. Whether he is pro-Apple or not is also irrelevant.

In fact, because he allegedly mocked Microsoft, Neowin as well as other news channels/websites picked it up and spread the word about Natal even more!

Saw this yesterday. Thought it was pretty funny.

Natal was actually demo'd on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon too and looked fantastic. Say what you want about it, it's getting quite a bit of attention.

I was just about to say...

We have a comedy central canada, no reason why we shouldn't be allowed to watch these videos.

Someone should tell these sites it's the INTERnet not the local-only net. Are they trying to bring us back into the stone age of the local-only BBS?

and i really liked that 'ex-xbox' part... its like the entire console is inside natal, how he pretends to put it away and everything

that is a really good point, tho

what kind of abstract, out of this world type of game would it take to lift natal above these stereotypes?

"In Canada, Comedy Central videos are available on The Comedy Network."

Anyone got a link to this video on Comedy Network?

I really hate how every American comerical site pulls that bull****. Why the hell don't they all just use YouTube like normal people.

(sigh)
And I can't get BBC programmes here in the US through the BBS site, either.

Yeah... It's an "American" thing.
#5.4 simon360 on 19 Jun 2009 - 16:43
I don't think it was meant to offend...

All the American channels do do it, and it is annoying. However, we also block Americans from watching Comedy Network programming online, and possibly CBC as well.

It is annoying, and from our perspective it's only the American channels that really effect us, although I do like some of the BBC stuff.

i can get the colbertreport.com website from my country, and i watch entire episodes from there...

No different to Windows fanboys, except at least Apple fanboys have a little reason on their side. Windows fanboys... psshh, might as well be General Eletric fanboys, or Shell fanboys...

Licensing issues.

Piracy party FTW.

We need serious redefinition of intellectual property laws.

(disclosure, I work for a company that takes in $500million Euros per year in licensing and patent fees).

Maybe people should change their licensing so that other countries will have more reason to give them money. Right now it seems like it is costing them exposure. And Canada should learn from the mistakes of fascists and stop trying to control culture. It's a joke.

In Canada, they have a new show based on Bob & Doug, which were stereotype characters first used to make fun of the fact that "Canadian Content" was being required (their take: 'wtf is "Canadian content", a couple of guys drinking beer and saying "eh" ?').

Now it's pretty much embracing that stereotype and running with it, so it doesn't have the effect of criticizing the fact that Canada is trying to control its culture. Instead, this new show is no longer satirizing that fact, but instead embracing it as if it was part of Canada's culture all along.

Instead of importing A-grade shows where they can (i.e. we are now witnessing the beginning of the end of Comedy Central shows in Canada), they're forcing people to watch really corny stereotype-ey garbage with z-list actors...

Canada's getting pretty pathetic...

I now wish I hadn't watched that video. That had to be the most stupid thing I ever saw.
#8.1 andrewbares on 19 Jun 2009 - 17:45
umm, no sense of humor?? The Windows error sound made me lol, and i'm a microsoft fanboy!

But I also believe this whole Natal project is an epic failure, you can't play real games without a controller, and I think many people realize this. Natal is only for wasting time with some simple games (i.e. acting like you're a dinosaur, lol) But if they do pull it off, then I'll give props to Microsoft, and I just might have to buy an Xbox (as long as it doesn't red ring anymore).

If only there was a way to skip over a story without commenting. I hate this new forced commenting laws that obama bought in. I used to just ignore stories I wasn't interested in.
