Update: The videos are now online and can be viewed below.

Neowin recently reported that footage of the July 1969 live broadcast of the Apollo 11 moonwalk had been recovered after being lost for nearly 40 years. When NASA said that it was a hoax and nothing had been found many were left disappointed. Fortunately, NASA was either covering up the discovery or the person who made the announcement was uninformed.

At 11 a.m. EDT on Thursday, July 16 NASA will hold a press conference and release the recently found footage. "The release will feature 15 key moments from Neil Armstrong's and Buzz Aldrin's historic moonwalk using what is believed to be the best available broadcast-format copies of the lunar excursion, some of which had been locked away for nearly 40 years. The initial video released Thursday is part of a comprehensive Apollo 11 moonwalk restoration project expected to be completed by the fall. "

When the original story broke it seemed as if it could, indeed, be actually true. The events that were described seemed plausible and with the restoration project under way it seemed likely the footage may turn up. Thankfully it was not a hoax and we shall all soon see the lost footage.

When NASA put a man on the moon it was a triumph of achievement for the US as it showed its technical capabilities and its dedication to space exploration. NASA spent years planning for and developing specialized equipment for the mission. One such piece of equipment was a high resolution video camera that would send back images to Earth.

Because of the lack of technology at the time the video feed from the moon actually had to be compressed and scaled down to work on televisions across the world. After the initial recording of the high resolution stream from the moon the film went missing after its shipment back to the US. The only surviving record was a 16mm film that was shot at a black and white TV which gives us the only surviving recorded copy until today.

In Perth, Australia scientists were looking in old storage rooms for other data when they stumbled upon tapes from NASA which they thought would be information regarding moon dust from several later missions to the moon. To their surprise it was the long lost high resolution film from the first moon walk.

Thanks to Neowin member jameswjrose for the news tip

People seem to forget that NASA *did* return to the moon after Apollo 11. Several times, in fact.

Yeah, funny thing they never look at the facts which denies all those stupid theories and answers the questions.

It's far easier to remain uneducated and ignorant than to pursue the truth with a little bit of READING.

Heaven forbid they should have to admit they were snookered by some conspiracy theory nut and are WRONG about their ridiculous "we didn't go to the Moon" or "9-11 was an inside job" insanity.

Only thing worse than conspirationists is people who are totally ignorant about the facts and accept every half-baked answer the die-hard NASA fans give just to believe their little beloved country got to the moon.

well i seen Mythbusters and that episode with the 'flag' (conspiracy theorist claim the flag cant blow/move since there's no wind etc) was proven it CAN move like that on the moon.

but i just seen a show on the History Channel not long ago and it does make you wonder about the landing on the moon, if it was real or not.

i guess maybe in the future we can get powerful enough telescopes and then once and for all prove if the landing was real by looking at the stuff left behind and the footprints etc etc.

That's been done a few times already by probes. In one pic you can actually see the Landing Site of one of the Apollo landing sites. I'll see if I can dig it up. But remember, we have instruments that were placed on the moon by the astronauts that are still in use by Astronomers to this day. The Observatories in Hawaii come to mind.

The Chinese satellite has already been taking hi-def footage, good footage too. The US has a new satelite orbiting the moon as of a few weeks ago.

It's one of those things where the "going to get evidence" gets built up more than the actual result, especially when there's vested interests in the continuing "debate" over whether we went to the Moon.
#5.6 TRC on 14 Jul 2009 - 20:38
There is no debate, other than coming from conspiracy nuts. The type that also believe aliens crashed at area 51 and are still being held there.
#5.7 excalpius on 14 Jul 2009 - 20:38
The "vested interests" are just the mentally ill (usually paranoid schizophrenics off their meds) Moon deniers. It's the only way these nobodies get media attention.

Since crop circles, big foot, and the loch ness monster have all been admitted as hoaxes by the perpetrators, this is one of the only 1970's nutter conspiracy theories left to these kooks.

Before leaving the moon, the astronauts also left a mirror on the surface. There is an observatory with a built-in laser in the telescope, who every now and then fires of this laser to this mirror and catches the signal being bounced back. Should be proof enough.

The story comes straight from Nasa' site, so that leads a bit of credability to it. The one part of the press release that got me wondering is the part that mentions restoration of the footage. Is this the "lost" footage, or is this the original but it has been restored? The press release is a bit vague on it. Yes, it mentions that the footage has been locked away for nearly 40 years... but that could mean the broadcast footage, not the footage lost in Australia. So, for the moment I am hopeful in any case.

Peace,
James

I'd love to know what the format it was shot in was? obviously it was a custom one... what method of recording did they use? heck does anyone even have a player that still works to play it back? (obviously NASA had at least one)
#8.1 jameswjrose on 14 Jul 2009 - 18:43
There was an article in Wired in the last 12 to 24 months about this footage. The article included an interview with the person who created the camera used and the tech information. Very geek cool. I'm sure a search on Wired.com will lead you to this info.
#8.2 excalpius on 14 Jul 2009 - 20:41
The data was digitally transmitted, much like the Mars footage. That's the "restoration" and reconstruction aspect of it.

Also, if there were any atmospheric dropouts, the signals received by other stations would have missing pieces/data that could be factored in.

Either way, it should look a hell of a lot better than the crappy 1960's TV broadcast some of us watched live in 1969.

AFAIK, NASA hasn't said exactly when they found this, just that it has been found.

So there may be no coincidence, but NASA holding it until the right moment.

unfortunately you're completely off with your examples there. The sky has been deliberately removed from the film. If you took the time to actually research your material, then you'd know that the crosses are markers on the lens of the camera used on the moon. This camera was an adapted earth camera, which also has the same lens markings. No matter what you pointed the camera at, the markers would still be shown; regardless of the background colour as the markings are physically attached to the lens itself. Some of the footage from nasa is missing the upper markings, evidence that someone has removed an area of the picture, taking the marking with it.

NASA can go on digging at the hole they made for themselves. If they wanted to dispel conspiracy theorists, they could just release the co-ordinates, so any of the probes could film the sites (the moon is a big place, and the landing sites and the debris left behind very small).

There is no doubt that NASA faked a lot of photos. The release of new film will be analysed very closely against the original photos. They are sticking their neck out on this one!

Other agencies have flown probes past the moon and have photographed the landing site.

I'm shocked that they'd value their lives or the billions of dollars spent to prepare for the mission by actually practicing for the main event.

I hear they even floated around in fake zero-G "vomit comet" flights, which they FILMED TOO! Conspiracy, fake!!! Not practice or preparation...

#32.1 xcopmanx on 16 Jul 2009 - 17:38

#32.2 +bob21 on 16 Jul 2009 - 17:50
Inertia
#32.3 highonsnow on 16 Jul 2009 - 17:55
It's moving because there's no atmosphere there to "slow" down the waving of the flag, and as such it will continue to flutter as +bob21 says, until the inertia wears out due to resistance of atmospheric resistance, if any exists!

On earth of course, we have air.. and air is heavy

Download http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?act=announce&f=12&id=11 and use Media Player Classic - I haven't installed iTunes nor Quicktime in years, and don't intend on doing it in a hurry.. it deals with Realtime, Quicktime, etc.. all media formats. Media Player Classic is the way to go. Trust me on that. Download http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?act=announce&f=12&id=11 and get the mega version, it'll have all the codecs you'll ever need

For those that believe we walked on the moon, you need to actually stop and think about what it would take to accomplish this feat that we're CURRENTLY unable to accomplish.

At the time of this hoax, the country was in turmoil and people needed something to believe in, something to hope for, that was bigger than them. Hence the ability of the human race to walk on the moon.

The technology didn't exist. First we don't have radios to this day that are capable of traveling the lengths that were needed, LET ALONE the video capabilities. The mere thought of being able to launch ourselves FROM the moon BACK to earth with a pod no bigger than a VW Bus makes me laugh.

Don't get me wrong, someday we'll be able to actually visit other planets, and even walk on them. For now though, for those that CAN'T think outside the box, enjoy your 'authentic' NASA photos that were "lost." (being doctored with today's technology to help strengthen a weakening believe that we actually NEVER accomplished.

Google it, you'll see how easy it was to accomplish. My favorite part is the Cherry Picker truck in the background, on the "moon" *gasp*

I used to believe, then I traded magic for fact. I hope you do too.

That was so stupid it hurt just to read it. I'm sure you're right though, the Saturn V rocket, computers, all that stuff didn't exist back then. The thousands of people who watched the launch in person were all hallucinating, every news outlet in the world was fooled, the hundreds if not thousands of people who would have been involved in such an elaborate hoax were either also fooled or took a vow of silence and to this day have never said a word. Even the Soviet Union amazingly decided not to call us out on it, incredible. Yep you and your fellow tinfoil hat wearing lunatics have figured it out.

You make fun of ignorance yet you think the space shuttle proves that NASA had radio equipment that can communicate with people on the moon? Not only was the space shuttle decades later, it's a walk across the street compared to going to the moon. You are a fool, even if the "conspiracy theorists" are wrong at least they have taken the time to do some research and come to their own conclusion rather than trusting the government like a little puppy.

What research? Show me research that can withstand the scrutiny of other researchers and not laughed at. Most of this "research" (and I have read a lot of it, including some postings here that I have shot down personally) has been shown over and over again (including the infamous 'c' rock which turned out to crap on a negative). Nothing has been proven. Hell Vox said he saw a cherry picker on the moon. Okay... show me the picture that shows it. He hasn't and hasn't shown it for proof.

What I find amazing is that there are so many people that think the Apollo missions were frauds... but what about the past and present Mars Missions? What about the Probes sent out to other various planets since the 60's we have launched. Are all of those programs fraud too? Hell we landed on Mars with the Viking probes in 1976. That's an amazing feat for its time. Was that program a fraud as well?

Ok I'll field this one because I get really irked about people saying the moon landings were fake. I'll take it one sentence at a time. You said we don't have radios capable of traveling the distance. Ok the Moon is on average 384,408 KM from Earth. The speed of light is approximately 299,793 KM/s (All Electromagnetic Wavelengths, including Radio, travel at the speed of light.) So lets do the math shall we (384,408/299,793=1.28 ) so that's 1.28 seconds to send a Radio transmission to the Moon and 1.28 seconds to receive a reply. You could easily have a real time conversation at that short of a delay.

As for the Launch back to Earth from the Moon's surface. Let's see the LEM (Lunar Exploration Module) only had to launch from the surface to lunar orbit to rendezvous with the Command Module in Lunar orbit. Well i'm not a Physics expert but I do know that the Moon's gravity is not near as strong as the Earth's. Lunar gravity is about 1/8th that of the Earth. The rocket motor would not need to be near as large to escape the Lunar surface and reach orbit. The rockets need to launch from Earth needed to be so large because they had to haul all the fuel and equipment into orbit.

Verifying data from a 3rd party source such as the University of Texas is always nice. Problem is, the Soviets placed similar arrays using unmanned rovers in 1970 and in 1973, and NASA could have done the same. So if you are trying to use this as proof that men walked on the moon, it's completely irrelevant, Mr IQ.

What does logic have to do with common sense? Not much, common sense is usually based on assumptions that are often correct. What does logic have to do with definitive proof? Everything.

To say that the existence of reflectors on the moon proves that men walked on the moon, while knowing similar reflectors have been placed by unmanned vehicles, is a logical fallacy. There may or may not be other proof that men walked on the moon, but the reflectors don't really qualify.

I ignore them because I've read it all. Everything. Name it.

I'm all for the truth. I choose to believe what I want. NOT what is "shown" to me or "Shoved" down my throat.

I simply look at what's presented. Use a very 'tiny' bit of logic (as this doesn't require much to begin with) and I made a choice.

Just because there are powers that be, I.E. "The Government" etc.. that can change, say, alter, frighten, coerce , and force people to do whatever they want doesn't mean we didn't land on the moon.

It simply means that we as individuals (Not a group sniveling , drooling cavemen) can think for ourselves and realize...

We're not that advanced.. yet.

Believe what you want. You think I care?

I bet you believe in God because you were "told" to.

I really hope you're kidding, but if you're not, it's dark in the background because it's "daytime" on the moon. the sun bleeds out the small points of light of stars and only shows itself, and the black absence of light because there's no atmosphere to cause the prism effect that gives us our normal sky colors... Even conspiracy theorists accept that there would be no stars shown on cameras unless they don't even bother using 8th grade physics in their explanations...

Its just another American bull (****) crap, long Lie to ppl, all they do is propaganda and lying.... i just wonder if they ever gonna stop?!?!

copy paste from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollo_Moon_L...spiracy_theorie

The flag placed on the surface by the astronauts flapped despite there being no wind on the Moon.[71] Sibrel said "The wind was probably caused by intense air-conditioning used to cool the astronauts in their lightened, uncirculated space suits. The cooling systems in the backpacks would have been removed to lighten the load not designed for Earth's six times heavier gravity, otherwise they might have fallen over".

* The astronauts were moving the flag into position. Without air drag, these movements caused the free corner of the flag to swing like a pendulum for some time. A horizontal rod, visible in many photographs, extended from the top of the flagpole to hold the flag out for proper display. The flag's rippled appearance was from folding during storage, and it could be mistaken for motion in a still photograph. The top support rod telescoped and the crew of Apollo 11 could not fully extend it. Later crews preferred to only partially extend the rod. Videotapes shows that when the flag stops after the astronauts let it go, it remains motionless. At one point the flag remains completely motionless for well over thirty minutes. (See inertia.) See the photographs below.

Cropped photo of Buzz Aldrin saluting the flag (note the fingers of Aldrin's right hand can be seen behind his helmet).

Cropped photo taken a few seconds later, Buzz Aldrin's hand is down, head turned toward the camera, the flag is unchanged.
Animation of the two photos, showing that the flag is not waving.

The flag is not waving, but is swinging as a pendulum after being touched by the astronauts. Here[72] is a three-minute video from Apollo 15 showing that the flag does not move except when the astronauts move it. Here[73] is a thirty-minute Apollo 11 video showing that the flag does not move.

There are no stars in any of the photos. The Apollo 11 astronauts also claimed in a press conference after the event to have not remembered seeing any of the stars.

* The sun was shining. Cameras were set for daylight exposure, and could not detect the faint points of light.[50], pp. 158–160Even the brightest stars are dim and difficult to see in the daytime on the Moon. Harrison Schmitt saw no stars from the Moon.[51] The astronauts' eyes were adapted to the brightly sunlit landscape around them so that they could not see the relatively faint stars. Camera settings can turn a well-lit background into ink-black when the foreground object is brightly lit, forcing the camera to increase shutter speed in order not to have the foreground light completely wash out the image. A demonstration of this effect is here.

But i guess you ppl already know this?!!?

I find it funny that people took a late-90's Fox TV special seriously

Reshot for 1080p. In 30 more years, they will shoot it again for 2160p.

haha, still blur as f***. Just admit it, it was all staged.
#57 Julius Caro on 18 Jul 2009 - 08:25
Even if it was all staged, I guess nobody doubts that we do have the technology to land on the friggin moon. We have people floating in space FFS. If it didnt happen then, it will happen at another time. I guess they'll do it when it stops being pointless going to the moon for nothing.

IS THERE ANY REAL VALUE IN GOING TO THE MOON AGAIN? I THINK NOT. GOING TO MARS SHOULD REMAIN THE FOCUS ALONG WITH BUILDING A NASA SPACE STATION TO SUPPORT IT. MAYBE A MOBILE SPACE STATION TO ORBIT MARS FOR LONG TERM SPACE TOURS.

Actually you're wrong. Moon would be perfect place to lunch future space missions cause you would need less fuel in order to leave Moons gravity.

funny how they have the technology to send people to the moon but not be able to store proper video footage

I believe Japanese satellite took HD images of lunar capsules and other things left on the Moon after Apollo missions. That should be end of this debate. It is possible that NASA edited original movies and added perhaps content not filmed on the Moon but who cares. It doesn't change the fact that we landed there 1969.

Btw If we are going to test future missions Moon is perfect place for such thing. I am sure NASA needs to take care of Radioation fact. Apollo missions were extremely lucky.
