Microsoft offering $100 Technet discount till July 3

Advertisement (Why?)
We've just received word that Microsoft has begun offering a discount on its Technet subscription. With Windows 7 coming out in October, this is a great time to sign up. Under this discount program, you can get a one year subscription for $249, a $100 discount below the normal price. While more expensive than most upgrade versions of Windows 7, it does offer users the full-versions of any SKU as well as many other Microsoft programs. Also, it is expected that these users will get Windows 7 before the general public in October.

Interested users can visit the following link and enter the promo code "TEYFY09" to get the discount. The offer is set to expire on July 3.

Update: We've just been notified that UK users can enter the promo code "TNCARE09" to get the same discount (£187.37 instead of £234.21) -- We'd also like to point out that Technet subscriptions are for testing purposes only and not designed for general retail or commercial use. Please be sure to read all Microsoft provided licencing documentation to be sure the use of this subscription is done in a legal and ethical way.

+1. Just did. For me, this beats the $100 Win 7 Pro upgrade being offered now b/c I will get RTM whenever released to technet (hopefully sometime in July) plus I get Office 2010 and Server 08 R2, plus anything else, all for $250.

Yes, but for 99% of users you're still pirating software with a Technet subscription. The licensing terms are limited and it is intended to be used for IT support. The $100 upgrade has the benefit of being fully legal. Using Office, Windows, etc, for personal use is violating technet's agreements, so technically you're just paying $250 to pirate software rather than using torrents. If I'm not mistaken, the Action Pack has much more favorable terms for the license.

A great deal but I have MSDNAA (Im guessing Windows 7 Professional based off from Vista Business) and im betting on another ultimate steal dead with Office 2010, if not then I can live with Office 2007.

The only thing that sucks is I wont have Media Center.
#6.1 jwil1 on 26 Jun 2009 - 10:40
Windows 7 Professional includes Media Centre (but Vista Business didn't)

...and of course, I just activated my new MSDN Pro/Premium sub. This morning.

But since I got it off eBay for $425US ($2,499 retail), I can't complain too much (also includes Visual Studio Pro, production licenses for MS Office, Expression Blend & Expression Web)

#7.1 excalpius on 26 Jun 2009 - 05:21
How in the world can you get a valid MSDN sub from e-Bay?!! Isn't this only legal from MS direct?
#7.2 Raa on 26 Jun 2009 - 05:51
It's not legal.

you got p0wned...lol subs are only legal via MS... I would be cancelling that if I were you

It's worth to mention Technet downloads are for testing purposes only and in no way for commercial use.
#8.1 excalpius on 26 Jun 2009 - 05:20
So, don't resell those machines, etc. etc. But no one cares if you use these licenses at home.

It's the best family value you will ever find from MS.
#8.2 andrewbares on 26 Jun 2009 - 06:23
Yea, I think Microsoft could sue Neowin maybe. Neowin told us that "it does offer users the full-versions of any SKU as well as many other Microsoft programs."

Basically, they're saying you can get full versions of any Microsoft product and use them all you want? Nope, that's actually illegial. It's for TESTING ONLY.

But, hey, I see a good deal, I'll take it, lol. Thanks Neowin, I've gotta tell my parents to buy this!

Why is that misleading? They are the full versions. The license just limits what you can do with them.

So if I subscribe to technet and install windows 7 ultimate on all my machines does anything happen after the subscription expires?

Nope.

I HIGHLY recommend everyone in Neowin's target demographic seriously looks into this.

Thanks neowin!

lol. Maybe he just tests things out very thoroughly, like until the next OS comes out.

All evaluation of course - I just like to test on different computer specs, right? Seems code is for US and Canada only.
#12 +shinji257 on 26 Jun 2009 - 05:42
Yea. I'm on my second year. Granted I only really do use these for testing use and such but I have a friend that is splitting the cost and uses them on a personal basis. If you should need to activate over the phone and speak to a rep just make sure to tell them that they are retail keys. I think their systems see that they are multi-use keys though since the guy asked me if it was my 4th time activating and was totally cool with it.

P.S. - I got 2 others to join in the past using those coupons. They are happy they got it. It has come in plenty useful with all that stuff. oh and they have the home/mce versions of Vista and XP available as well so I don't see why they wouldn't have the Home/MCE version of Win7 available upon it's RTM release.
(1 reply) #13 TC17 on 26 Jun 2009 - 05:53
So you can install the software on however many computers you own in your house? Does it not require a key?
#13.1 andrewbares on 26 Jun 2009 - 06:26
You can generate as many keys as you want. During the "Free TechNet" spree, one guy generated 300 keys for Vista. So, yes, as many computers as you need!

It's an unlimited all you can eat! But remember, "Testing purposes only". That's the rules, so just "test" it thoroughly, like until the next OS comes out!

what is this a joke?
MCE included in home premium professional and ultimate for windows 7.

Seriously, These US only Win7 promotions are insulting. Where is my motivation to buy MS products in Israel? I get no discount or any special offer what so ever, and the prices here are usually higher to to importing and taxes.

Between International Laws and the EU constantly harassing MS, what did you expect?

EU BS aside, MS is usually limited on discounts based on laws of your home Country, so you might want to blame them as much as MS for it.

#22 nstuff on 26 Jun 2009 - 11:19
I'm really interested in this and might bite. As MS did not make Win7 Ultimate any cheaper and has once again screwed the 'ultimate' customers.

I did some digging and found this MS page: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/subscri...s/dd464803.aspx

from that page:
"Expired Subscriber Access

Q: After my Subscription expires can I still download products and claim product keys?

A: Only Subscribers with active subscriptions can download products and claim product keys, so you will not be able to download products after your Subscription has expired.

You will be able to view Product Keys you had claimed while your Subscription was active, but you will not be able to claim new keys. In order to access your prior claimed keys, you will have to Sign in to Live ID using the account and Subscription information that you had used to access your subscription benefits and claim those keys.

NOTE: Based on program and agreement restrictions, some expired Volume License subscribers are not currently entitled to view their previously claimed keys."

So, that sounds like to me that the licenses you are granted under the technet subscription (as long as you obtain the key during an active subscription and the iso image) are perpetual and the license itself does not expire, while your subscription to access more/new licenses does. This is what i was hoping and really makes this sound like the way to go.

Technet product keys, do they expire after your technet subscription has run out, or do they never expire?

I am tempted to purcahse a subscription for the reason being that i am able to test microsofts software without having the problem of "oh noes, my cd key has expired after 2 months of use!"

Any ideas guys?

Thanks
#29 +majortom1981 on 26 Jun 2009 - 13:00
Technet is very worth it if you are an IT guy at a job .It gives you 2 free microsoft tech support calls wich is a life saver say if your domain controllers stops working.

Also the downloadable technet library is very usefull.

Then you have all the free software. the $250 is well worth it.

PS CD keys dont exxpire. i have been using a technet cdkey on my home pc for vista ultimate and it hasnt expired. They are normal retail software. So keep that in mind
#30 Frank Fontaine on 26 Jun 2009 - 13:01
Another case in which the UK gets ripped off. Why the hell is it so much more expensive
#31 lee26 on 26 Jun 2009 - 13:30
If you're interested in the more expensive windows 7 editions like professional and ultimate and are also interested in office software then technet is the way to go.

I saved over 200 when vista and office 2007 were released by going through this route.

Plus you get all the software months before it's general release.

It seems to me that the "evaluation" purposes statement puts people off but it really shouldn't. You just "evaluate" the software until the next release.

By the way the "TNCARE09" code for the UK is an old 20% discount code that expires at the end of the month and not on the 3rd of July as implied in the article.

Agreed. The level of ethics I've seen in this thread is rather disappointing. It's not made any better by the fact that nowhere in the article is it mentioned that the 'full versions' are for TRIAL & TESTING ONLY...NOT for personal or commercial use.

It still costs big money to buy this technet thing. Its not like people are getting it for free or something. I'm even still debating if its even worth it due to its high cost.

Its also not liket his is some big secret, Microsoft has a whole website advertising it. Even the website displays the discount price. Apparently they do this several times each year.

It's not meant for home users though. It's meant for business to try before they buy. Or for developers to use for testing and development.

Do you really think Microsoft would want you to buy a $350 subscription over a regular license for Vista Ultimate...and another for Office 2007? Both of which would net the company more than your $350 subscription fee? No, they wouldn't. There's an old saying, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. It applies in this case....if you're going to use the subscription the legal way.

It's right on the technet frontpage as well...

"A TechNet Plus subscription includes premium resources to help you evaluate Microsoft technologies, plan deployments and support your current IT environment."

Key word, EVALUATE.

Really??? They have windows home server on there which I think may be for the home. You might want to let microsoft know about their own policies and that they are breaking them.
#33 Anaron on 26 Jun 2009 - 14:28

If Windows 7 RTM is reached early July as rumoured when is Technet likely to get it on it's listings?
#40 Anaron on 26 Jun 2009 - 17:37
The availability of the RTM build of Windows 7 is expected for MSDN and TechNet subscribers, but not guaranteed. So far there hasn't been an official announcement regarding it.

So any guestimates as to availability. How long after Vista RTM did it appear on Technet?
#41.1 Anaron on 26 Jun 2009 - 19:31
Windows Vista RTM (Build 6000) was made on November 1, 2006. It was finalized on November 8, 2006 and later made available to MSDN/TechNet subscribers on November 16, 2006.

Going by that, it's safe to assume that Windows 7 RTM will be made available on MSDN/TechNet 8 or so days after it's finalized.

Thanks for the heads up Neowin. Time to renew anyway so the code was very useful.

Windows 7 will be on Technet. For the time you are subscribed you get every OS. Way it always has been and I can't see they would change that for 7, especially when far more powerful OS's (2008 Server for example) are available.

#43.1 Anaron on 26 Jun 2009 - 20:40
Trial? None that I know of. I'm having a hard time imagining how they'd offer a trial of any kind. The whole point of subscribing to TechNet is to have access to a plethora of software as well as their product keys.
#43.2 poind on 27 Jun 2009 - 01:15
I believe you can essentially browse the site. You just can't download or get keys.

That's the closest they can do to a trial of a trial.

OK so I got a subscription (in the UK) using the promo code. On the "Manage Subscriptions" page, however, I am seeing:

Expiration Date: 1/1/1900

Perhaps this is something to do with the fact that I took up that "free" technet deal on neowin a few weeks back... Anyone else seeing that?
#44.1 poind on 27 Jun 2009 - 01:14
If I recall, they send you an email so you "activate" the account that you'll need to do.

And then it takes a couple more days for the expiration to be accurate and the account to be fully "live."

Make sure their emails don't get dumped to spam, but don't worry about the expiration unless it's still that way in a week.

I live in Dubai (Middle East). Will I be able to take advantage of the discount? I tried both the U.S and U.K versions, when it comes to billing, I am unable to change the country to the United Arab Emirates.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks.

It is one year. And there is no expiration for the key.
But are downloads still available once the one year subscription has expired?

Well I went ahead and did it, all registered and logged in. Looking forward to getting Win 7 Ultimate RTM and Office 2010 when they come out :-)) and I will be evaluating them for a very long time...

code is working in uk I am at the order page.

TechNet Plus Direct Download Only All Languages £234.21
£187.37

the 234 is crossed out.

I do actually get multiple keys right so basically I can install win 7 ultimate 3 times (when released), and office 3 times so all my 3 pcs can umm evaluate latest windows and office?
