Nikon has revealed the world's first compact digital camera, which features an integrated projector, allowing users to share their pictures on any suitable flat surface, such as a wall or display. The 10-lumen projector can project images or video clips in VGA quality, up to 40 inches in size, up to two metres away.

The Coolpix S1000PJ has a 12.1 megapixel sensor, 5x optical zoom and comes with a remote control and stand, for times when gathering around the 2.7-inch LCD screen just will not do. And, if users do go for the slideshow option, the camera has some effects that can be added, making it possible to create slideshows quickly and easily.

The compact digital camera has several built in blur reduction features, subject tracking as well as other, smaller features such as the "Smile Timer". The Coolpix S1000PJ is one of three compact digital cameras in the new Coolpix range from Nikon, joining the Coolpix S640, which Nikon claims is the fastest of the Coolpix cameras, and the Coolpix S570, which focuses on design and ease of use.

"We are thrilled with our innovative new COOLPIX collection and, across the range, believe we have created a camera to suit everyone," said Mike Pekelharing of Nikon Europe. "Our projector gadgetry will be sure to impress, but ultimately, all of the range offers sophisticated features to produce Nikon-quality images and bolsters our already impressive collection."

According to TechRadar, the Nikon Coolpix S1000PJ will cost £399, when it is released in September.

Nice, anyone has a pic/video of the actual projection?

There's one here, but I don't know about the copyright, which is why I didn't post it.

ahh i like what they did there... it looks like a classic camera with a viewfinder, except when he turns the camera around and you see the LCD at the back you realize its a digital camera and thats not a viewfinder! its the actual lens... and the projector takes up the space where the lens traditionally sits...

Now that looks like a cool piece of kit, it means portable projectors are going to start flooding the market too sweet!!!!

i think that it would be cooler if the projector used the same optics as the camera, kind of like the mirror in the SLR but with a projector in the place of the eyepiece assembly

I'm curious about what they use as a light source, I hope LED for the durability.

Meh, VGA quality with 10 lumens? ANSI lumens?
Even 1000 lumens looks pretty crappy in a room with more than a little light, IMO.
Don't expect anything like a decent picture at more than about a foot away in a (very) dim room.

Sound pretty underwhelming.

Meh, just as slow as Vista with Direct X 10? 10 Gig hdd space?
Even XP is too slow, in a computer with less than 4 gig ram, IMO.
Don't expect anything like Linux or Mac OS on anything less than a Cray.

Yes, I know it took serious liberties, settle down everyone!

So, what, you're expecting a home theater-quality HD projector from a camera running off of two AA batteries? This isn't something you sit down and watch movies from.

Now does it behave like a projector when connected to the computer?

would be great if support some video formats, so we can use it as normal projector to project movies. maybe they should add some HDMI port in or something
