Apple store robbed in 31 seconds

Apple stores are known for their clean, modern, and user friendly layouts. What is also now known is that these stores can be picked clean by robbers in under 31 seconds. At the Sagemore, New Jersey Apple Store, a brick, 5 people and 31 seconds later 23 MacBook Pros, 14 iPhones, and 9 iPods were stolen while the security guard was away.

The video, attached below, shows how the thieves managed to ransack the store; it's amazing that Apple does not even use standard laptop locks to hold down their laptops. Apple does use a type of Ethernet cable that when unhooked produces a loud audible alarm.

The store is staffed by a security guard but clever timing and knowing Apple's security procedures allowed the thieves to get in and out before the guard had a chance at stopping them.

The thieves made the entire operation look very easy and may start a string of Apple store robberies. Don't be surprised though if Apple does change its policy in the near future to require laptop locks and other enhanced security measures.

That news channel is a complete joke, the way they sensationalise such a trivial story. Everything has to be the most important and exciting thing ever. I can't believe people still watch this rubbish.

It's funny how they go on about their "precision" and how they're "pro's". Yeah it takes a real pro to throw a brick through a window.

Tim Dawg said,

No, the precision part was how they were able to grab almost every display device and leave before the security guard even got back.
#1.5 Silverskull on 04 Sep 2009 - 05:25
Although I agree, they did make too big of a deal about how they broke the window.
#1.6 buletov on 14 Sep 2009 - 10:52
These are ordinary crooks, not pros. A pro would start collecting items at the end of the store and progress towards the exit. Additionally, he could close the displays and disconnect the cables while going to the end of the store so that he doesn't damage the goods like these guys most likely did (grabbing a laptop's display that hard probably damaged some them).

I never noticed the merchandise was never locked down onto the tables at the Apple store... strange.

They are locked at my local Apple Store. I guess it depends on the location.
#2.2 Electric Jolt on 03 Sep 2009 - 21:18
They have an alarm at my store also. One time, it went off while a genius was handling the macbook, was accident.

I think so too, is just too suspicious that we went to take a dump and came back right after they left.
also, i think they didn't wear gloves, they touched the stands so they can search for fingerprints

Unfortunately the chances that 1 of the 5 has a record is very high I'd guess.
#4.4 Xero on 03 Sep 2009 - 15:22
Agreed. They obviously knew what they were doing, hence not a first time. Likely one of them has a criminal record of some sort. But I doubt it'll amount to anything. Apple will probably try and downplay it.
#4.5 roadwarrior on 03 Sep 2009 - 15:34
Its not just criminals who have fingerprints on record. Military, bank employees, and many other types of jobs require your fingerprints.

Except for that there were probably thousands of other prints there as well.

What the hell has this got to do with Apple, what do they have to try and downplay? Do they have to make an apology because there store was robbed?
#4.11 Gladiatorus on 04 Sep 2009 - 19:13
I also think the guard was involved. The timing was too perfect. And it was obviously very well planed and somehow rehearsed, they knew the store, where the devices were and how many of them in each stand.

The Find My iPhone is not going to work because these iphones has not been used before. Which mean they are brand new.
#6.2 bmaher on 03 Sep 2009 - 13:40
Actually, he has a point. They are the display iPhones, not boxed ones (they're locked far away), so they may have mobileme on them.
#6.3 +dead.cell on 03 Sep 2009 - 13:45
Exactly. They don't sell you what's on display, as that stuff is only there for you to get hands on with the stuff. Seems these guys just couldn't let go though, lol.

Maybe Apple could still find them if the phones are ever turned on? I mean... its not like you have to have the phone in front of you to install the "Find my iPhone" feature. Its all done remotely. If Apple knows what serial numbers were stolen they could probably figure it out I would imagine.
#6.5 Cask1 on 03 Sep 2009 - 16:17
To Turn the find my iPhone feature on you have to turn on a switch on the iPhone. However, I am sure iPhone could have other ways of finding the phones, absolutely.

Apple might already have this feature enabled, you know, in case they get stolen.

Have you ever been to a store where they are showing off a product, and it is not already on. These phones are already ON, what it needs is for them to switch them all off.

I know, what a joke. They are trying to make out that these are some master criminals, just come back from robbing the crown jewels from the tower of london. maybe not as useless as your average criminal, but you could already tell that because they hit a mac store and not a dell shop.
#14.3 Minimoose on 04 Sep 2009 - 08:28
Cakesy, you seriously need to stop the worship, it's getting annoying. They hit the mac store because it was so easy to break into and they new that there wasn't any security on the electronics

I would have to agree that the way they reported it was stupid.

Yeah, but this is Apple we're talking about. Form over function. Tempered glass might not have been 'pretty' enough.

In Spain (even at the little 'apple stores' inside other retail stores) those things are locked. You can't even move the iPod dock. They superglued the sh*t out of it.
#19 gianpan on 03 Sep 2009 - 14:05
macbook pro 2.93ghz 8GB RAM! Buy it now price 800$!

lol, anyway they will have to sell them (I doubt they are willing to keep them all). Do these display iphone's need activation through iTunes? Can't apple check the serial number and get their mobile phone and then their details? (it's apple they probably won't have legal problems to stall them)

Great point, becuase we all know it is impossible to get the power adapters separate. I know of no (ebay) place that actually (ebay) sells them to you real cheap (ebay), and especially one (ebay) that delivers to your (ebay) door.

It took them some whooping 31 seconds to rob the store while Mac OS can be hacked in less than 10.

#27 simon360 on 03 Sep 2009 - 14:35
I'm really surprised the guard didn't come out sooner. My friend accidentally pulled a cord off a laptop in an Apple Store in Toronto's Eaton Centre, and the siren was deafening... even as he ran away from the store in fear (this is a *busy* mall in the heart of downtown Toronto). But what they need are Kensington locks, especially since each Apple laptop ships with one.
#28 blehbleh on 03 Sep 2009 - 14:36
No kensington locks?
Sure, a proper bolt clipper can cut those like nothing but it would have taken them at least a minute extra to cut 21 locks - enough for the guard to finish his dump, he came just seconds after they left. (even though i don't think he could have done anything vs 4 guys )

how cheap was the glass in the store's front? it seemed to smash easily... at our local malls any store that has glass panels MUST withstand a large impact and not shatter... and the glass is like 3/4 inch thick safety glass... which when hit with something doesnt shatter but crack and stay in place...

Significantly, the theives avoided completely the new MacBook Wheel computers.
What do they think at these stores? That since their operating systems are "secure" that no one can steal the physical machines?

Like Shadow-XIII said, maybe if they weren't all like 2.5 ounces, the thieves wouldn't have gotten away with so many so quickly.

lol you do know the macbook wheel is fake lol

Think they've got the MAC addresses on file somewhere? Apple contacts all the big ISPs and pretty soon they've got some of their gear back and some of those dudes in jail.

That was amazing. That security guard is fired, lol.

What really amazes me is that, all the true negative stories never show up on mac forums, macnn, macrumours, and stuff like that.
#65 perochan on 04 Sep 2009 - 00:57
they must had gone to a lot of apple stores and found the one with least security and dumbass security guard.
#66 freeza on 04 Sep 2009 - 00:58
Good lord that is AWESOME.
#67 Gabe3 on 04 Sep 2009 - 01:05
that place was just asking to be robbed, security guard away, big glass doors, no security locks on the laptops. easy money for the thieves. you'd expect apple to be a little smarter.

the thieves did that precise and with speed, even if the security guard was there, they don't always scare thieves away, 5 guys vs. 1. that security guard got lucky.

wtf.

this has to be a HOAX or a joke. security guard walks out...and it happens right after? and when they leave, he walks back in? right.

Wow.. every store in Australia has security shutters at night then safety glass along with everything packed away into locked cages. The same as most our electronic stores.. you'ld never find a shop you can do a smash and grab on.

LOL

Now if they had had locks on all the items they would not have done it in 31sec lol...

But i guess doing that attacks the look of the overall store...

Guess they learned now hehehehe

What would of been really great is if that first dude actually face planted and his 4 buddies tripped over him and all face planted as well.

Macs are safe now. Not accessible to dirty and annoying appstore visitors ^^

Wow!!

Can't believe they didn't have them locked down!! How stupid. Like asking for someone to try and rip them off.

Not just the front door, the entire store was pretty much lacking any security - just like Windows firewall

No tight security? Typical Apple...
#78 AdamLC on 05 Sep 2009 - 09:56
They called them pros and criminal masterminds. Makes me laugh tbh. Its not like its rocket science to smash the glass, wear a mask and take everything

Oh, please. Facebook makes people jealous as much as owning a gun makes you a homicidal maniac.

People make people jealous. Just like people shoot people. The gun (Facebook) is just the tool of choice.
