Microsoft pulls 'sickening' Internet Explorer 8 ads

Sam Symons   on 02 July 2009 - 21:14 · 127 comments & 23429 views

Advertisement (Why?)
Last week, Microsoft released some ads for Internet Explorer 8 that were intended to provide a "tongue-in-cheek look" at some of the new features of the browser. Unfortunately for them, there were those that weren't quite so happy watching a woman vomit, and as the Wall Street Journal reports, they've been removed.

The title for the ad was "O.M.G.I.G.P.", or for those not quite down with acronyms, "Oh My God I'm Going To Puke". It featured a man happily sharing his laptop with his partner; to her horror, he was viewing some generic revolting website (yes, whilst sitting at the table with his loved one), and thus, much projectile vomiting ensued. On him. After he slipped on it. It's truly worrying as to how, or why, a company would release such an ad, but the truth is that it happened and hopefully Microsoft are wiser from the experience. If you didn't catch the ad, we've included it below (keep in mind it'll probably be taken down soon).

A spokesperson for Microsoft said that, "While much of the feedback to this particular piece of creative was positive, some of our customers found it offensive, so we have removed it." This video has had Technologizer raise the question: is this the worst tech ad ever made?

is this for real?
darn worst than their Songsmith ads

They still got the "Seinfeld & Gates' trouble in suburbia" as their worst ad. And this one has people vomiting in it.

Meanwhile could you imagine ANY other marketing team come up with this? Apple??

It would be even more more hilarious if family was from "The Brady Bunch" 1970's TV series.

If I found IE8 on the laptop, I'd go "Oh my god I'm gonna puke" as well
So it's at least realistic, for once.

I don't know if it's the worst ad ever, but it's up there. What kind of retarded marketing department would approve this? "Hey, I've got an idea... let's make our customers associate IE 8 with vomiting!"

CNET had the article up there about a week ago when the ad was released. There's like 3 other ads that they made too, btw, and they all have this similar "humor" to them. I LOLed.

But for an Internet browser? Please tell me it doesn't have to do with how IE displays pages, because it's more IE who makes me puke all the time, not following the standards

Try paying attention to the ad. It's made quite clear why the woman is puking (and it was amusing).

There is enough ambiguity to suggest a drive-by malware infection from which IE suffers perennially caused the pornographic allusion. Only at the end does superman(dean cain) try and rationalise the response; which is odd because every browser I know of already supports private browsing in some form or another. Not only but also, this is highly suggestive that the private browsing mode's only function is to hide salacious activities when there are many moralistic applications of the technology.

It's a viral ad campaign that's done exactly what it was set out to do. Its been shared in numerous forums (including Mac ones), its been passed through email inboxes and its made the newspapers. Seems like a success to me. Microsoft may officially "remove" the ad, but that baby has become a rolling stone.

I understand marketing perfectly. The problem is that the group this ad targets (the tech community) already knows about IE 8. For everyone else (the non-tech savvy), this is a very negative ad that will be taken the wrong way. Hands down a poor choice, even if the goal was to simply generate buzz.

Except when the product is IE.

Is it just me or is it a coincidence that this advert comes out at a time when it's under investigation by the EU and will most probably be forced to include competing browsers with the OS? This further reinforces the notion that IE only now has to compete / market itself because it can't ship its browser as the default, and thus has lost its monopolistic advantage (at the least in europe). A more significant vindication of the EC's decision could not be found.

No more of a coincidence than that said EU investigation mysteriously began right before they were going to release a new browser.

MS marketing is cracking up. Making an ad like this is just disturbing. Imagine them pitching this in the boardroom?

MS cubicle drone: ... yes and then she will explosively vomit green vomit all over the room.
Steve Ballmer: Genius. Absolute genius. We need to go big with this. Vomit is going to be the new Google! The kids love vomit! Bill's going to flip when he hears this. Where's my iPhone, I gotta call him up right now...

So the take home message is that if you are surfing sites with content that would make your partner want to vomit all over you uncontrollably the solution is to use a different browser that hides the habit?

Since I don't have a fetish that would make my partner want to puke all over me, I guess I don't need Internet Explorer 8. That's what this ad says to me.

Crayon drawings from pre-schoolers could sell Internet Explorer better than this.

Hahaaaaa they have a grandparents ad too, the grandpa is trying to surf the web, and he's using an outdated browser, so it's slow, and he's saying...

"I have gritting rage!!" (banging on the laptop)

(Superman walks out) "Do your grandparents experience gritting rage? Or G.R.I.P.E.S? They're probably using an outdated browser. Upgrade them to IE 8 and cure their gritting rage"

(grandpa notices him) "How did you get in my house?"

(Grandson answers) "He's Dean Cain, he lives in our chair"

lol, cuz in the other ads, Dean's always talking in this one chair, u should just watch them.

Yeah I think you've hit the nail on the head there. When you're promoting something there's no such thing as bad publicity.

Thing is, there's plenty of guys out there who know enough about a PC to find porn, but not enough to know how to cover their tracks. Ads like this tap right into their deepest fears. If they cut out the barfing they could run something similar on TV and push IE8 quite well to those guys.

I mean are you offended by your child or friends puking? no cause not! so why get all ****ed about this advert. Get a bloody grip, it's funny....even if a little ott, but far from offencive

I can just see the new Mac vs PC ads now.

PC: I am feeling sick... I have this feeling like lava trying to escape from my gut!
Mac: That is probably the all new Internet Explorer 8, we don't have that problem anymore as Microsoft figured Mac users never wanted Internet Explorer anyway.

Mac: WOW.

this is CLEARLY a viral ad, and it has 100% worked.

It has associated Bing with vomit and made MS a laughingstock. You call that a success?

Um, yeah... Bad publicity to you is great publicity to someone else. It puts the brand infront of faces that it would not have been otherwise. You start getting the effect of "I am tired of those stiff shirts telling me what I cannot find funny, this is different man!"

Do not forget, the generation coming into power now is the one that made the "JackA$$" empire popular (modified it by name incase the filter system picked it up, its the name of a show so I assume its not worthy of a warning.)

Hopefully they either fire their marketing team, or they fire the marketing firm they hired to do these stupid commercials!

This is unbelievable. Now we can all understand why their market share will continue to downfall.

Fire-able offense.

About the worst English speaking advert I've ever seen.
Gross.

Whoever thinks this is funny IMO need to re-asses their reactions. Nervous laughter?

Love it or hate it... You watched it didn't you? You told others about it I am sure. They went on to tell others in a chain. You became an advertiser for them via this commercial (or anyone did who forwarded it and said "omg can you believe this?!")

M$ has lost touch with the real world. Please bring back Bill and Seinfeld.

That is the problem, if the "real world" actually cared about Bill Gates and Seinfeld now, those commercials would have been a hit. They tanked quite fast and yes they served the same purpose of getting people to talk about it, it quickly died down. It had no "wow" power or anything that made it stand out. Its like watching two rich old men talk about who pays more taxes (or the least.)

Like I said above, "normal people" are growing towards shock factor. You will spend more time looking at a mangled car wreck than at a new car lot while driving by. One says WOW while the other says "meh."

I find it really funny...
#72 Quikboy on 04 Jul 2009 - 17:28
That was pretty funny actually, but they could have done without letting viewers SEE the vomit, or better yet, find another way to express her shock.

Makes me wonder how smart anyone is on this site (even the author).
This obviously a viral ad and was intended to be over the top and gross and then to be pulled. Now it's been pulled more people will see it than ever and it will be a success.
