iPods to get cameras in September?

Advertisement (Why?)
Based on recent actions by Apple it would appear that the next generation of iPods will be getting cameras. Rumors from around the web are citing independent verification that the iPod will receive a camera which only makes sense as an evolutionary step.

The iPod Touch seems like the most likely candidate to receive the camera as it is currently the top of the line iPod for Apple. Even more so is that the software to take pictures, record video, and edit the film is already written as the software for the iPhone.

TechCrunch is citing a source from within Asia that claims "Apple has placed an order for a massive number of camera modules of the type that they include in the iPhone. These are inexpensive cameras, in the $10 range. And the size of the order, our source says, means they can only be used for one thing - the iPods."

Macrumors has also posted up screen shots of a leaked iPod Touch case that has a hole cut out for the placement of the camera. Even more interesting is that there is also a leaked case for possibly the iPod Nano that also has a hole cut out for possibly a camera too. Remember though that case leaks are not a guaranteed source of information as there were leaks about an iPhone nano that never turned out to be true.

Apple generally releases new iPods in the September timeframe and usually runs a back to school special where buying a laptop nets you a free iPod (this is done to help clear out old inventory). Will Apple add a camera to its iPod line, probably, but which iPods will receive the camera still remains a mystery.

sounds interesting. i think it'll be the ipod touch which will get the camera as its so similar to the iphone

+1 of course it will be the ipod touch.

Yeah, I would be VERY surprised if the Nano got a camera too... Apple puts a lot of effort into trying to get you to buy the highest end model, so including the camera in the Nano would go against that philosophy...

i got my iPod touch for free (traded my phone for it) however i am not sure i would be willing to pay the price they ask for these devices to get the upgrade even though mine is the 1G iPod touch.
#2.1 PsykX on 06 Jul 2009 - 16:34
If you sell your iPod 1G, you can still get a good price. You have to calculate the difference between what you sell and what you buy.

I know I'm just stating the obvious, don't congratulate me here... but every time I talk to people about "upgrading" stuff, they think they're going to throw their old device away or something. No, you're gonna get money for it You could sell it for AT LEAST $100, especialy if it's a 16GB in good state with the earphones and the original box and dock cable.

Also, they might as well remove the 8GB version, and just go with a 16GB, 32GB and 64GB. Which means the 16GB will be like 259 CAD, this is still much better than if you paid 329 CAD!

So if you get the brand shiny new 16GB iPod Touch and sell your old one, you may end up paying less than 159 + taxes. Increased speed, digital compass, new camera, Nike+iPod support, earphones+mic support, external speaker, firmware 3.0 for free, and maybe new features that they will introduce in September ... not bad!

Don't sell the original headphones, sell some good headphones with it. Orignial one's aren't worth a cent!
#2.3 PsykX on 07 Jul 2009 - 16:33
As of now, I've tried a few pairs of earphones and Apple's pair was the one that fitted the best in my ears. I don't feel anything when I put them for a long time. I've had Sennheisers for a long time but they hurt me and gave me electrical shocks during Winter, so screw these.

The old ones from Apple back at iPod 4G were horrible, but the ones after that are perfect for me. The sound is good and I don't feel them, and I can't lose these little black foams because they were removed.

Also, are you seriously going to buy a brand new pair of headphones to sell it with your iPod and lose even more money? Or sell it at full price? It won't change a thing because "you'll be stuck with an Apple headphone and they're not worth a cent"

Oh I hope the iPod Touch does NOT get a camera. I love the fact that it is only 7 mm thick, and I don't want any unnecessary features making it any larger than it needs to be.

I've never understood why it is necessary to include a camera in everything. If I wanted a camera, I would bring my camera. What's the point of taking a crappy low res picture with no flash anyway?
#3.1 Mav Phoenix on 06 Jul 2009 - 13:02
It's for the people who don't even know what res is. They are content with low quality since it's in a handy device. But I agree, too many things have cameras in them these days.
#3.2 bdsams on 06 Jul 2009 - 13:16
agreed, if i need a camera ill either use the one on my cell phone or bring my PnS with me for higher quality photos....i cant see myself replacing either one with the ipod touch unless its 8mp with a decent lense and flash

My phone has a 3.2MPx sensor and shoots amazing video/photos. The days of crappy VGA sensors are long gone.
#3.4 roadwarrior on 06 Jul 2009 - 16:01
Even the 2MP camera in the iPhone 3G takes decent pictures. Nothing you would want to blow up to poster size, but certainly good enough for snapshots. Megapixel snobs tend to forget that even a full HD TV is only 2MP, and many computer displays aren't even that high.

Actually the iphone takes more than acceptable photos. Most other devices that have cameras usually lack in that department. It is also handy when you need to take a picture but forgot your normal camera.

its for taking a quick picture of something. and for people who don't want to carry a ipod, phone, and camera in their pocket. yes the camera would be crappy on a ipod but at least you can take a picture of something.

Oh please. Read what I and shinji257 wrote. The photo quality from the iPhone is MORE than acceptable for snapshots, and is already the same resolution as an HDTV. The idea that a 2MP camera is "crappy" is a load of bull.
#3.8 Meconio on 06 Jul 2009 - 21:52
Well actually i would rather have a mic on the ipod touch instead of a camera, i mean is waaay more practical, you could get your hands on the voice controls, and really take advantage of Voip apps without forgetting the ability to send voice clips over the IMs apps so you don't have to buy the extra phones.....so better CPU and a MIC sure sounds find to me, some improvements over the music management interface would it be fine too.

I will take a very light dedicated camera over any phone/device integrated camera. I really like to take memories, but without any cost of quality.

I don't think giving the iPod's a camera will be good. Less battery time, more weight and things to care about...no, I don't like the idea of audio players with cameras.

Cellphones with decent cameras are enough for the majority.

If it comes with a camera, YOU DON'T HAVE TO USE IT. I don't like watching movies on it, so you know what I do? Don't watch them. I don't complain to everybody who will hear that they should remove it.

Well you Apple gotta give "something new" in the new ipod's so here they are they are giving a camera.

They have already run design into the ground. Drip feeding stuff like this is what keeps them selling and remaining the new thing.

Were it "just a normal MP3 Player" you wouldn't be able to download apps or watch movies... Everyone one bitched about iPods not having an FM tuner, now that they add things like a camera it's suddenly crap?
#4.3 Sranshaft on 06 Jul 2009 - 14:33
Adding an FM Tuner and adding a camera are two completely different beasts. A FM Tuner would be great for listening to music. You know, what an MP3 player was originally all about.

I just don't see where a camera fits into the equation. It might just be I'm starting to suffer from old-man-itis but I prefer my devices to do what they are meant to do and enough with all the fluff. What's next? Mobile phones with coffee makers?

Like WooHoo!! said, this is just Apple's attempt to get the masses to buy yet another iPod-whatit.

The iPod Touch is MEANT to have as many features as possible. It's like a really small computer in the end.

If you want a regular MP3 player that's called an iPod, this is exactly why Apple offers the iPod Classic, Nano and Shuffle. or else these wouldn't exist, right?
#4.6 yert* on 06 Jul 2009 - 17:31
@Papz. Why didn't you get a classic iPod then or a different player? Duh!

What happens if you go to a gym that has a strict no-camera policy? I know a lot of places ban camera phones and other devices.
#5.1 Chasethebase on 06 Jul 2009 - 13:53
TBH a gym isn't the first place I'd take my iPod Touch, I'd be more inclined to take a Nano or Shuffle with me.

Tbh I wouldn't spend hundred on having every variety of iPod just so that I could take a specific one to the gym.
#5.3 darkmanx21 on 06 Jul 2009 - 14:15
People do take it the gym though..I see people on the bikes and ellipticals watching shows all the time. The device is so thin..it'd be thicker if they added a camera kind of taking away from it. Plus, it's going to come with a 2 megapixel camera? No thanks.

Theres a 4mm difference between the 3G and the iPod Touch, but the difference may be more to do with a larger battery / phone stuff than the camera. :p

Put a normal case on it, without the camera hole. Most people won't know that it has a camera, unless you suggest that you get interrogated each time, and they xray your device?

i would purchase an ipod touch now however i would like atleast 64GB. I for one hope there isn't a camera but Apple look at updating the memory size.
#6.1 PsykX on 06 Jul 2009 - 18:04
In all honesty, I thought they would have released a 64GB version in September 2008. Now, I don't know what reason they had not to release it (did it exist? would it have made the Touch much thicker because they had to combine differentmemory chips, etc?)

But this year I'm very positive they will release it. Even the iPhone 8GB model was dropped. Well, there's the 3G but I mean, it's the old model!

Also, so far, one of the only + of an iPod Touch over the iPhone is the bigger capacity. They might as well repeat history by getting a new 64GB version out

Because 64 GB of flash is close to twice as expensive as 32 GB of flash if you buy the same chip density.

Now we just very recently (last month, IIRC) evolved to 32 nm flash chips (from 50 nm) on a large scale that will reduce cost significantly, but it will take some time and don't bet on seeing an affordable 64 GB flash player until next year.

Because they released the 32 gig version (up from 16 gig). The last iphone they upgraded to 32 gig mem, the new touch should go to 64 gig, unless Apple decide that that is too much for people, or it doesn't fit into there price point. They should though.
#7 Dc'1 on 06 Jul 2009 - 13:55
That's a good idea, I've never found a real reason to be able to put pictures on an iPod. Now there is a reason lol.
#8 DrunknMunky on 06 Jul 2009 - 14:07
I remember when this was rumoured to happen way back as far as 2005 and the introduction of the iPod Colour. Sounds good though, I hope Apple do include the camera in the Touch.
#9 antareus on 06 Jul 2009 - 14:29
I just want them to merge the hard drive model with the Touch functionality. My 2001 iPod is slipping away, despite my battery upgrade.

But then we wouldn't have artificial market segmentation like all those good little MBA drones were taught.
#10 cerealfreak on 06 Jul 2009 - 15:17
I have a 1st G touch, got it free when I upgraded my phone. I enjoy it for what it is, especially as I Jailbroke it. Iwould consider shelling out for a new one in the next couple of years maybe, a camera wouldn't sway it though, my new phone (N97 coming my way soon) more then handles it, the main reason for me would be the update of bluetooth for my MotoRokR Headphones and bigger capacity currently 8gb, would love it to be 160gb
#11 briangw on 06 Jul 2009 - 15:33
I would rather have GPS in my touch
#12 PsykX on 06 Jul 2009 - 16:29
Ok, I always bring my iPod Touch with me and I always WANT to bring a camera with me, but it's too big and I hate the quality.

If they put the same camera in the iPod Touch than they did in the iPhone, and if it can record video, I'm changing my 1G iPod Touch for this one for sure.
#13 AUSSIE_FLOYD_FAN on 06 Jul 2009 - 16:52
i might be a nice feature. i got a 2nd gen ipod touch .... 8gb i only have about 300 songs on it.. then a couple movies...... i use the maps feature and games and apps so often a camera might be a good upgrade. it wouldnt have to make it much more thicker

The camera on the iPhone isn't really that great. My recent purchase of the iPhone has eliminated my need to bring my Nintendo DS Lite and Zune 80GB with me on travel... however, I'll still be bringing my little Kodak point-and-shoot digital camera. The iPhone camera would probably be more functional for me if it had a built in flash. Still, pretty handy thing to have none-the-less.
#15.1 roadwarrior on 06 Jul 2009 - 21:12
I guess that really depends on the lighting you are trying to use it in. I've taken some really nice pictures with my wife's iPhone, and some really lousy ones with my 8MP Kodak camera. If you are taking outdoor shots or indoor shots in a well lit area, then an iPhone can take some very good pictures. Flashes are really overused by people who don't know any better, which is why so many people think that a camera without a flash is "crappy". I have yet to see a phone camera flash that was worth a damn anyway (most of them are simply a bright LED).

A flash would make it more versatile. Of course not every shot needs a flash. But when it comes to indoor shots or dimly lit social gatherings (where a lot of pictures are being taken) a flash is extremely useful. But next time I'm in the mood for some mid day nature shots I'll keep my iPhone in mind.

I've never used those models, so I'll take your word for it. However, MOST of the camera phones I've seen that have a flash are utterly useless unless your subject is less than a foot away, and at that distance you really shouldn't use a flash anyway.

#19 Digix on 07 Jul 2009 - 18:41
although I agree it's a valid point if you have a cell phone with a camera but seriously is another one which is also just as beneficial for different purposes going to be that bad... I mean it can be handy for other uses. Like why would you carry an ipod touch if you have an iphone, some people choose to because for whatever reason they find it handy or whatever. Same applies to adding a camera really. I just wish could have added GPS as well so not bottle necked by applications in app store... or even better add camera to zuneHD if it's going to have apps and whatnot with tegra and all...
