A little bird has informed me of an official Microsoft hosted survey in which the winner(s) will receive a free copy of Windows 7 Ultimate after simply filling out a 4 question survey. It couldn't be any easier than this folks. The survey is entitled "Windows 7 Discovery", and the instructions are crystal clear:

"We want to know how you find information about Windows 7 from Microsoft. Please answer questions in the survey below for a chance to win a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate Edition when it becomes available [available] in Oct 2009."

In order to be eligible for the survey, which is hosted on SurveyMonkey.com, all you have to do is answer the following questions:

1. Name and e-mail address.
2. What group best describer your role?
3. What term would you use to search for a Microsoft page about Windows 7?
4. Which URL would you most likely type to find information on the latest version of Windows?

So what are you waiting for, head on over to the survey and good luck.

Does that run in wine?

Also, email attachments do not have the "execute" attribute set. I suppose I would have to set this manually, as well.

#3.2 GP007 on 30 Jun 2009 - 07:09
They stopped having that set in Windows long ago as well. You'd still have to run/open the attachment yourself. So in the end, it's right back to user error/stupidity.

I entered. Now to see what happens later on.

If this is a spam trap, I used an e-mail address that is normally used for newsletters and stuff anyway.

What are you talking about?

He means it's not spam or a fraud. The link is a Microsoft case study about the company that's conducting the survey.

"One lucky winner will get a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate Edition when it becomes available this Oct" - per the Microsoft blog where this link is from

sounds fishy

I'd expect the prize will go unclaimed...
Someone in October will go "Oh, I won a free copy of Windows 7, right, just enter enough personal info to choke a horse and wait for my identity to be stolen before delivery."
#10.1 GreyWolfSC on 30 Jun 2009 - 03:48
Did you even look at it? It only asks for a name and e-mail address. Use Hotmail or Gmail.
#10.2 Hak Foo on 30 Jun 2009 - 04:48
Exactly. So when the winner gets the email in three months saying "Where do we send it" and possibly "who do we make the 1099 out to?"
#11 Raa on 30 Jun 2009 - 03:13
Here we go

Hmm, considering the mistakes found above, I don't think it sounds legit...
(2 replies) #12 Dr_Asik on 30 Jun 2009 - 03:16
How do you know it's officially from Microsoft? There's nothing that says so on the page. And how are they supposed to send you a copy of Windows 7 if all they have is your email? This sounds dubious.
#12.1 boogerjones on 30 Jun 2009 - 03:17
It's not official. Do we really need to debate that point?
#12.2 Dr_Asik on 30 Jun 2009 - 13:48
Well then why does the news say "an official Microsoft hosted survey" ?
#13 Nihilus on 30 Jun 2009 - 03:30
This survey seems a little suspicious, anyone got any verification?
#14 freeza on 30 Jun 2009 - 03:30

techie81 said,

Seriously, what's the big deal? All it asks, is just your email address and your name.
Nothing can be done with that info, except send you spam that you probably already getting.
(1 reply) #17 stephenmv on 30 Jun 2009 - 04:05
I wonder if Microsoft is going to have another powertogether.com campaign. One could only hope.

#18 mrmomoman on 30 Jun 2009 - 04:14
Umm if you are a survey company and you can't spell available then you shouldn't perform surveys. It stinks from the head down on this one. FISHY!!

At least you weren't replying "piratebay"
#19.2 Gabe3 on 30 Jun 2009 - 17:16
its multiple choice anyway
#20 +majortom1981 on 30 Jun 2009 - 04:41
Hmm i dont know if this is real or not. I did a search for microsoft surveys and found a couple but all the ones i found had actual microsoft logos on them
#21 +stifler6478 on 30 Jun 2009 - 04:44
I took it. There isn't a whole lot that can happen. Might get some spam, but as Live Mail seems to consider @microsoft.com an unsafe sender, I think I'll be fine (not even joking about that one...).

I used the 30 emails I made for the Technet accounts a few weeks back to do the survey, I hope I get a copy or two.

edit: ****, i just read that only one winner will be chosen!

Wow, how generous.
#24 debsuvra on 30 Jun 2009 - 05:10
I think the contest is over for now. The link is redirecting to Stephen Rose's technet blog.
#25 Matt on 30 Jun 2009 - 05:31
I was able to sign up.

What was the other method to get Windows 7 for free? You had to be signed up for something and test the RC release for at least 3-4 months right?
(1 reply) #26 David087 on 30 Jun 2009 - 05:34
After you press submit after filling out the suvery is it suppose to take you to Stephen Rose's technet blog or did I press submit button too late early when the suvery was available, does it have congratulations you entered or something or this takes you to the blog?
#26.1 Cjay on 30 Jun 2009 - 06:12

I hope I could win the prize. All my life I was unlucky at any contest, and with my status in life and crisis here in our country, I can't afford to buy a copy and will be stuck on my winxp home , I hope I could win a copy, though I am not expecting to win but I am praying I'll win.

The survey was created by Stephen Rose - Sr Community Manager - Windows Client IT Pro, when you complete the survey you get redirected to his official blog on Technet. He's done this before by the sounds of it and this survery was only launched on 29th June and will close 12PM PST today (30th)
#31.1 Raa on 30 Jun 2009 - 07:44
Still sounds fake
#32 ]SK[ on 30 Jun 2009 - 07:23
I guess they use SurveyMonkey as they use ASP.

WTH?

Does LOOK fishy, but used a junk e-mail address anyway.
#33.1 singularity0821 on 30 Jun 2009 - 08:59
But the survey is the latest post on Stephen Rose's (SR Community Manager) blog... (the website you're redirected to after finishing the survey)

I don't see a link...
#37 +shinji257 on 30 Jun 2009 - 15:54
Use that link and click on the survey post if you are concerned about it being legit.

http://blogs.technet.com/stephenrose/archi...-windows-7.aspx

Anything posted on a blog hosted on the technet.com domain is extremely likely to be legit.
#38 +statm1 on 30 Jun 2009 - 19:37
On stephen roses blog after taking the survey he says that the survey closes June 30th 12pm PST.. That was 36 mins ago.. But it still let me take it.. I hope they are late closing it..

#40 DigitalE on 01 Jul 2009 - 04:19
Awesome.

I'd be curious to see the results of this survey, but it's likely they won't be published
