Official theme support now integrated in Google Chrome 3.0

The latest developer build of Chrome now includes an official option to install themes into Google Chrome. It was reported earlier this week by Neowin that Google is preparing to launch a theme gallery. It looks like this has happened with the release of build 3.0.195.6.

The option is offered under "Personal Stuff" and has the option to "Get Themes". Pressing the button redirects you to a webpage, that shows a whole array of new themes for Chrome.

Applying the theme is as simple as pressing the "Apply Theme" button below the chosen theme, and a ".crx" file is downloaded. A restart of Chrome is not required to apply the theme. To get this option, Chrome 3.0.195.6 must be installed, and you must be in the "Developer" build channel.

The release of this feature to the developer build channel indicates that a lot of work has been done, but there is still a lot to come. It seems to be very efficient and stable, and may progress to the main public builds in the near future.

Google Chrome is Google's flagship browser, based upon the Web Kit rendering engine, and touts the most minimal interface, and fastest browser start times.

OR KEEP USING THE DEFAULT THEME.

Maybe that's what the user prefers.

Thing is though it's just that the interface for Chrome sucks and these themes are making it even worse.

Still nothing compared to the Windows 3.1 "Hot Dog" theme.

Damn, I forgot all about that one.
I wonder just how many used and actually liked it (except for the blind users out there)...

I can think of a s-ton of things Google should be focusing on adding to Chrome. Not a single one involves a seriously restrictive skinning system.

Pointless.

You realize this isn't about the themes available, but that you can now create your own themes. I know, it is all very complicated world we live in, and most people here would never think about changing away from the Microsoft theme, but for others, you can now do it. So choice is a good thing, understand?

Well.. i dont use chrome.. but you got to give them a break. Im guessing they are focusing on freelancers to develop proper themes for the browser, while they just provide a few samples on what could be done. AND this is just their first release, although.. even the GMAIL themes suck.. soooooooo.. who knows.. lol
#7.1 Thom on 07 Aug 2009 - 15:13
gotta agree with you.. don't like the themes but would assume(/hope) they're leaving this to the freelancers.

I don't even like any of the non-default firefox themes to be honest, though the new windows aero-esque ones do look nice
#8 M_Lyons10 on 07 Aug 2009 - 14:58
I wonder when 3.0 is going to see release. I'm curious what else is new. I always play around with Chrome, but I go back to Firefox. lol

Yet another example of non-OS level skinning that looks horrible. Didn't we learn from Trillian that custom UIs are always a disaster?

Yeah, I would have to agree with you there. However, I think that Chrome looks better in Vista and 7 than any other browser does using its default theme.

What the hell. 3.0 already and it still doesn't have basic options that all other browsers have?

What options that you consider basic is Chrome currently missing?

Custom font rendering would be a good start. I personally hate viewing the web in anything except Calibri and Segoe UI.

This explains why googles sites are so plain... they can't get real graphic designers! *lol* jk

If you want pretty, go to Apple. If you want usability, go to Google. If you want neither, go to Microsoft.

Wow, that wasn't fanboyish at all.

I love how people like you conveniently ignore the dominance that IE6 had when it first came out.

And how old is WindowBlinds now? I'm still waiting for some professional looking themes for that!
#14 nocture on 07 Aug 2009 - 16:17
I didn't check any news on the new Chrome version yet, is addons coming as well? If not, to hell with themes
#15 soaptray on 07 Aug 2009 - 16:36
It corrupted my profile within Chrome... I had to delete my profile to get the browser to work.

Not to mention, most of these are ugly as sin, and don't work with Windows 7 glass effects.
#16 Dudlington on 07 Aug 2009 - 16:38
FYI, I'm in the Beta channel not the developer channel according to the Chrome Channel Changer (chromechannel-2.0.exe) and I got the update today to 3.0.195.6, which includes the theme support.
#17 duntkno on 07 Aug 2009 - 17:19
i dont get why anyone would choose this over the glass effect. this looks too much like bloat.
#18 Iamit2900 on 07 Aug 2009 - 17:26
I don't mind the default theme but Google Favourites would be a really nice ad in.
#19 kevcampbell on 07 Aug 2009 - 17:53
top one looks nice

2nd theme looks alike a windows mobile 6.5 theme of Isaac Misrahi (Purple)
#20.1 LiquidSolstice on 08 Aug 2009 - 10:27
Which I'm pretty sure no one here has ever heard of :/.
#21 gonzolife on 07 Aug 2009 - 19:21
I've wanted themes since I installed Chrome but those screen shots look awful. I know it is just a developer build, so I am staying positive that when it is released it looks shiny.
(2 replies) #22 TonyLock on 07 Aug 2009 - 19:32
These are as lame as a duck. Not the metaphorical lame duck, either, but a real duck that was actually lame, maybe from stepping on a land mine or something.

Something tells me that duck would phlame up quite well if it waddled onto a land mine, metaphorical or otherwise.
#23 +shinji257 on 07 Aug 2009 - 20:08
I'm sure themes will be off by default when support is released but the capability will be there. Hopefully they will let the community create their own themes.
(2 replies) #24 Xenomorph on 07 Aug 2009 - 20:48
Don't worry - Themes now,

Adblock+ and NoScript later!

Right???

#24.1 Frankenchrist on 07 Aug 2009 - 21:03
there's already an adblock greasemonkey script (called adblock+) for chrome. It actually works! You have to enable extensions and greasemonkey in chrome tho. That's done by "chrome.exe ––enable-extensions --enable-greasemonkey"

Can't wait for extensions to appear. Chrome makes Firefox feel real sluggish...
#24.2 LiquidSolstice on 08 Aug 2009 - 10:26
I love how the most fanboyish Chrome users are always reluctant to admit they have very ****ty extension support, notably Adblock.
(1 reply) #25 +Anarkii on 08 Aug 2009 - 07:16
These themes are crap... I tried them all and ended up going back to default. LOL

Hopefully in the next few days, Chrome will release some good themes.
#25.1 asim0 on 08 Aug 2009 - 11:21
haha yeah ended up sticking with the default them too
(1 reply) #26 LiquidSolstice on 08 Aug 2009 - 10:25
Let's just make sure we know that these aren't "themes", rather they're this stupid new-age of so-called theming is really just idiot wannabes changing around colors in the spirit of HTML-style or changing the background.

You all act like this is groundbreaking news, when really, it's basically just Personas for Firefox.

Want more examples of this newage skinning bull****? Check out Deviantart, and look for winamp skins from the last few months are so. All of them are the same classic skin with a different background.

Skinning used to be about design overhauling, making new lines, changing the overall look. A real theme is best exemplified by the many Windows XP Visual styles out there. THOSE are real themes.

Not this crap.
#26.1 pasty2k2 on 08 Aug 2009 - 17:35
Agreed, you seldom see a "theme" for something that changes the way it looks very much, aside from colours/a huge GIF overlay :|

I gave it a try, but if you apply a theme and have more than 2 separate windows of chrome open (not just tabs), funny stuff happens. When I applied a theme, it worked. As soon as I went to change it again, back to the original (clicked the reset to original theme button), the other window steals my focus, Aero basic invokes and the close/max/min buttons get all screwy like there is a drawing problem. Similar to what happened when you tried to apply a theme to XP without a patched uxtheme.dll in place.

Of course, its a dev build, and its the first weve seen, so its gonna be buggy. I agree though, this is getting a little too common nowadays, lazy "theming".
#27 k7of9 on 09 Aug 2009 - 09:05
Instead of wasting time on theming (let the OS/Windowblinds/whatever take care of theming), Google should get their act together and focus on things that truly matter, like proper bookmark managing and extensions. Lots of people, including myself, will not seriously consider switching from Firefox before that is taken care of. I have never seen people ask for theme support. Ever.
What's the point of a single app theming system anyway? Do people actually like inconsistent UI's?
#28 smithy_dll on 09 Aug 2009 - 10:26
Version 3 already?
