Google testing their re-engineered search engine

With all the current shenanigans going on between Microsoft and Yahoo! (that being that the former has struck a deal with the latter in which Yahoo!'s search engine will be powered by Bing), the technology world seems to have forgotten about Google's plans to develop further. The company has certainly been mentioned a lot lately as a competitor, but nothing has been speculated about them improving their current offering. Now, however, according to Mashable, we've got a sudden announcement about the topic from the company itself. Google has been working on a re-engineered version of their search engine lately, and they've got a (public) developer test website to show for it.

Google said that, "For the last several months, a large team of Googlers has been working on a secret project: a next-generation architecture for Google's web search. It's the first step in a process that will let us push the envelope on size, indexing speed, accuracy, comprehensiveness and other dimensions. The new infrastructure sits 'under the hood' of Google's search engine, which means that most users won't notice a difference in search results. But web developers and power searchers might notice a few differences, so we're opening up a web developer preview to collect feedback." As you will hopefully have picked up, this isn't simply a few upgrades to the current search engine, but rather a whole new version of it.

So, are you keen to try this out for yourself? By all means, head over to the preview and give it a shot, and be sure to let us know what you think. We've given it a quick test ourselves by searching for Neowin on the old version of Google, and then on the new version. The results are certainly slightly different, but whether it's a change for the better is up to the user. Again, post a comment with any feedback.

I want to know what differences web developers could pick up, though...

I wondered that myself, lol.

It uses Ajax now, not just regular html post.

It feels noticeably faster...

Probably because it's running on a server with not nearly the load of their public one, but still... instant results.

0.1 seconds compared to 0.2 on average for me, doesn't make much of a difference really

That certainly is damn fast.

It's not the time displayed... maybe they optimized the code that's sent to the browser? Because everything appears instantly, not even a wait while the browser renders the page.

Not much of a difference?! That's twice the efficiency!

It uses Ajax to send the data, rather than reloading the page.

Ahh, thought that *might* be it, there wasn't that white flash for a refresh.

A welcome, albeit small, change.

More results in half the time. Not bad.
#3.1 pasty2k2 on 12 Aug 2009 - 05:26
Not sure how else you can really improve it with the current way the web works hehe!

Not that interesting. Google is constantly working on improvement to its search engine, since it is its major product. It may take Microsoft 7 years to release a new OS (XP-W7), and it just forget about projects (ie6, WinMo), that doesn't mean all companies can be so complacent.

o_O

But regardless, it is true, companies are always doing stuff behind the scenes, some of which may never even see the light of day.
#4.3 Rolith on 12 Aug 2009 - 04:33
yet google's not released major revisions to how it's search engine worked in YEARS... small tweaks yes, but this started "several months ago" when microsoft was looking at buying yahoo and bing was looking huge... i'm nto saying it's a bad thign, just might be that google is giving bing the benifit of the doubt and considering them a threat... that's AWESOME news for EVERYONE if google's acting competitive again.

I think you forgot Windows Vista there...

Microsoft dont just create a few web apps and buy a few other already-established businesses, their model is a lot different. Yes they buy other companies out and so on (they are notorious for this) but they do have a vast range of their own products that they have been constantly refining over the years. They may have had a bad patch from 2002-2005ish, but especially recently they have come leaps and bounds in my book.

Nothing against google, or MS or anyone, but you cant compare the two like that as they both work completely differently.

my site got bumped from #3 on pg 2 to #10 on pg 1 for my primary keyword phrase. taking into account that the total results are up by 30%. i'm down for that.
#5.1 WhoTheF on 12 Aug 2009 - 07:18
congrats.

A search for my name in the new version returns more variations of my name in the search results, which is good I guess, but it also ranked many of them higher than my name, which sucked.

Good to see some evolution, but it needs work yet.
#6.1 cakesy on 11 Aug 2009 - 23:26
If this i the only issue you have, then saying it still needs work is a little silly.

And at least it doesn't censor results like bing.
#6.2 Majesticmerc on 12 Aug 2009 - 06:38
My name is very uncommon though, in fact I know of only one namesame on the internet, yet Google thinks that variations of my entry are more important than what I actually entered, which is something I disagree with entirely.

maybe this will fix the issue with auto complete when you type i'm extremely and getting "terrified of chinese people" as a result

that's because of that 'christwire' site, it must have been doing some sort of search engine optimization to get that phrase into the suggestions box...

what still gets me is no matter what search engine I use, trying to find something like "how to" on something complex always takes me to a site where one of these are always present:

1. a page with 10,000 listed article links
2. something that has absolutely nothing to do with what I typed
3. a business that wants you to buy their solution (even though it can be coded ourselves). Or something listed as "free" only to not be.

Just take me to the freakin' page that has what I want!

I dunno, it did seem faster, but I wasn't really wowed... With all of the features Bing has, Google has to compete in that way a lot more...
#9.1 simon360 on 12 Aug 2009 - 01:30
They aren't focusing on features, as the article said it is a backend thing. I hope they do add some of the features Bing has, though... maybe this backend overhaul will add the infrastructure needed. Who knows.
#10 TonyLock on 12 Aug 2009 - 02:21
Google 2.0?
#11 :: Lyon :: on 12 Aug 2009 - 06:04

I see no difference.
#14 tuxplorer on 12 Aug 2009 - 07:55
I'm hating their new changed bright blue color (a step back from earlier dark one) in US search results and considering switching to Bing forever.

My guess is the end user will not see much benefit, but the google server farms will.

#21 +Echilon on 13 Aug 2009 - 18:30
I noticed twice as many hits for my name. Impressive, though I'm not sure they were all unique. Maybe they start repeating from result #1 half way though.
(1 reply) #22 shakey on 14 Aug 2009 - 00:05
Type in "why are" in the search. How many people are really searching for the 3rd option that appears???? lol
#22.1 carmatic on 16 Aug 2009 - 12:09
there's a good reason for that.... thats a title of a book

System Maintenance

Please try your search again in a few hours.

We are upgrading elements of our data center. The Caffeine sandbox should be available for searching again in a few hours.

LOL :'

I use Bing, way cooler to start your day with nice images and yes pretty good results!
#24 Glassed Silver on 16 Aug 2009 - 20:12
they could start making searching usable again...
quick example...
sometimes i'm receiving results of (random example, not sure whether this is real, just showing what principle i mean) "laptop" when searching for "laptops". i might INTEND to search for the plural... mh?

or "similar" words... argh...
sometimes i just get WAAAAY too many results and have to scan the links like heck...

sometimes i use "NOT [bla bla]" and i find that expression in some results... google tries to fool me every day, still it is the best search engine IMO ^^

Glassed Silver:win
