Apple's iPhone takes the place as the top camera on flickr

Apple's iPhone may not be the best quality photo-taking device on the planet, but it sure is handy; it's possible to upload photos to flickr just by sending the image to a certain email address, and otherwise, you can even use Apple's own iPhoto software to do the trick. Perhaps it's the convenience, or perhaps it's the amount of iPhones that have been sold so far, but either way, the iPhone now has the spot of top camera on flickr, a website dedicated to storing and sharing photos.

The stats count all three of the iPhone models that have been released to date, though it's still quite impressive; it overtook the Canon Rebel XTi to take number one, although it has had the number two spot for quite some time. It appears that it was the launch of the 3GS that pushed it to the top, though apparently, this isn't actually the first time it's made it there. At one point earlier, the iPhone did have the top spot, but then that seemed to have disappeared altogether after a few hours. Flickr spokeswoman Lucy Chung said to the LA Times, "The graph in Camera Finder updates at every moment so there's no specific reasoning behind the changes. One can assume though that with the recent iPhone 3GS launch, the iPhone now includes two models whereas other manufacturers separate out their models, which could explain the inflated numbers."

The iPhone does have a rather unfair advantage when compared to other cellphones, however; as mentioned, all three models count as one statistic, and all other cellphone models are their own entities. Additionally, some people seem to be rather unimpressed with this news. As said here on Twitter, flickr has always been a great place for quality over quantity... with the iPhone taking the top spot, it seems that this has been degraded somewhat. Yes, there's still a vast amount of great photos and great cameras there, but Apple's device is still at number one.

If you own an iPhone, do you use it to upload images to flickr?

Update: It seems that the sudden jump in iPhone users has again decreased, as it did previously, leaving Apple's device in the second spot once more.

If they didn't bundle all models of the iPhone together (or bundled all Canon EOS Rebel models together), then that would be a completely different story.

EDIT: Actually, the iPhone isn't top. http://www.flickr.com/cameras/

Yup, it doesn't seem to be on top anymore, although it could have been when the article was written. It's real tight up there. But I also think it's kind of a poor comparison to compare full-fledged cameras with camera phones. We're talking some quite different demographies. Check out the camera phone comparison though.

Look it is just a simple comparison, it doesn't mean anything beyond that. You are like those people complaining that Firefox has been downloaded a billion times, trying to dilute those figures.

Yes, it doesn't mean that all camera produces are going to shut up shop. It is a fun statistic. And just dream, that maybe one day Microsoft will get a device in the top 1000, then we will be hearing about it for years.

i don't even use Flickr, i use Zooomr, perhaps i'll migrate to Flickr when/if that service dies, though Twitpic is looking like a nice photosharing alternative, one would assume it will stick around

and yeah, seems OPs article is already inaccurate lol thats what happens when you jump on a story just because you're in love with your own device

lol, is that so? I thought it was rather because it's notable that a camera phone, any camera phone, would be taking the top spot.

it is logical that the an iphone would overtake a actual camera like the canon listed and others listed, not everyone is a 'professional' photographer and shutterbug that would require such a camera

that said, Flickr was meant as a top quality photo sharing service so entries like the iphone have degraded the service over time like OP mentions

Flickr seems to be heading that direction over quality photographs for the past while, going the way of photobucket and others

also, with the ease of sharing Twitter users, among other social sites have helped with this influx of iphone photos on Flickr, more of a service migration than anything else

Hehe, but I think the iPhone will regain its top spot soon. See the iPhone trend vs the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi trend. The Canon only regained its top spot due to a slight upwards trend to break the earlier one, but I don't think it'll last long. Because the XSi down there is its successor. It'll likely eat its market share successively.

flickr - quality over quantity? LMAO. I don't think that has EVER been the the case.

Not for me especially. I dump all my photos there. I rarely edit them, and only bulk tag when it's easy to do so.

So flickr now has a bunch of images of low quality on there huh? I dont know about anyone else, but cell cameras are not close to the same quality as stand alone cameras. I do all my pic taking with my stand alone camera and dont use my cell much at all.

Have you seen photos taken with the iPhone 3GS? http://www.fosfor.com/i09/08/090803_3a.jpg (3GS at top, 3G bottom.)

Duh, when you shrink the picture like that, of course crappy cameras will seem just as good .

Heck if we compare pictures of 1x1 pixels we can even claim iPhone camera is as good as the best DSLR. But those tricks are nothing when you have to face the reality.

+1

For example, you don't want to use a crappy 2 megapixel picture as a wallpaper.

Actually with a good eye and a 3Gs, it's possible to get some pretty good pictures.

Lots of people only care about the picture, not so much the quality. And having a camera handy, and ready to take photos in a second is a huge boon. It is funny watching someone with there SLR, trying to get it out of the case, fumbling around, missing the moment.

Wow. I didn't know any of these sites even tracked that stuff. Very interesting.

I've been surprised at the good quality of pics from my iphone that I've posted to Flickr. FlickIt makes this pretty easy.
