Microsoft announced today that it has begun accepting application submissions to the Windows Marketplace for Mobile.

Todd Brix, Senior Director for Mobile Platform Services Product Management at Microsoft, confirmed that Microsoft is accepting submissions from registered developers. "We certify apps on a First In, First Out (FIFO) basis. Certification should normally take about 10 business days" said Brix in a company blog post.

Microsoft is aiming to provide developers with detailed reports explaining which test and why applications fail if they do not meet the process, policies and guidelines Microsoft has published. According to Brix "we want to create a global marketplace for Windows Phones where developers and users meet to sell and buy high quality and high value applications that make work easier and life more fulfilling. We're creating a clear process and new opportunity for developers and ISVs to make money from their investment in innovation. The applications we feature will be well organized, easily accessible by PC or phone and backed by a money back guarantee."

Microsoft is running a contest until December 31 2009 where winners who submit their apps have the chance of winning 4 Microsoft Surface tables (Developer Edition), online marketing & promotion of their app and challenge trophies for the mantle. Entries will be judged on most downloads of a free app, most valuable app (downloads x price), most useful (as judged by Microsoft panel) and most playful (as judged by Microsoft panel). Further details on the "Race to Market Challenge" contest are available at Mobilethisdeveloper.com.

What the hell am I supposed to do with a Microsoft Surface? What a stupid prize. Just give me a nice laptop.

I am interested though hope they make it as easy as the iPhone. Blackberry process is a load of rubbish, it is impossible to find out if your phone even supports apps, which is something quite basic you think they would have included in their documentation. Palm is ok, but it is still a huge PIA to developer for, a lot of standard web stuff just breaks.

I would love a Surface. It looks absolutely amazing! I wish I had an app in the works...

A laptop, so you want something everyone else has, that's not a prize, that's just stupid. Prizes should be something fancy and hard for the average developer, in this case, to get. So a surface fits perfectly with it's high cost at this time.

Besides it's a great thing to develop for since it's a forward looking piece of tech.

I would like something that I can use. Having a huge ridiculous surface would be of no use to me. Sure, I could show all my friends, and wow people, but that would get boring after a week or so. There is no point developing for it, since the market is so small, unless you think it is going to start taking off, and everybody is going to shell out $10,000 for a tv built into a table.

I'd love to submit my free apps, but I'm not paying £65 ($99).

Charge a buck for them. if it is anything like the iPhone, you will make your money back in the first week. Then you can set them free if you want. Or just keep making money.
