Twitter was hit with a Denial of Service (DoS) attack earlier today, causing the site to go down for about 2 hours.

Services were restored by 11:30 a.m. EST. A DoS attack is an attempt to make a computer resource unavailable to its intended users. This is typically accomplished by continuously requesting information from the a site, until the sites network resources become too congested or busy to serve pages.

CNN reports that although services have been restored, the attack is still on going, and Twitter is actively working to defend and recover from the incident.

Numerous disruptions to Twitter services have occurred, including the Twitter Facebook application and Tweetdeck, causing many users to be in the dark for tweets and other related services from Twitter.

Spotty reports indicate some users are still experiencing slowness or are unable to connect to the site. Twitter users complained they felt disconnected from the news of the day during the outage.

Another spokesperson from Twitter stated they will keep the public apprised of any additional news regarding the attack.

A special thanks to Neowin member maash for contributing to this report

I'm so annoyed that they fixed the problem... Someone please root the servers they use and use them to DoS their own site; fix a big problem with the world, hell, do it with failbook too.

I can't blame the script kiddies this time, this is pure win for us.
#4.1 starsky2 on 07 Aug 2009 - 02:45
tbh saying script kiddies launch attacks is like saying only adults have sex.

you're like in 1995 or something thinking that noobies are running these big botnets and using them to attack? There are big company sys admins and university professors who have botnets and this is PROOF and i've seen it myself. Ya there might be a few little teens getting fun out of having their small time botnet and scaring their friends or packeting the hell out of some e-thug but most of the big timers are well established people with a lot of "E-power" (lots of bots!)

Twitter users complained they felt disconnected from the news of the day while the site was off line.

Seriously, if this your source of "news of the day" then you need to rethink your life and your news sources.

couldn't of put it better myself

As if a DDoS attack puts a significant dent into Twitter's usual poor performance chart...
#7 static_geek on 06 Aug 2009 - 18:07
Believe it's hitting Gawker and Paypal too.......................

"Twitter users complained they felt disconnected from the news of the day while the site was off line."

Couldn't they just turn on CNN, FOX News, Local News or something.
#8.1 Ridlas on 06 Aug 2009 - 18:25
Or go on Neowin of course ^^

While I would like to agree, Neowin does not cover politics other than the forums, unless you are talking about the forums.

Twitter DDoS was a top story on CNN for awhile....
which is sad

You can follow CNN, FOX News (Who would want to anyway) and other news sites such as Neowin. Twitter has become like a News Feed from different sources. Care to take another stab at Twitter?

Is this is a bad thing?
#9.1 +Chicane-UK on 06 Aug 2009 - 18:47
Just because you don't use the site or care about it.. obviously lots of people do use Twitter and it matters to them!
#9.2 JonathanMarston on 06 Aug 2009 - 19:28
I still have yet to meet, in person, anyone that actually uses Twitter, and I work in the tech industry. I'm sure there are people out there that care, but it's not as big a deal as everyone makes it out to be.

i don't get WHY Twitter just got super popular pretty much out of no where it seems.

at least Facebook/MySpace has been around for a while.

p.s. i don't use ANY myself but if i had to choose Facebook or MySpace it would definitely be Facebook since it's more professional looking/less bloat etc.

Marketing and Media. Remember when all the famous people wanted to get a million followers... thats when it started taking off.

You're posting on a semi-hardcore tech site. What exactly are you then?
#11.2 Star_Hunter on 06 Aug 2009 - 20:01
I always find it funny when a nerd makes fun other other nerds because of their nerdy activities.
