Neowin's top 10 Firefox Add-ons you can't live without

Advertisement (Why?)
Neowin and its members have compiled a list of their favourite Firefox add-ons they can't live without. The list was compiled out of the top 10 add-ons members have installed.

#10 IE Tab: Even when users still use Firefox, they can't go without their beloved Internet Explorer. This add-ons allows users to view web pages right inside Firefox as if they were using Internet Explorer, or link externally to IE itself, creating a quick shortcut to opening the current page or highlighted link in Internet Explorer.
Get this add-on

#9 Glasser: This add-ons allows users to customize their browser with a transperant Windows Aero look by making the Firefox toolbars turn transperant. This add-on does require Windows Vista or Windows 7 to properly make use of Aero.
Get this add-on

#8 British English Dictionary: Spelling mistakes are far too common on forum posts, so this quick add-ons spell checks as you type preventing you from making typos and errors while posting on the Internet. The Dictionary underlines your errors for better visibility and even showing the correct spelling of the word when right clicking on the error. This add-on will work on any web page form field or text box.
Get this add-on

#7 Hide Menubar: If you're looking to get a better view of a web site without all those useless toolbars at the top of your browser, this add-on will hide your main menu toolbar at the top, giving you that extra bit of web space. Holding Alt will make the main menu reappear.
Get this add-on

#6 Tabs Open Relative: Such a very basic annoyance to some Firefox users is opening up a new tab, where the newly created tab will open after the very last tab, regardless to what tab you are currently on. This add-on opens up the new tab right beside your current tab, even if your browsing on the first tab and have multiple tabs open, your newly created tab will appear beside your active tab.
Get this add-on

#5 Xmarks: If bookmarks are your forte, Xmarks allows for bookmark backup and syncing across multiple computers and multiple browsers including Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari (Mac OS). This smart add-on also allows for password sync, preventing others from browsing through your bookmarks.
Get this add-on

#4 Greasemonkey: Greasemonkey script lets users customize visited web sites by adding in their own javascript to adjust the way the web page is viewed. Users can use hundreds of scripts found on the Internet allowing for endless possibilities of customization. This add-on is mostly for experienced users who are familiar with javascript.
Get this add-on

#3 Download Status Bar: This add-on allows users to view active downloads right inside their browser without an external popup window. Information about each download will be displayed across the bottom of the browser window with a progress bar and detailed information about remaining time and file name. This add-on also comes equipped with loads of extra options for ultimate customization. A must get add-on.
Get this add-on

#2 Stylish: If web site customization is what you're into, this add-on is perfect for you. Users can customize the look of any web site by adding in your own CSS across web sites and the browser itself. With a gallery of user ready scripts found on the Internet, it is easy to customize boring and ugly web sites with a few clicks. A must get add-on.
Get this add-on

#1 Adblock Plus: The top rated add-on by Neowin is of course, Adblock Plus. The name says it all, blocking virtually every single ad online preventing those horrendous advertisements from getting in your way. This add-on allows for users to block some images, all images flash elements and even text advertisements. This add-on has built in filter updates to keep up to date on latest advertisement blocking techniques, and also comes with an option to disable adblock on certain web sites, like Neowin.net. A must get add-on.

I'm really surprised that #1 in this list is 'Adblock Plus' considering Neobond's and other Administrators/Mods views on that specific add-on..
#1.1 Andrew Lyle on 16 Aug 2009 - 22:35
Were not going to sensor the results because neowin doesn't like adblockers, we just ask you whitelist the web site, the ads are inline with the design and really aren't annoying

The starship Enterprise has sensors, I think you mean censor

Edit: Rather than making a new post, I'll add to this one:
The top and side ads are tolerable. However the Intellitxt ads as well as the huge stonking ad in the middle of the page are ultra-intrusive and intolerable, no matter what you say Mr Lyle. Thats just my opinion on them. Just wish I could pay to remove them rather than having to block them, I don't begrudge Neowin some money, it's one of my most read sites.

I wouldn't say that really I've seen posts removed in the forum for discussing or recommending Adblock previously when Neowin had not even been mentioned. I don't have a problem with the policy itself just like some consistency.

And I don't mind the ads on Neowin.

I tried adblock once and didnt notice the difference in most websites. My mind does a good job at blocking ads, it seems.

I thought it was the clicking of the ads that made money?
#1.5 DomZ on 16 Aug 2009 - 23:11
Coming from someone who's used adblock plus for probably 2 years or so, I've recently been using Chrome and I haven't really noticed that many ads, although I have noticed neowins - although they are perfectly tolerable now. The most annoying ads are ones that flash or move, or them ones that hijack keywords in comments/articles...

The bloody ads which highlight certain words in articles sure is annoying.
#1.7 Kushan on 17 Aug 2009 - 00:05
I also agree with all the hate of the intellitext ads. In all honesty, they're what is stopping me from whitelisting the whole site.

I've seen comments deleted and posts censored too because of the whole adblock thing. I thought it was just clicks that generated revenue. And randomly clicking ads just to 'support' the website is just fraud. So what are we supposed to do? I've been mentally blocking ads since.. 1997!

I *believe* it's a mix of the two, obviously it takes a lot of views to get the same revenue as a click, but we get a lot of views/day, so it works out.

I've looked for that in the usual subscription places, but I can't find it. Perhaps it's because I'm already a level 1 subscriber? Do I have to wait for this one to expire before I can buy level 2? Also I must have missed the announcement about this new subscription level, because the first I heard about it was when I saw a different subscriber badge next to somebody's name.
#1.18 Andrew Lyle on 17 Aug 2009 - 12:58
You can look in the subscriber forum for help on how to upgrade to tier2, you just need to PM Redmak, but look inside that forum for help

I like your attitude. I have now whitelisted neowin.net in adblock plus As long as the ads aren't too invasive and flashy, then I'm fine. I have left flashblock enabled though because I hate flash ads; they hog cpu power and sometimes crash the browser.

I'm using one called "All-Glass Firefox mod, based on Glasser" which is at version 2.1.2. This IS compatible with FF3.5. I've also got the Firefox 3.7 Mockup Redux theme installed, the end result being a really nice looking browser in Windows 7

I wont post a screenshot here in the news comments, because thats just so annoying isn't it? If anyone wants a look, clicky here:

Neowin has a user who created an all glass Firefox mod already.
#2.5 +Ned on 17 Aug 2009 - 00:07
Since all glass requires glasser in order to work(it's heavily based on it). It would be safe to assume that glasser works with 3.5 perfectly?
I'm using it right now without any problems.

Maybe, maybe not. If you know a little bit about html, it can remove some annoying ads, and make it easier to extract information from a page. A really useful tool, I don't just use it for web development/testing.
#3.3 mocax on 17 Aug 2009 - 01:29
firebug's the only add-on that justifies keeping firefox on my quicklaunch list

the latest version is a little buggy though...

I'd like to add to that list linkification, auto pager, nightly tester tools, searchbar autosizer, compact menu, check4change, and add to search bar.

Add to that Locationbar2 (that 2 is in superscript), it linkifies your address bar to make it easy to go back to the root domain, or any folder within it. Also highlights the domain name. Check out my screenshot in comment #2.1 to see it in action.

Adblock is the only one I use there. Glasser doesn't really strike me as a must-have.

Downthemall.

Probably one of the most useful imo

Indeed, especially compared to glasser and the menubar hiding thing.

my thoughts exactly.
#7 Cellar Dweller on 16 Aug 2009 - 22:48
Well there are two that are not listed that I find should be in the top 5 or easily the top 3. The two not listed are FireFTP which is sweet if you do a lot of ftp'ing like I do to web site and ftp locations etc. The other being Weather Enhanced, you can set it for the 5 day forecast, it has a radar you set to your liking, and you pick it for your city and it's just part of the bottom bar and does not intrude on the screen what so ever, unless you want to see the radar image.
#8 artfuldodga on 16 Aug 2009 - 22:53
adblock plus
betterprivacy
check4change
cslite
noscript
refcontrol
greasemonkey

my own list
#9 chadlachlanross on 16 Aug 2009 - 22:54
Well, only #10, #5 and #1 are in my 'must have' list.

I'd add FireFTP.
#10 Jugalator on 16 Aug 2009 - 23:04
Most underestimated addon ever?

Lazarus Form Recovery.

Any time you've entered text, and the browser has went down for any reason (user mistake, power outage, browser crash), and you've lost the text you entered, you needed this. Forms like this very text area I'm typing in now, your blog posts, practically anything is saved without user intervention. It's a well thought out addon too, supporting passworded and encrypted forms to recover, so not just any user borrowing your computer will be able to see what you have typed a day before. The time information is saved is also configurable.
#11 Pupik on 16 Aug 2009 - 23:05
I don't agree with the title. I can live without nine of these extensions, just fine.
This is what I can't "live" without upon new Firefox installation:
AdBlock Plus
NoScript
FEBE
FireGestures
FlashGot

Can I be the first to say I definitely couldn't live without:

1. Tab Mix Plus
2. QuickDrag

Being able to drag links and they'll go into a new tab is a must - i'm lost without that on other's computers. And Tab Mix Plus' undo tab... and tab history. Gorgeous.
#14 +warwagon on 16 Aug 2009 - 23:09
mine would be

Flashgot

flash block
Yespopup
adblockplus
roboform

#16.1 LoveThePenguin on 17 Aug 2009 - 23:45
Adblock Plus should also be built-in, or at the very least shipped with the installer.
#17 +dead.cell on 16 Aug 2009 - 23:40

Great way to keep your images sorted properly.

#19 iaTa on 16 Aug 2009 - 23:45
WebMail Notifier

NoSquint

FoxyProxy
Context Search
Add to Search Bar

Glasser is such a poor addition to the list. Firefox is always available for OS X and various Linux distributions, which don't need Glasser because it actually fits the operating system better than it does on Windows.
#22.1 LoveThePenguin on 17 Aug 2009 - 23:41
True. Firefox integrates perfectly with Ubuntu as it uses the GTK toolkit. I think the problem lies with windows itself, because of a lack of interface uniformity. Few applications look alike in windows.

I like how you don't read the article. The list isn't "his", it's a compilation from many Neowin members.
#25 ThaCrip on 17 Aug 2009 - 01:01
1.Adblock Plus (this is pretty much 'standard' i think for just about everyone using Firefox. )
2.TabScroller (this don't officially work on v3.5 yet but you can make it work anyways... this basically makes it (once setup right) so that you can hold down the right click on the mouse and use the mouse wheel to instantly scroll through tabs that are open. this is MUCH more efficient vs manually clicking the tabs. the only drawback to this is if you don't typically have many tabs open, then this extension is fairly useless but since i have a lot of tabs open in Firefox on any given day this is a 'must have' for me... but anyone who typically switches between tabs in Firefox fairly often this is pretty much is pretty much a MUST HAVE, especially once you get used to it like i have, it's almost 2nd nature to use the rightclick/mouse scroll for me to switch tabs as i don't even really think of manually clicking the tab anymore like everyone else usually does.)

3.(optional) NoScript (extra security as it's nice to have but the sad part of this, and the primary reason i cant really recommended it for the average joe, is that most average joe users dont want to spend time configuring crap when using a webbrowser as they just want to go to there website and be done with it.... so that's the major turn off of this extension. but for those people who don't mind some easy configuring then i would recommend this)

that's pretty much the only 3 extensions i use myself.

1, 3, 5 and 10 make my list. The others, eh.

Every time I've installed Greasemonkey, my browsing goes in the basket. It seems that I may be installing it too late, and I'm in need of a reinstallation at that point. So I've decided I'm just hexed by it. :-p

Adblock Plus
Bug-me-not
Cookie Swap
Ctrl Tab
Greasemonkey

Erm no it doesn't. #7 just removes te File, Edit, View, etc menu bar. F11 removes that, but also removes the Status bar, the address bar, the tab bar and pretty much all other bars leaving just the web page itself. It also makes the browser full screen and covers your windows taskbar. Pretty big difference.
#35 tuxplorer on 17 Aug 2009 - 04:02
The only reason I don't primarily use Firefox is the slightly over-sensitive drap and drop functionality in the awesome bar/URL/address/location bar. Any way to completely disable drag and drop in this URL box. And it seems other browsers are getting "infected" with this annoyance too, Chrome and Safari 4 (but not 3). IE doesn't have it.

2) Yesscript(better than noscript)

After I install NoScript, I check off "Globally Allow Scripts". That switches NoScript from a whitelist system to a blacklist system, which makes it a lot more useful in my opinion.

Unless I'm missing something, YesScript simply duplicate's NoScript's Blacklist mode. NoScript should make it more apparent that they even have a Blacklist mode (and aren't Whitelist only).

If I'm wrong about YesScript being a blacklist extension identical to NoScript's blacklist mode, please tell me the real differences!!

It would be nice to see a article on add-ons for IE8. It would only be fair IMO

The lack of a decent adblock add-on for IE8 is one of only a handful of things that IE8 lacks that prevents me from using it full time. All the current adblock add-ons I've tried are buggy or just don't work very well.

I barely notice ads on any site. And if it bothers you that much, do you watch TV? Hell even video games now come with ads in them...

Whether or not you notice ads is not germane to the discussion. Also, with the popularity of DVR boxes, watching advirtisements is no longer required. It's also possible to avoid games with ads in them.

Your opinion is immaterial. Fairness has nothing to do with writing an article for IE8. Fairness would require a write-up for every browser ever so that they all get equal coverage.

I'm surprised that most of the add-ons posted are to change how fire-fox looks, no relation with enhanced browsing experience.
#39 pinTero on 17 Aug 2009 - 06:40
Duplicate Tab and AutoCopy are must have for me..
#40 +what on 17 Aug 2009 - 07:33
I'm quite surprised NoScript isn't on there. I thought that was the de facto for keeping Firefox more secure.
And while Styish is quite neat, I think most people would be able to live without it in
#41 coth on 17 Aug 2009 - 07:48
with no order
adblock plus
fxif (to view exif from shots)

wow, you guys are missing out if you don't include these into your list:

downloadhelper - easily download any media files from any site, such as youtube.
customizegoogle - adds ridiculous amount of options to google sites.
urlbarext - adds useful tools to help you handle URLs, such as making tinyURLs with a single click.
firegestures - best mouse gestures for FF
tab mix plus - adds more options to control your tabs.

some personal favs:
woot watcher - monitors woot.com for new items
uppity - move up directory in an URL.
pict uploader - quick image uploader to the web, great for posting screenshots.
#42.1 +TCLN Ryster on 17 Aug 2009 - 11:26
mayamaniac said,

Instead of uppity, try Locationbar2. It does the same thing by allowing you to easily go up a directory, but does much more. Such as highlighting the domain in a URL, and making each level of a URL into a separate link that you can click on.

Anyone that needs 10 addons to surf the net, shouldn't be using the internet anyway!

Cripe,
Those addons simply mentioned in post right above mine sound about rediculously useless and stupid!!

In Seamonkey and K-Meleon (don't and won't use Firefo all I use is adblockplus and flashblock.

It's hard to take seriously the opinion of

1. Someone who does not use the browser in the article.
2. Someone with horrible spelling.
3. Someone that is obviously closed-minded and unwilling to take into consideration the opinions of others.

You might consider all this before posting again, as it makes you look like a very ignorant person. Take this as constructive criticism and please alter your actions accordingly.

My Add-ons are:

1) Adblock Plus
2) Cooliris (Great way to view a bunch of images from various sites especially Google Image Search)
3) Shareaholic (Great Social Bookmarking App, Since there is still a lot of sites that don't have the "Share This Icon"

Neowin and its members have compiled a list of their favourite Firefox add-ons they can't live without. The list was compiled out of the top 10 add-ons members have installed.

When / Where exactly was this compiled? I didn't have a clue about this census.
#46.1 Andrew Lyle on 17 Aug 2009 - 13:00
Look at the bottom of the article, it has a link to the topic.
I took everybodies add on they used, put it into a list and ordered them by number of votes for each

I noticed that. Didn't made exactly my point. Lyle, if you're going to make a census, at least have the consideration to announce it on the frontpage or took over the "Stay up to date with all of our Windows 7 news right here!". That's what is made during census. They're announced and everyone is aware to participate.
#47 Xenomorph on 17 Aug 2009 - 13:58
That's weird. Firefox has a built-in dictionary, but this person lists a dictionary as a must-have, but doesn't list NoScript at all.

My picks:

Adblock Plus
Adblock Plus Element Helper
NoScript
Glasser w/ 3.5 mod
some CSS fixes in userChrome.
#48 Magallanes on 17 Aug 2009 - 13:58
Adblock plus
Forecastfox (now 6ºC , tomorrow will rain).
Autopager (yay!
Firebug and webdeveloper.
#49 +techbeck on 17 Aug 2009 - 14:01
I am using....

Ad Block Plus
Tab Mix Plus
IE TAB
Download Manager

Most of the top 10 Neowin posted are not useful....IMO.
#50 Quikboy on 17 Aug 2009 - 14:16
Can we have a top 10 for all major browsers? Or did I miss those posts?
#51 jordanthegreat on 17 Aug 2009 - 14:18
#7 Hide Menubar - Isn't this exactly what the F11 key does in firefox? That seems like a pointless addon.
#52 kellykufeldt on 17 Aug 2009 - 15:58
I just use Maxthon browser. It is coded for Firefox and Internet Explorer and has most of those built in!!!
#53 WAR-DOG on 17 Aug 2009 - 16:22

Adblock Plus really is the best enchantment to a web browsing experience ever made. It saves bandwidth, removes google adds, removes flashy adds, removes in movie adds, removes "Hello!!!! Click Me!!!!" adds, removes scrolly adds, removes retarded adds, removes porn adds, removes any crud that might have came from them, (with EasyPrivacy) removes trackers and things like that, etc. And you can disable it on places that don't suck, like neowin.

I would recommend SkipScreen for those that download a lot of files from sites like rapidshare.

For plugins I would recommend Foxit.
#55.1 JDonner on 17 Aug 2009 - 20:58
Yeah, let's all get rid of all ads in the whole world. t never crossed your mind what kind of negative effect that has...duh! We might no like ads, but often they are a good thing for us indirectly.
#56 toadeater on 17 Aug 2009 - 20:50
I can live without most of those.
#57 JDonner on 17 Aug 2009 - 20:55
"and also comes with an option to disable adblock on certain web sites, like Neowin.net"

Nope, that's the only site I'm going to block.

Can I ask why do so many of you use AdBlock? I think if you are visiting a site you should pay your respects and view the ads just like everyone else. Am I wrong?

How about a couple of links that I accidently ran uppon that opens so many popup ads that you wold need to end task your browser

Respect has nothing to do with being bombarded with images, links, and pop-up windows that were not requested by the user. The user should only see the contend he/she deems appropriate, and the site owner should take this into consideration before placing such crap on their site. If they don't want to pay out of pocket for their site's costs, then they shouldn't run a site. Period.

I agree with other posters I never install Firefox without installing Ad-Block, No Script and IE Tab immediately so I am surprised the No Script wasn't in the top 10. And I am not sure why: British English Dictionary is #8 or even on the top 10 since Firefox already spell checks.
