When Jobs announced that he was leaving Apple for a few months on medical leave there was a lot of speculation that his cancer may have returned. He left in January with an undisclosed medical condition and with it being only days away from his presumable return to the top of Apple reports are surfacing that he had a liver transplant.According to the Wall Street Journal Jobs had a liver transplant in Tennessee approximately two months ago for reasons that are unknown but it is reported that he is in good health and is on track to return to Apple at the end of June. When Jobs does return he may only work initially part time because of the major surgery.
"William Hawkins, a doctor specializing in pancreatic and gastrointestinal surgery at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., said that the type of slow-growing pancreatic tumor Mr. Jobs had will commonly metastasize in another organ during a patient's lifetime, and that the organ is usually the liver. ‘All total, 75% of patients are going to have the disease spread over the course of their life,' said Dr. Hawkins, who has not treated Mr. Jobs."
Apple has fared well without Jobs at the helm with a successful launch of the iPhone 3G S occurring during his absence the company can survive without Jobs making every decision. But, Jobs is a rare breed who is credited with saving Apple and is an excellent businessman who could sell ketchup to a mustard company. We wish Steve the best and hope that he returns soon as we all benefit, Mac and Windows users, from his ideas.
Update:
Methodist University Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee has stated that they did perform a liver transplant surgery and that his prognosis is excellent. They have also denied that his status level pushed him to the top of the transplant list.
"In a statement posted on its Web site, the hospital said Mr. Jobs had received the organ because he had the most urgent need for a new liver when one became available."
The statement posting on its website, which Jobs gave permission, was a stark contrast to the usual "no comment" mentality. We wish Jobs a speedy recovery and can't wait to see what his presence on stage at the next Apple keynote will bring.

He wants to eat your face.
Is this health portal now?

Ok. I'll still put a one for you : +1
And for me : +1
And your proof that the two are related is....what?
You mean you didn't know that smoking weed causes pancreatic cancer?! ;-)
+1
It's disturbing to see people are still bashing him here. How tasteless.
And for me : +1
lol
+1 from me to
But you are right, I don't like the guy or how his company has to bash Microsoft to look superior
They've always mocked MS. Regardless I wish Mr Jobs a speedy recovery on the way to good health!
He's William Shatner in disguise. :p
In a letter to the "Apple community," Jobs said the cause appears to be "a hormone imbalance that has been 'robbing' me of the proteins my body needs to be healthy. Sophisticated blood tests have confirmed this diagnosis."
[...]
Investors were relieved to hear that Jobs' condition is improving. Shares of Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple (AAPL, Fortune 500) rose about 4% in Monday trading, even as the Nasdaq declined.
"It should alleviate an overhang on the stock," said Shannon Cross, technology analyst for Cross Research. "It should provide [investors] with more confidence that Steve Jobs is going to be around for a while."
I hope Mr. Jobs gets better, and I also hope he can answer for the discrepancy between a hormonal imbalance and a cancer requiring a liver transplant to his shareholders, as I imagine they are wondering if they were lied to.
I agree with you on iPod and iPhone that it changed the industry, but Mac (or a PC with OSX installed) did nothing earth shattering.
Placing themselves in the classrooms of so many children in the US as their first interaction with a computer of any kind, 25+ years ago wasn't earth shattering? If not for Apple there wouldn't have been computers in the classrooms for many for decades to come. I'm not a "fanboy" of any platform, but I find flaw in your assessment.
the guy asked a legit question. you answered explaining the impact of such news on the stock market and shareholders.good that's it. why do you need to warn him ? Just because you feel like "this is our place, and I'll go on a freaking mad warning spree" ? good! go ahead!
You can't make assumptions like that. You just can't.
I didn't say I was going to warn him. I said:
And that is a valid statement. Every time people post comments like that in our news articles it completely derails the topic of discussion and provides nothing of value to the conversation at hand. It's a warnable offense in the forums, so why shouldn't it be here? Nowhere did I say "you're getting a warning." I merely asked if that's what we're going to have to start doing to get people to realize that those comments aren't welcome on the front page anymore than derailing a thread would be in the forums.
I am not denying the impact of 'Mac' in computer industry. After all Windows started by licensing certain espacts of the GUI from Apple. But that was in 80s and very early 90s. When Steve came back to Apple as the CEO nothing was done earth shattering about 'Mac' appart from switching to a PC model, which they had been bashing for decades.
As for placing computers in classrooms. I don't think it was really for charity purposes but it was a business investment. All those children would use Apple when they grew up - which by surprise was not the case. By 1996 Apple was at a state of near bankruptcy, and they were saved by the industry, ironicaly, also by the help of Microsoft.
Where Steve was successful as the CEO and where they really made their money was with iPods and iPhones. Worldwide, OSX still has a marketshare of around 3%.

That's not an assumption, it's a fact. Apple computers were the first experience many students had for decades. Apple positioned themselves with the school systems by providing economical advantages for the schools to use their systems, and for many years students got their first introductions to computing on an Apple product.
Believe it or not, Microsoft would be dying to do that too, they are just not allowed. Why do you try to show that this is some sort of 'charity'; of course it is not.
I said nothing of the sort of it being a charity. It was a marketing strategy if anything. Get the Apple products in their hands at an early age, let them learn on them, and then hope they'll continue to buy and use Apple products as they age. It had nothing to do with Microsoft, and besides, we're talking 25+ years ago, as most school systems have long since switched to PC platforms for their classroom systems.
*sigh* Let's go back to your original comment that I replied to.
Positioning themselves as the first computing experience for generations of school children wasn't "earth shattering" as you put it? That was an extremely game changing event for the world of computing and clearly impacted where we all are now, no matter which platform you prefer. Yes, it was decades ago, but it's still the same company, and Steve jobs is the head of that company.

Well... Okay happy to hear the "generations" in the United States had this experience and it was a game changer for the company, so much that it ended up with a collapse.
And I am sorry to be the one to break the news but there is a world beyond the United States, and for something to be earth shattering for the computer industry, I'd expect it to have some impact everywhere.

Let it go Shane. It's an Apple related newspiece; people are going to derail it to the grave. Just look at the other ones posted.
Though, I do agree with you.
And please, don't make this into another flame war, and just recognize the contribution and the health problems of Steve Jobs and end it there.

You fail to see how a global organization can be affected by a change in any country that it operates in, and how that change therefore affects the world that it operates in? Really?
This was an early warning... Most people do not have this warning and it's full blown spread through the Pancreas before they find out. He was offered the chance to have something called a Pancreaticoduodenectomy (for short, Whipple) procedure performed and he took it.
Now, 2 1/2 months after surgery .. He is recovering very slowly. He lost nearly 50+lbs of weight and is trying so hard to gain it back but it's tough. The doctors have put him in a state of depression with "factual data" on Pancreatic Cancer patients lifespan (normally: 1 year .. 2-3 if lucky). They also said, most patients have the cancer come back after being dormant in lymph nodes within the first year or two in the same area (liver, pancreas, etc). This type of cancer is very tough and little research is put into it considering it's uncommon.
My prayers are with Mr. Jobs.. I've seen first hand what this can do to someone and I wish him the best throughout his recovery.
People Magazine != Neowin
Sick I call it
Holy **** that made me laugh lol
Let's either leave the guy alone to recover in peace or start posting medical reports on other players in the tech field. No need to play favorites.

My thoughts exactly. Seriously, stick to tech news.
Im sure it could have been reported way before, on the exact date or way after the release of the iPhone 3G S.
He is still better looking than Steve BALDmer
Great argument!
- Have you been in the Moon already?
- You are ugly
Nonetheless I hope he recovers
Frankly, I have better things to waste my emotions on than him. There's 7 billion of humans and we'd all be fit for mental institutions if we cared for every death.
There are billions of people, do you feel the same for all of them? If no, you are terrible because you make one special and others not.
I b/c don't care too.
Guess what? he doesn't give a **** about you! save your time and stop pretending to give a **** about somone you don't even know! just buy his **** and stfu!!
+666

Why are you reading this and posting here then if you have more important things to worry about?
Posting a comment == he cares whether Jobs will live??
Don't think so.
I wonder if it was a full version or an upgrade!
get well soon steve!
edit: last night i saw an advert on UK tv for the new iphone. I simply cannot believe that the selling point was "video capability" when the existing hardware is capable of that already (when jailbroken) plus the fact that basically every phone on the market today can record video. Given the cost of the iphone on a contract in the UK, they are simply taking the **** by not allowing existing iphones to record video and pushing the isheep into a costly unjustified upgrade. If any other company did this, there would be outrage, people would be leaving apple for other platforms by the thousand. Jobs has targetted the "non-technical" user with his ease of use interface, now he's raping their wallets for cash as they know no better. unbelievable. Even more unbelievable is the fact that so called tech-savvy people stand for this blatant exploitation. He must be laughing his head off.
wake up people, this guy is having a laugh at your expense. Hitler created the beetle as the people's car.....

I agree but what do you expect from delusional apple fanboys?
