Last week Neowin.net reported that Bing 2.0 was coming and would be powered by Silverlight. Microsoft has now unveiled its next version of their decision engine, Bing Visual Search. The new Visual Search, powered by Silverlight, lets users scroll through galleries of images using specific keywords.

Users can browse in the visual search by products, sports, consumer electronics, famous people, entertainment, reference and many more categories. The updated search makes it easier for users to find what they are looking for through the stylish 3D flip image layout.

Bing now helps users sort through their choices by "Most popular on Bing", eliminating choices for you to help decide on what to buy. The decision engine can now help expand your search by taking your queries and turning out wider results. Bing will take queries such as "NFL Players" or "MLB Players" and locate as many results of player's images by face. Bing can also help narrow down user's queries by sorting players by position, team, salaries and more.

Bing Visual Search requires Microsoft Silverlight to be installed to use the newest version of Bing.

not for me!

Let's try that again

That web page doesn't exist. Let's see if we can help you find what you are looking for.
Tips

* Check that the web address that you entered doesn't contain a typo.
* Use the search box instead of the address bar to find what you're looking for.
* Find more search tips in Help.

My guess is you don't have Silverlight installed. Works in FF for me, not in Chrome
#1.2 +Odom on 14 Sep 2009 - 19:13
I get the same, in both Firefox and IE8, even though I have Silverlight installed.
#1.3 +DonC on 14 Sep 2009 - 19:24
I got the same. I just went to www.bing.com and changed to United States and it works fine.

Aye, do this.

UK user too, that's how I got to see it.

Remember that Bing has not finished rollout across all regions.

The EU has Not yet approved the Bing VisualSearch for use in Europe.

Has to be.. if not.. the EU should just stop using software, the internet and having anything dealing with products that were built in the United States!

link don't work
#2.1 Calum on 14 Sep 2009 - 18:47
It works for me. Maybe the Bing team just haven't rolled it out to all markets yet?
#2.2 Andrew Lyle on 14 Sep 2009 - 18:53
It is hit or miss with people I sent the link to. They said it either works or doesn't, so it isn't area specific, just keep refreshing until you get it

Pretty cool

Not sure what this is supposed to do? The images need to be added manually, so it is never going to be large. Is it just supposed to show of what silverlight can do?

change location to US
#8 darkmanx21 on 14 Sep 2009 - 18:58
Man, the album view is amazing! Try adding the filters on the side. This is actually a fairly interesting way of searching..wow. Try the US States, NBA Players.. and apply the filters. I like how they are content relevant. Lol at the FBI's Most Wanted list.

Looks cool but I don't see the benefits of using only silverlight on the image search, why not use it in the entire Bing site?
#10.1 cakesy on 14 Sep 2009 - 21:54
Because loads of people wont install silverlight, it doesn't have the market that flash has. Maybe they could make a flash version as well (ha ha ha). I would like to check this out, but won't be installing silverlight.

If MS is trying to increase the Silverlight user base by making it a requirement for their brand spanking new search engine, then I suspect the end result is that neither is going to grow.

As for your Flash suggestion...I'd rather install Silverlight than Flash. Microsoft is taking security way more seriously than Flash. Flash is the (way more) mature product, yet how many Silverlight vulnerabilities have made the news in comparison?

Sad its still not working on 64bit browsers!
#12.1 Andrew Lyle on 14 Sep 2009 - 20:04
Go to www.bing.com and change your region to "United States". Reload bing.com again and click on one of the promo images
#12.2 GreyWolfSC on 14 Sep 2009 - 22:39
There is no 64-bit Silverlight plugin so the browser wouldn't be able to display the content.
#13 DanManIt on 14 Sep 2009 - 19:47
This looks beautiful, but I honestly don't see it being any more efficient than a regular search. In fact, I think it is considerably less efficient...sure is pretty though
#14 BIG_FREAK on 14 Sep 2009 - 19:48
Make sure your default search location is US.

Then it will work

Doesn't work on Opera either. Running Linux. Useless...

try updating to version 3
#15.2 GreyWolfSC on 14 Sep 2009 - 22:40
You're way behind on Silverlight. I have 3.0.40818.0
#15.3 Lechio on 14 Sep 2009 - 22:50
I understand, it's 1.x I have. It's the only version that seems to be available for Linux, if I'm not mistaken...

I think you're right, although Moonlight might be more recent.

looks pretty pointless to me

Its horrible, bloated and lacks obvious features. For one, the image table should update as you type letters of your search query.

If it lacks features, how is it bloated, LOL?

Let me define "bloated" for you: OpenOffice.org is so bloated, that it sinks in mud.

Something can be bloated, and lack features. Or are you saying that OpenOffice has too many features?

Here, let me help you:
office 97 wasn't bloated, office 2007 is bloated.
Win 2k wasn't bloated, Visted was bloated.

No doubt I will once again be accused of being a troll, because I like some MS products, and not others.

I'm able to access Visual Search in the UK.

Try this, hope it works for you.
#21.1 Jugalator on 15 Sep 2009 - 09:17
I can click on e.g. "Dog breeds" there, but then it just tells me that it can't display the results for my search. Yes, "can't". Huh. I have Silverlight installed, FWIW.
#22 TRC on 14 Sep 2009 - 21:38
I don't really like it. Having a bunch of tiny pictures crammed together like that makes it harder to pick out what you're looking for than the regular image search.

If Only I had that when I was taking Honors Chem last year. That is AMAZING.

This seems really good to have a visual educational presentation. I might just e-mail the link to my sister who is teaching elementary school. I found the US Politician and presidents search especially cool.

Also, did anybody find it ironic that they included the top iPhone apps? Looks like Microsoft is becoming much more open.

No, this one is better:
http://www.webelements.com/

It has structure, doesn't need Silverlight, and provides far, far, better information on the elements without having to pass through yet a step in a web search to reach info on the element you were looking for. In short, you'll navigate in the element information much faster there than on Bing.

My point is that search engines are useful for some things, but sometimes dedicated pages are much better, especially for structured information. Bing tries to structure data, but an algorithm is often no match for a webmaster with a dedicated site.

it's a cool way to look at a topic visually, like the Nascar drivers for example, i like the layout and organization even thought it's a long way to go about a query-helps those of us who might need the visual help. Don't get me wrong though, this is NOT a compelling feature and u know google is going to roll out their own version at some time that will kick bing's effort

I personally don't see how this will make it gain market share... It looks good and all, but what is the use? The front page lists a completely random page of categories. A jumbled mix of everything between periodic table elements to celebrities, to guarantee the user will be confused and overwhelmed. And after clicking at one of those, you're led to something that seems to not work much better than Google Image Search. Flash is also better supported in other platforms than Windows, so it's sad to see MS trying to push this technology, just because it's theirs, not because it's best supported. Not that a search engine should use a plugin in the first place.

I agree on some of your points. First off, a search engine probably shouldn't require a plugin to operate. Has anyone gone to this site without Silverlight installed? I didn't see any comments about that and didn't really want to go through an uninstall / reinstall... It does look nice, but I don't think it adds anything all that important to Bing. I think Bing is a great search engine without this, and can't imagine ever having a need for this (Although going through cell phones was kind of cool).

Sorry Micro$oft, but 'Visual Search' isn't quite the Google killer you were hoping for.
