It's no secret that the Zune HD launch is getting closer. First there was Amazon taking pre-orders but now there appears to be official signage that clearly states that September 15 is the day that Microsoft will take on the market dominating iPod Touch. The previously leaked day of September 8 is expected to be the pre-order date.

Neowin recently posted a hands on review that showed off some of the features for the upcoming Zune HD. Microsoft has packed the Zune full of features and with its excellent Zune Pass subscription music service it may have a serious contender on its hands.

Expect Microsoft to hype up the launch extensively before September 15th as it will need to overcome the image that the Zune is no longer the laughing stock of the digital music player market.

The Zune isn't the laughing stock of the digital music player market. It may be to iPod/Apple fans or market investors not confident with Microsoft, but most reasonable people I've seen have seriously considered whether they should get an iPod (or whatever player) or if they should get a Zune. I think that's enough to show it's not really a laughing stock.

Anyway, $25 to 'reserve' a PMP? Heck, I wouldn't PAY to reserve any gadget. That's ludicrous. I hope that doesn't mean that there will be a limited amount of Zune HD's sold at launch, because the buzz around the Zune HD seems to have gone further than just tech sites.

Most preorders cost ALOT more....You are complaining about $25 and you are going to spend $200 plus something (minus $25) on a product?

Something wrong with your logic.

No, there will be an unlimited number available to buy on day 1. /sarcasm

Seriously mate, think before you speak.

The deposit is so you can reserve one of the initial stock. It's not like you'll be paying $25 more, you'll just be guaranteeing yourself a Zune HD on launch day at no extra cost.

This should put a rough range around the rollout of the Zune store etc on 360 as well. They pushed the main update yesterday, so we should expect to see at least the Zune components around the same time that the ZHD releases.

This won't take a huge chunk from the touch market. The iTouch is basically a iPhone without the offical phone feature.

Does this thing even support apps let alone have a camera?

BUT... It looks uber sexy, and I may end up getting the 32gb model. So w00t!
#4.1 ahhell on 12 Aug 2009 - 14:55
Why would this need a camera....its a media PLAYER.
#4.2 wakers01 on 12 Aug 2009 - 15:41
Yes it supporst apps, no it doesn't have a camera, and one might want a camera because it is a way to capture media.

You already have a camera phone. I don't need repetative features. I need new things, like HD Radio, 720p output, etc. Apple just keeps on selling the same old (Copy/paste, really???)

Repetitive features...?

But if you have an iPhone, you don't have an iPod Touch, so what's wrong if they put a camera into both...? XD

So instead of including common features like Copy/Paste in their latest firmware, they should have come up with another different feature. Yeah, makes sense.

Don't get me wrong, my friend. I am stoked about the HD and can't wait to lay hands on one. The HDMI out is one of the features I'm looking foward to the most. I was just saying that I can see why someone might want a camera on a media player.
#5 The Real Alex on 12 Aug 2009 - 13:43
I hope i have enough money by then for i can get a 32GB model.

480x272 thast an odd resolution, but guess those res's are getting more common... I guess since it is OLED it will look good though, low res on LCD sometimes looks odd
#6.1 artzm on 12 Aug 2009 - 17:23
It's a 16:9 wide screen resolution.
#6.2 PsykX on 12 Aug 2009 - 20:58
In that case, it would be 480x270. This 2 pixels difference is indeed very odd.

I thought by "HD", they meant it had a resolution of like 1280x720 or 480x854. Or well, I thought the resolution would at least beat the one on the iPod Touch and iPhone...
#6.3 Xero on 12 Aug 2009 - 22:30
OLED will make a better picture regardless of the rest, and I'm guessing the HD part is regarding output. I need an Dock to HDMI connector mm.

Cant wait to pre-order! I'm pumped!!! I'm assuming this will be going on at Best Buy?

Rumours have it that the 16GB will be $220, and the 32GB will be $290. This is still unconfirmed. However, I don't think this is the retail price.
#8.1 dbam987 on 12 Aug 2009 - 15:06
The iPod Touch goes for about $230 for just the 8GB model, $300 for the 16GB, and $400 for the 32GB. I say Microsoft will definitely be pleasing people by shaving a good $100 off of the higher spec'd versions. I think though that these rumored prices are a bit high these days, and that it'll be a bit less. My random guess? 16GB for $175, 32GB for $240.

So do I have to actually buy the dock or can I purchase an el cheapo mini-HDMI to HDMI cable?
#9.1 andrewbares on 12 Aug 2009 - 15:51
Idk about that yet. Right now, I'd say you need the new Zune HD dock.
#9.2 artzm on 12 Aug 2009 - 17:24
Dock because it isn't mini-HDMI.
#10 Killa Aaron on 12 Aug 2009 - 15:35
ohh yeah the 15th is my birthday too it's only one problem i can't part ways with my jail-broken iPod Touch 2G but i want this too

I guess this could be information about the dock.
"A new Zune HD Dock will be released this September for use with the high definition output of the touchscreen Zune. The digital signal will produce a video resolution of 720p on a HDTV. Previous dock kits of this kind have sold for around $79 including remote. The Zune HD Dock could sell for even more and offer Zune HDMI connectivity while working to also charge and control the device.

A full Zune HD dock review will be ready on launch day along with a video tutorial on how to properly install and setup the Zune HD dock accessory."

ZUNEDOCK

That thing looks fugly.
#11.2 ahhell on 12 Aug 2009 - 17:59
It's a dock....it's not supposed to be a piece of art.

Apps please. Show me where MS is promising apps.
#12.1 a1ien on 12 Aug 2009 - 17:15
Don't worry, you will be able to install software! (snipped) There's plenty of rumors to that effect I'm sure it will be revealed.

This thing has an nVidia designed GPU so logic suggests that there will be some killer 3D games too for this, killer compared to the PSP.

They have said multiple times that they have nothing to announce at this time involving apps except that they are in the pipeline. I don't expect them right away but most likely before the end of the year. From what I have heard they will be releasing a lot of new stuff after launch.

Brian Seitz also said that there would be games at launch and more later.

September 15th? Why not earlier, like the 8th? Oh well, at least it is coming.

Btw, do the current Zunes come with firmware on them? Or do they need the Zune software to download and install it on first connect? I'm saying this because in the cnet review video podcast, the guy from the Zune team says they didn't do benchmarks because everything isn't done yet, and they still have work to do. I'm sure the hardware is complete, but I don't think the firmware is. With the Zune HD coming out next month, how can they finish the firmware for the Zune HD and then box the devices up so quickly? Are they at the moment boxing up Zune HDs and continuing work on the Zune HD's firmware until the release date has arrived so they post the final firmware on the Zune software?

Dearest Zune will you be coming to Australia now?
#14.1 +Xerxes on 13 Aug 2009 - 02:49
All the articles I've read focus on the US launch and there is little to no info on exactly where or when it releases internationally. All I do know is Australia is getting it, just dunno when...if you cannot wait, you can always just import it from the US.

Loving the interface, it's pretty slick and smooth.

I was hoping for 32GB black version.
#16 ninboy59 on 13 Aug 2009 - 04:26
Is MS going to cripple it by only allowing "licensed" peripherals to connect and enable line out through the dock connector? Don't get me wrong, I LOVE both of my Zunes, but not having the ability to connect it to a car stereo or dock radio like the iPod is the main reason I didn't buy one new. Microsoft shot themselves in the foot by doing this on BOTH first and second generations.
#17 M_Lyons10 on 13 Aug 2009 - 08:45
Cool. I can't wait to see it. I hope I'll be able to play around with one. It looks great! I hope there will be Zune's on display that aren't just in cases...

#20 LiquidSolstice on 13 Aug 2009 - 18:43
Dunno what they're smoking, Sept 8th/15th.

I fully pre-paid for mine on Amazon just a few minutes ago.
