AeroXperience's Bryant Zadegan has got his hands on an exclusive look at the Windows 7 Anytime Upgrade retail boxing. Those who are familiar with the Windows Vista Anytime Upgrade will remember that it was only pushed online, but Zadegan says that "Microsoft will indeed be pushing Anytime Upgrade through retail channels."

On Tuesday, Microsoft unveiled the final design for the regular retail box. The anytime upgrade boxes are the same shape and design as the full version or regular upgrade boxes, except slightly smaller since they just contain a product key used to migrate Windows 7 from Home Premium to Professional or Ultimate from within the Windows 7 control panel.

It's a... box... you need to get out more.

The boxart is nice, but it seems a little crowded compared to the normal boxart.

They should make them like gift cards with a scratch-off product key and they're activated at the register. Less packaging...

Thats what I thought about the Xbox Live cards until I ordered one from Best Buy. It came in a 12"X12" box stuffed with air pockets. All that just to read the code and throw it all away.

I agree. Seems waistful.

I'm disappointed.

I could accept the slightly larger than necessary box to enclose actual media, but this marginally smaller box to hold nothing more than a product key is a joke. The whole speil about reducing packaging to be more environmentally friendly is nothing more than a blatant PR lie.

Talk about excessive packaging. Why not just make the box the same size as the DVD?
#7 FloatingFatMan on 26 Jun 2009 - 08:04
What a complete and utter waste of resources. A stupid sized box JUST for a product key? They do the same with those XBox Points cards too... A DVD case containing a bleeping credit card.

Quit being a waster, Microsoft!

I thought one of the main selling points of Anytime Upgrade was that you could do it from the comfort of your own desk just by clicking a link on screen and entering a credit card number. I suppose this adds an option for folks without credit cards though.

yes but there is no need for all that packageing just for a product key.
#10 ThomMcK on 26 Jun 2009 - 10:37
Well if no one buys it then I'm sure Microsoft will realise it's a stupid idea.
They do a similar thing with Office 2007 Media-less License Keys (for pre-installed trial versions on "Office Ready PCs" but it is in a paper case not plastic. That would be better and still give you something to put on the shelf next to all the other DVDs

If you mean upgrade, then I do not believe so. But you can format and install over the RC.
