Today Microsoft announced the availability of Office 2008 for Mac Service Pack 2. SP2 delivers highly requested features throughout the suite as well as a new tool, Document Connection, which helps improve access and browsing to documents on SharePoint and Office Live Workspace.

"There's never been a better time to try Office 2008 for Mac — with SP2 we are not only delivering on top customer requests midcycle, but also taking a first step in bringing Microsoft software plus services to Mac users," said Mike Tedesco, senior product manager for MacBU at Microsoft. "This connection unlocks the door for Mac users to Microsoft services for easier collaboration and file sharing with colleagues, customers and classmates."
What's new:

  • Custom Path Animation, adds the ability to author motion-patch animations. Users previously could only play back motion paths.
  • Default Theme lets users define their default theme, including fonts, color scheme, and slide layouts.
  • Increased launch and scroll speeds in Word and Excel 2008 for Mac
  • Ability to upload to Office Live Workspace.

The download will go live today at 10:00 A.M. PDT, and will be available to download here or via Microsoft AutoUpdate.

That has been present in every update and still the program feels like a snail.

What's your point? They are increasing the speed, isn't that a good thing? (snipped)

If sanctified took some time to check out the update he would realise there is a genuine speed improvement - but bashing Microsoft is so much cooler than eating humble pie.

Even if he hasn't tried it I would assume that the change would be minor, if any, as they've been listing performance increased for Office:Mac for years, and not once as there been any noticeable improvement.

There have been performance improvements listed for years - but they tend to be feature specific; having tried SP2 of Office 2008 for Mac, there is an overall performance increase.

I find it funny that there isn't the same degree of cynicism when it comes to Microsoft's other products - and the unmitigated disaster of that product I would rather not name.

If true then that's good news.

Go on. I'd love to know what product you'd consider to be an "unmitigated disaster".

The original page says "Microsoft releases Office 2008 for Mac SP2" as well but I'm thinking, should it not be "Microsoft releases Office 2008 SP2 for Mac".

P.S. I reported this on Back Page :, isn't that supposed to be mentioned?

The product is actually called "Office for Mac", so calling it "Office 2008 for Mac SP2" is technically correct, if not a little confusing.

No. You did not submit this to the front page. There is a link on the front page that says "Submit to News Desk." Copy-paste news in the BPN forum does not count as news submission.

I actually went back to Office 2004 for Mac, the 2008 version had a knack for crashing constantly when trying to run a spelling/grammar check (so bad that I would have to go through one rule or word at a time, saving the document, as it was possible that it'd crash a word or rule later). I hope that's a fix that was thrown into Office 2008 SP2, but I am too scared to try it, lol.

Never had that issue.

Sounds like your computer has issues rather than the software; interesting how you've never asked this in the Mac section of the website.

Maybe some day, if we all wish hard enough, the "real" Microsoft Office will make it to Mac (or even Linu.

a quick note to the installers...pirated versions of office stops working after installing this. it'll come up with a message that the product key is not valid. ...just a heads up.

I noticed that too. Thank goodness for Time Machine to restore the previous version!
#7 hagjohn on 20 Jul 2009 - 20:23
SP2 is a lot faster on my white macbook. Good job from what I've seen so far.

Office 2008 is teh snappy for me now
#9 .Neo on 20 Jul 2009 - 22:33
Too bad PowerPoint 2008 is still a complete joke compared to Keynote '09. It's like Microsoft decided in 1993 that graphically no improvements were needed anymore.
#10 chaos_disorder on 21 Jul 2009 - 01:44
I did notice some speed improvements, so that's a good thing. Now, if Microsoft would act like they care about putting out a quality mail app for the Mac instead of the godawful Entourage, things would be looking up.

I still find it fairly slow compare to PC version. So i will still call it slow even with those improvement.

What are you system specifications? PPC or Intel?
#11.2 .Neo on 21 Jul 2009 - 12:43
Same here, it's definitely slower than Microsoft Office 2007. Doubt it's a problem with my 2009 Mac Pro...
