Apple has announced the release of iPhone and iPod Touch firmware 3.1, available for download later today. The free download, for both iPhone and iPod Touch 3.0 users, is said to improve battery life. The 3.1 firmware will improve video editing on the iPhone 3GS, that won't overwrite the original clip when editing videos, preventing the loss of the original film. The new developer API's allows third-party applications access to the videos and edit them, without having to use Apple's editing tools for the iPhone 3GS. The update is said to increase the boot time of devices. The device will now vibrate when moving icons around to different locations.
Apple also included a "Fraud Protection" toggle switch for browsing, now available under the settings for Safari. The firmware update allows Voice Control over Bluetooth now. Users can also organize their icons through iTunes without having to move them around on their device.

AT&T users will get an update to profile 4.2, but many users will still need to wait till September 25 before using their MMS feature. Apple also updated their modem firmware to 5.08.01. The update also has improvements to OpenGL and Quartz.
The 3.1 iPhone and iPod Touch firmware is available for download with iTunes 9.

Also fairly disappointed that this 3.1 update is $4.95
3.1 could help as well. I'm still trying to download it. It's so slow.
That's the thing I hate about Apple. They always charge for updates. I feel that they are charging people for fixing the mistake that they made or not intended in previous releases.
Yes but that one costs 5 dollars.
Also fairly disappointed that this 3.1 update is $4.95
WHAT'?!!! 5 dollars you better be kidding me. There's nothing on it!!! Where's that ipsw when you need it?
yay!!

I thought it was supposed to be free...
How odd...

Upgrading to 3.0 isn't free, but from 3.0 -> 3.1 is free.

Thanks for the clarification. So the complaint was about paying for the 3.0 update then? Well, that's a major version, so I can understand a charge. If it were 3.0 to 3.1 that would be a bit outrageous.
WTH?Downloading it now...
3.1 version had 257,8MB and this one is 264,9 MB

What do the release notes say?
I only get 3.1 with my iPhone 3G.
Does that mean that the feature could work with AT&T, but in certain areas the feature isn't available yet? Has anyone tried sending an MMS message?
Also, no camera in the new iPod Touch? So the rumours were true... they DID have a problem with these and they needed to cancel it at the last second...
Any word on if iTunes 9 is Cocoa or still the same old platform?
Well, I'm just going to install iPhone OS 3.1 on my iPhone and iTunes 9. It's not like I needed an iPod, but I'm deceived to those who did need one. Also, no iMac update, damn! (yeah right, an iMac update when it's an iPod event
1) Does it add AVRCP support, i.e. rewind/ forward control on a bluetoth headset?
2) Does it break the tehtering hack?
Oh jeez... I had hoped this would finally be available for those that need it... It's a stupid feature to not have built into the iPhone... I hope you just missed it in there somewhere... :|
Modem firmware has nothing to do with MMS, its the carrier version that does. Also AT&T already said that MMS will be available via another carrier update via iTunes on September 25th. Its only a few more weeks away...
Hm... Perhaps AT&T still wasn't quite ready? I don't understand the issue really, but I hope this is the end of it and they get that feature out there. I'm kind of getting sick of hearing about such a common feature missing from a major consumer device to be honest...
I understand that the modem firmware has nothing to do with MMS. I was just stating what mine showed after update because it was stated that we would have something different. As far as MMS goes, I was answering someone else's question. LOL Just now waiting for the 25th....

This is from with-in iTunes mind you.
But seriously, it took Apple that long to include an FM transmitter and only on the Nano? That's a literal facepalm right there!
Hey, that is pretty good. Where does the zune get the information from? Or is this for digital radio only?
and no modem firmware has nothing to do with MMS.. MMS is software related on the iphone end..
Also, I got the 3.1.1 straight away, anyone know why 3.1 was released swiftly followed by 3.1.1?
For the millionth time, Apple doesn't charge for updates. You only pay for new OS versions, just like with Windows and Mac OS.
Any ops want to explain this to me?
wishlist:
crossfading
visualizations
change springboards background
ability to delete songs directly from ipod if manual sync
fully unlocked BLUETOOTH..that can transfer to another device
an option to change the Qwerty keyboard to the traditional ones
new ringtones
...
Lets wait a few days and hope its fixed.

Take a look at the official Apple discussion board, threads are multiplying about the issue.
Good job... (I'm never mad about Apple, except in September I've had nothing but back luck with them... nothing serious but little bit of annoying things like these)
