Apple has announced the release of iPhone and iPod Touch firmware 3.1, available for download later today. The free download, for both iPhone and iPod Touch 3.0 users, is said to improve battery life.

The 3.1 firmware will improve video editing on the iPhone 3GS, that won't overwrite the original clip when editing videos, preventing the loss of the original film. The new developer API's allows third-party applications access to the videos and edit them, without having to use Apple's editing tools for the iPhone 3GS. The update is said to increase the boot time of devices. The device will now vibrate when moving icons around to different locations.

Apple also included a "Fraud Protection" toggle switch for browsing, now available under the settings for Safari. The firmware update allows Voice Control over Bluetooth now. Users can also organize their icons through iTunes without having to move them around on their device.

AT&T users will get an update to profile 4.2, but many users will still need to wait till September 25 before using their MMS feature. Apple also updated their modem firmware to 5.08.01. The update also has improvements to OpenGL and Quartz.

The 3.1 iPhone and iPod Touch firmware is available for download with iTunes 9.

Kind of disappointed that they didn't do the same thing to the ipod touch that they did to the nano : The new prices/internals are nice though.

Also fairly disappointed that this 3.1 update is $4.95
#5.1 MistaT40 on 09 Sep 2009 - 18:32
Well u know - there's always other ways to get 3.1 - I'll say no more.
#5.2 Donenzone on 09 Sep 2009 - 18:38
I wonder whether 3.0.1 ever will be released. I mean, 3.0 is slow and buggy as hell.

3.1 could help as well. I'm still trying to download it. It's so slow.

That's the thing I hate about Apple. They always charge for updates. I feel that they are charging people for fixing the mistake that they made or not intended in previous releases.

Upgrading to 3.0 isn't free, but from 3.0 -> 3.1 is free.

Thanks for the clarification. So the complaint was about paying for the 3.0 update then? Well, that's a major version, so I can understand a charge. If it were 3.0 to 3.1 that would be a bit outrageous.
#6 Phemo on 09 Sep 2009 - 18:39
Pretty useless update for me really, it doesn't add a single feature I'd personally use. I'm in no rush to upgrade my jailbroken 3GS from 3.0, though I may as well hold out for this to be jailbroken purely for the SMS exploit fix instead of bothering with 3.0.1.

I only get 3.1 with my iPhone 3G.

AT&T users will get an update to profile 4.2, but many users will still need to wait till September 25..

Does that mean that the feature could work with AT&T, but in certain areas the feature isn't available yet? Has anyone tried sending an MMS message?
(2 replies) #9 PsykX on 09 Sep 2009 - 19:06
Meh. They included FM Radio on the nano, but not on the classic, nor the iPod Touch? At least now they're thinking about it, well they're starting to think about it. And at least they have this innovative feature called "Live Pause" (innovative as in, nothing special, but others don't have it). But come on, this should be in all those iPod models + iPhone.

Also, no camera in the new iPod Touch? So the rumours were true... they DID have a problem with these and they needed to cancel it at the last second...

Any word on if iTunes 9 is Cocoa or still the same old platform?

Well, I'm just going to install iPhone OS 3.1 on my iPhone and iTunes 9. It's not like I needed an iPod, but I'm deceived to those who did need one. Also, no iMac update, damn! (yeah right, an iMac update when it's an iPod event )
#9.1 cakesy on 10 Sep 2009 - 06:38
That doesn't make the rumours true, bit of a logic leap there.

#9.2 PsykX on 11 Sep 2009 - 00:51
Well they had pictures of an iPod Touch with a camera and even a video of it. I don't think anything could be tricked there.

Got a couple of questions:
1) Does it add AVRCP support, i.e. rewind/ forward control on a bluetoth headset?
2) Does it break the tehtering hack?

I'm sorry if I am reading the info incorrectly but wasn't iPhone 3.1 b3 "5.11" modem firmware? In the article it says "Apple also updated their modem firmware to 5.08.01. ". ?? Any insight on this would be great.

Modem firmware has nothing to do with MMS, its the carrier version that does. Also AT&T already said that MMS will be available via another carrier update via iTunes on September 25th. Its only a few more weeks away...

Hm... Perhaps AT&T still wasn't quite ready? I don't understand the issue really, but I hope this is the end of it and they get that feature out there. I'm kind of getting sick of hearing about such a common feature missing from a major consumer device to be honest...

I understand that the modem firmware has nothing to do with MMS. I was just stating what mine showed after update because it was stated that we would have something different. As far as MMS goes, I was answering someone else's question. LOL Just now waiting for the 25th....

iPhone is one amazing piece of technology and yet still I cant turn my phone volume down without also turning the alarm down as well. Seriously how long do we have to wait until this is sorted out?
#14.1 ]SK[ on 09 Sep 2009 - 23:01
Yep. I too have a daily routine of turning it to silent and volume down to minimum when I hit the sack. Hearing that alert alarm sound at full volume is enough to give anyone a heart attack first thing in the morning.

How do you backup all your applications from the iPod to iTunes, so you can restore them after the update? My iPod touch is jailbroken and as such I will have to do a wipe upgrade
#15.1 dtomilson on 09 Sep 2009 - 22:30
Right-click your iphone in the left-pane and select "Transfer Purchases".

This is from with-in iTunes mind you.
#15.2 Frank Fontaine on 10 Sep 2009 - 01:50
Thanks, got them backed up now

Downloading the updates now.

But seriously, it took Apple that long to include an FM transmitter and only on the Nano? That's a literal facepalm right there!
#17.1 cakesy on 10 Sep 2009 - 06:40
Not that many people care about it. I don't, and it hasn't stopped the millions of people out there. Having an FM receiver didn't help the zune any, so not really sure what your point is.
#17.2 neo158 on 10 Sep 2009 - 16:35
Don't forget that the Zune has the ability to tag songs on the radio for purchase on the marketplace, the new nano doesn't.

Hey, that is pretty good. Where does the zune get the information from? Or is this for digital radio only?

#19.1 cakesy on 10 Sep 2009 - 06:41
People like to talk rubbish in this forum. However, it is $5 if you are on an OS
(3 replies) #20 Frank Fontaine on 10 Sep 2009 - 01:51
There is only a charge if you go from a pre 3.0 firmware revision.

Also, I got the 3.1.1 straight away, anyone know why 3.1 was released swiftly followed by 3.1.1?
#20.1 Andrew Lyle on 10 Sep 2009 - 02:09
You are using the iPod touch. I'm sure they released a bug fix for the 3.1. Only the iPod touch has 3.1.1 firmware now

For the millionth time, Apple doesn't charge for updates. You only pay for new OS versions, just like with Windows and Mac OS.

Just curious as to why it's allowed to discuss or mention jailbreaking iphones but not using illegal keys for Windows?
Any ops want to explain this to me?

I dont know but I have a feeling that to jailbreak you have to actually buy the iPhone?
#22 Zyxel112 on 10 Sep 2009 - 07:58
so disappointed

wishlist:
crossfading
visualizations
change springboards background
ability to delete songs directly from ipod if manual sync
fully unlocked BLUETOOTH..that can transfer to another device
an option to change the Qwerty keyboard to the traditional ones
new ringtones
...

#23.1 Zinomian on 11 Sep 2009 - 15:02
Yeah, the help.benm.at site needs an update to make this work again, if it is even is allowed to work...Might be the case that apple closed the backdoor that was left open and used by benm.at.

Lets wait a few days and hope its fixed.

Hi guys, beware if you upgrade your iPhone or iPod Touch and iTunes. in iTunes 9, the "smat playlists" feature is severely broken.

Take a look at the official Apple discussion board, threads are multiplying about the issue.
#24.1 PsykX on 11 Sep 2009 - 00:54
I should have replied to you then. You cannot be more right, my playlists are ALL broken because all of them are smart playlists.
#25 PsykX on 11 Sep 2009 - 00:53
Wow, it broke my intelligent playlists on my iPhone. They're fine in iTunes.

Good job... (I'm never mad about Apple, except in September I've had nothing but back luck with them... nothing serious but little bit of annoying things like these)
