Windows 7 tip: Recycle Bin on your Windows 7 Taskbar

I'm not exactly sure when it became cool to abandon the use of your operating system's desktop, but a growing number of people these days prefer the "clean" look. Recent releases of Microsoft Windows seem to encourage this. By default, Windows Vista and 7 strip the desktop of all icons but the Recycle Bin.

Try as you may, ignoring this lone icon is impossible. Sure, you can hide it in just a few seconds, but at the cost of losing quick access to deleted files. You could also drag the Recycle Bin icon to the taskbar, but then it will appear pinned under Windows Explorer -- requiring an extra click to open and offering half the functionality.

In this tip, we will show you one method of bringing a fully functional Recycle Bin to your Windows 7 Taskbar, so you can clear off your desktop once and for all with little to no compromise.

I'd rather have in on my desktop.

Then this probably isn't for you, then.

Everybody I have ever seen, uses their desktop for storing loads of documents, aps, etc. So that it is a real mess. It is just the easiest way for many people to access what they want.

The thing is that taskbar is for most used apps, and i dont see myself or any other person using recycle often.
If its an attempt to clean desktop i'll understand, but then why have it at all? Just for nice pic?

The point of having the recycle bin on the taskbar is not purely for keeping your desktop tidy, but also for making the recycle bin viewable and more importantly usable even when you have windows open covering your desktop. I've had countless times when I've had several applications open and I just wanted to drag a file or two from a file-open or file-save dialog into the bin. As it happens I used the right-click context menu, but sometimes it just nice to drag and drop, and thats where this helps.

Also, an entire desktop for just a single lone icon seems like a waste. I'd rather just abandon the desktop altogether and us it for displaying wallpaper.
#1.4 CactuzJak on 16 Sep 2009 - 00:13
why would you drag and drop or use the context menu, why would you not just press delete on the keyboard, quickest and easiest to delete things... period

My desktop is solid black and has been like this since 95/NT4. Why waste resources on a wallpaper, when my desktop is always covered with windows (and since it's always covered with windows, there's no point in having icons on my desktop either). My icons (or shortcuts to them) are all on my taskbar, which is always visible. Easy access to everything, no matter what obstructs the desktop itself.

As for the recycle bin, I've been trained to hit Shift-Del, so it's of no use to me.

I just remove the recycle bin from my desktop. If I ever need to empty it I just navigate there via the address bar in Explorer. I do wish there were a slightly better but not obtrusive entrypoint. My taskbar is pretty full of apps these days, so I don't want to waste any space there (at least on my laptop where space is more scarce).

i don't think i'll ever use this coz my desktop is always clean... i like to keep my desktop as clean as Apple dock so i can access my most used app without taking time to find it... but this is a cool new feature tho...
#2.1 +statm1 on 15 Sep 2009 - 07:37
Well its not really a new feature.. Its just the same old quicklaunch bar that has been there for years.. Its just turned off in Win7 by default.

Sweet, neat tip!

This is nice, but when you select "Large Icons" it makes my taskbar taller by a couple pixels so everything is higher than normal.
#4.1 +jim2006193 on 15 Sep 2009 - 07:14
Yeah, I didn't like that.

Yeah I didn't like how it looked so I deleted the toolbar. Good idea but they should probably polish that bit soon.

And that makes the new taskbar even more like a dock. Maybe in the next release Microsoft will make the taskbar bigger, include the trash by default, and call it the Windows Shelf®.
#5.1 roadwarrior on 15 Sep 2009 - 10:44
Naa, they'd probably call it the Windows Sill.

Windows pane®.
#5.5 +Brandon Live on 18 Sep 2009 - 23:51
We could just call it a "wharf" like the dock's predecessor Or go back to its original / unofficial name, the tray.

You can actually pin such useful icons to Windows 7 Taskbar to easily and quickly access them:

#6.2 +Vishal Gupta on 15 Sep 2009 - 15:40
^^ You can also add it to My Computer window:

Quick access but loses functionality...
#7 badblood on 15 Sep 2009 - 07:47
Something to try this morning I think.
#8 TRC on 15 Sep 2009 - 08:00
It looks nice, though the Recycle Bin is one of the first things I disable and remove so it doesn't help me much.

It doesn't have to do with "cool" for me, but being able to find what I need. Earlier, I thought that was done *by* placing it on the desktop, but nowadays, I think the indexed search in the start menu is far faster. I often just need to type two or three letters to find what I need, and that's faster than even moving the mouse to point at the proper location on the desktop. A hundred targets just a Ctrl+Esc and 2-3 letters away. And as for hierarchies, well, as soon as you move to those, you *definitely* don't need the desktop anymore.

So now I personally disable the desktop icons altogether (right-click on the desktop -> view -> uncheck show desktop icons)

I too prefer a clean desktop, and I dont like to clutter my taskbar too lest of all with a recycle bin.

I instead prefer to show the Recycle Bin in the Computer folder.
#10.1 asim0 on 15 Sep 2009 - 09:15
thanks for that
#11 prime2515102 on 15 Sep 2009 - 08:32
This is nothing new. I've been doing this with XP for years.
#12 ThomMcK on 15 Sep 2009 - 09:01
Why use the Quick Launch? You can just create an empty folder and select that as the toolbar.
I'm loving the look of the Zune 4.0 toolbar in Win7 looks great.
As for the recycle bin, I think I'll pass. I rarely use it as I always hit shift+delete to get rid of stuff permanently.
#13 cerealfreak on 15 Sep 2009 - 09:14
Whilst I use the quick launch function, I prefer to have icon's on my desktop, I get freaked if my icons are not where they should be (yes I have computer OCD) You should see what happens when I have to fix someone else's computer

Until they broke some of the functionality, not mention the few issues I've had on 2 computers running it. I finally got the nerve to uninstall it off of both computers after the couple months of using it. Maybe one of the features they ripped out is going into the "pro" version of it...

Anybody still using the Recycle Bin ?
#15.1 Magallanes on 15 Sep 2009 - 13:17
like 99% of the windows users. (1% is the group of people that purge "shift-delete" their files).
#15.2 TRC on 15 Sep 2009 - 20:03
I just disable the recycle bin and remove it from the desktop. If I want to delete a file I delete it, not move it to another folder to have to empty later.
#16 jaywalker on 15 Sep 2009 - 10:35
I've added a desktop toolbar near the sys tray, and hidden all desktop icons. Find it easier to navigate everywhere using menus....
#17 chadlachlanross on 15 Sep 2009 - 12:26
I prefer the CCleaner Sidebar gadget. Easy access to run Ccleaner with a click, or to view the Recycle bin if necessary. http://gallery.live.com/liveItemDetail.asp...97c0ff&bt=1
#18 LaXu on 15 Sep 2009 - 13:55
It's a shame that in their infinite wisdom MS has apparently made the toolbar icons bigger than the taskbar docked icons so if I add recycle bin then it makes the taskbar taller which looks stupid.
#19 powerade01 on 15 Sep 2009 - 14:43
Did you know?
Apple sued to prevent other software companies from offering graphical user interfaces similar to its own. The company lost most of its claims but courts agreed Apple's Trash icon was original and protected by copyright. Non-Apple software may use other metaphors for file deletion, such as Recycle Bin, Smart Eraser, or Shredder.

Im not even going to say anything....
#20 +dead.cell on 15 Sep 2009 - 15:22
I've always kept my Recycle Bin under "My Computer". Completely out of the way, and I know where to find it if I need it.
#21 winkento on 15 Sep 2009 - 15:54
More simple and discrete :
1- Drag and drop Recycle Bin icon of the desktop on the Windows Explorer taskbar icon ;
2- Uncheck the display of the Recycle Bin in the desktop personnalization options.
#22 Darrian on 15 Sep 2009 - 17:44
Permanently delete files + do not prompt + hide recycle bin FTW
#23 datarecovery on 15 Sep 2009 - 19:30
Data recovery will definitely be needed for this OS. I am looking forward to playing around with it though. I'm sure it will beat Vista.

It isn't that I want my Desktop not to be used. The Desktop is a workspace for me. I like to have a clean workspace for when I'm going to use it next. Things may live there, but it is treated as a temporary location for all my files.

I prefer not having my recycle bin on my desktop.
#25 mail on 15 Sep 2009 - 20:23
Shift + Delete.

#27 Shining Arcanine on 15 Sep 2009 - 21:18
Microsoft popularized this when Windows Whistler was in development.
#28 PatrynXX on 15 Sep 2009 - 21:30
Thats something straight out ubuntu.... Usually don't use much on my desktop. Most of where I work is in the my computer or computer area. Which was lacking recycling bin. Don't think I need it taking up space on my taskbar either. In ubuntu don't mind. But the Superbar is already absurd, don't need another silly icon
#29 Dashel on 15 Sep 2009 - 22:09
Still a cludgy hack imo. I'll wait till it can become a full citizen of the Superbar.
#30 +Techno_Funky on 16 Sep 2009 - 05:05
Damn! nice tip, gotta use this.
#31 Lepton on 16 Sep 2009 - 05:07
LOL My desktop usually has 50 to 100 files waiting to be sorted/deleted/tested. 1 recycle bin on there doesn't bother me much.

A better solution is adding RecycleNOW to your taskbar or quick launch. 1 click instead of the 2 needed in this tip. Been using it for years.
#32 swiftflo5 on 20 Sep 2009 - 12:01
Help.
Carried this procedure out, but somewhere along the way cocked it up. Is there anyway I can reverse this and go back to the previous toolbar, without reinstalling win7.
#33 EVANK on 21 Sep 2009 - 14:35
I just done mine it's much better.
