Microsoft begins confirming Windows 7 launch parties

Microsoft has begun confirming Windows 7 launch parties for hosts across the world.

Neowin reported earlier this month that Microsoft is planning to offer copies of Windows 7 and party materials to those willing to hold launch parties in various countries across the world.

Lucky hosts will receive a special "Signature Edition" of Windows 7 Ultimate and a Windows 7 Party Pack which includes balloons, a must for every party. If that isn't enough then there's a lame party video that teaches you some "party tips". It reminds us of the Microsoft Songsmith marketing video.

So did you get confirmed and if so where are you holding your party?

Party may or may not happen though
#1.1 Lord Ba'al on 22 Sep 2009 - 01:31
Yes, I'm sure only few who signed up for this will actually hold a party... the very most only do it for the free goods
#1.2 Turion on 22 Sep 2009 - 05:35
I got selected and I'm planning to hold a party and follow thru with the deal. Hell it's well worth the free copy. Saves me money from buying it. Unfortunately I didn't get selected to beta test it, so this is good. I love Neowin.
#1.3 Skwerl on 22 Sep 2009 - 09:12
I got my confirmation and sent out invitations. I won't be farting around a whole lot with all the silly things they want the hosts to go over, but I will be showing off Media Center 7 (just like I have been for the past six months) and make food/drinks in the Windows logo colors.
#1.4 Skwerl on 25 Sep 2009 - 09:25
Here's a hilarious edit of the hosting video:

Better invent a cocktail for that.

"The Aero", a light blue colored mostly translucent drink.

Or as Apple [and their minions] would describe it: a lot of fluff with no substance. LOL
#2.5 FuhrerDarqueSyde on 22 Sep 2009 - 19:26
Now see I kinda figured Apple people would say describe it as something that'd make you output all over the floor. Alternatively, an Apple drink would be more like the fluff without substance.

Microsoft sure are going all out to push W7. Cheap copies for students, parties, huge launch event, multi-million dollar ad campaign. I guess they really need this to succeed, overcome their failure with Vista. Will see how it goes, may not be the best time to launch a new OS, but the economy seems to be picking up.

Microsoft have always had a huge launch event, and multi million dollar ad campaigns when they release a new OS...Don't know what rock you live under, oh yeh thats right you still haven't left your parents basement.

And Vista wasn't a failure, the OS itself was great and much better than XP. It was just people like you who went around spreading fud that ruined it.

Hmm considering I used the x64 version ever since day one. Please enlighten me with the so called issues you've been having?

- Performance issues? Fixed with a patch well before sp1, and if you didn't get it then sp1 fixed it.

- UAC prompts? Saw them only when installing programs and copying/deleting files from program file folders. If that still bugs you, a simple google search will give you a fix in the form of a patch.

- Driver issues? Everything of mine was detected during installing, and yes nvidias drivers did suck at first...but thats not microsofts fault. Vista supports 1000s more drivers out of box than XP ever did.

- Programs? Every program of mine has worked without an issue

So yes please tell me how was vista a bad OS? or maybe you were referring to the geico commercial...so easy even a caveman can do it...

So if you're a confirmed host, do you get the special 'Signature Edition' of Windows 7 along with the party pack shipment?

Yup.
#7.2 Solid Knight on 22 Sep 2009 - 17:33
What does the special edition offer that makes it special? Does it come with creator commentary? Interviews with the staff that made Windows 7 possible?

all of the videos are bloody hilarious...

how the actors got through it without laughing is the best part... it's just like a really really boring and rubbish meeting.. where someone bought cake!

I was accepted! Mine will be in Fort Smith, AR. Date and time still TBD...

That video (and the entire concept of the W7 party, really) is totally cheesy...but I'm getting a free copy of W7 and an excuse to have some friends over, so I'm all for it! :-)
#19 Thunderbuck on 22 Sep 2009 - 01:14
Mine is going to be on Oct 23 in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory.

Was a little confused; I first found out when I logged in to the site this afternoon, but when my e-mail arrived later it said I'd been named a "finalist". However, when I dug around my inbox a little more I found another message that told me I was a "confirmed host".
#20 cleverclogs on 22 Sep 2009 - 01:24

#26 Thunderbuck on 22 Sep 2009 - 03:43
Ya know, as dorky as this truly is, there's something kind of cool going on here...

It's hard to explain, but I'll try. I honestly don't take this too seriously. But, I do have a number of friends and co-workers who are at least a little interested in Win7, and I've been really impressed with it as a product. This launch party gives me a chance to show off little of what I've learned in using Win7 since the beta, and gives us an excuse to socialize, however lame that excuse might be.

A great many of us likely first learned of these events on Neowin; I sort of consider this an unofficial Neowin get-together too.

Like it or not, this has become a minor phenomenon. I heard Leo LaPorte epxressing his desire to host one on one of his podcasts last week, and CNET's Buzz Out Loud had a good laugh about it a couple of weeks ago.
#27 Titoist on 22 Sep 2009 - 03:47
The website is having a number of problems. I got an email that I was a "finalist" so I followed their steps and on their website it states that I am "Confirmed Host" even though I didn't get an email. Secondly, I keep getting errors on the site and my guests are trying to RSVP but they get "Error. That was not a valid invitation code".

I am thinking that their servers are failing.

I was confirmed and have sent invites today. We were already having a Halloween party within the correct dates, so I guess I'll put the poster up, and give some Windows 7 bags away.

And take heaps of photos to upload for MS.

Brisbane, Australia.

Oh my god, the video had a crappy script, but what's worse is how it's shot! They must have hired a ten-year-old jacked up on speed with a sensitive trigger finger on the zoom lever. It's enough to drive you nuts!

Another confirmed here in the UK I will definately be doing the party, I think it will be a laugh, and to be honest for the free gift MS are giving us its not much to ask ...

BTW, where did everyone get the details of whats in the party pack?
#39 ThomMcK on 22 Sep 2009 - 11:32
I thought this whole concept is quite hilarious, so naturally I signed up immediately!
I'm in the UK (Northamptonshire) and I didn't think it would actually come to anything. Then to my surprise I get confirmed as a host!

I think it's definitely going to have to be a Hallowe'en Geek themed party. Just got to think of some games (apart from the True or False quiz on the house party site). Windows Cocktails are also gonna be a must, anyone got good recipe ideas?

To be a true geekfest though I guess I would have to be the only one at my party LOL

With this signature copy and the ones I'm gonna nab at the Launch at Wembley I'm gonna have legit copies coming out of my ears :-)

If the site would friggin work. I got the email, I clicked to log on, signed in with my live account, then it asked me to connect it with my houseparty account, which it didn't accept my password for. I did a password reset and then tried it over and over again with the reset password which it finally accepted and announced that I got it, then tried to redirect me to another page and has failed. I went back to the main site to fix my password, which it then tells me my zip code isn't valid. Clicking on customer support gave an error that it couldn't find the page. The site is all levels of screwed up.

What is displayed if you are NOT selected. I used to see that results would be declared under "My applications" But now I see
"You don't have any current applications. Check out the events listing to apply for upcoming events"
Am I NOT selected

Now i refreshed the page and it says
Your application was received on Thursday, September 3 2009 and is now under review.

You will be notified by email of your status on or around Monday, September 21. Good luck!

Please note: Only one application per household; multiple applications will be disqualified.

I was accepted as well but I have had so much hassle and wasted time trying to operate the House Party website I sent them an email and asked them to close my account, I will be hosting my own party and managing my own guest list because I know I can do a better job.

What were Microsoft thinking in using House Party, their website is simply not up to the job, I have contacted a few people I know at Microsoft to see if they can send me some POS for my party, I'm not to worried about the Party pack or the free copy of Windows 7.

I will send my write up and party pictures to Microsoft direct, it will be a great success as I know a quite a few people will attend but I feel a lot happier now I am in control and not the awful House Party !!!
#50.1 JonathanMarston on 22 Sep 2009 - 15:07
House Party is pretty bad...it took me forever to get it to add guests (buggy site kept dropping guests), and now it's apparently being brought to its knees by all the Windows 7 fans. If House Party was hoping for more exposure through this (I had never heard of it before), they're getting it all right - just the wrong kind...

I wish they had built their own site for this. It's bad enough my friends are giving me crap for having a "Windows Party" but they can't even RSVP because the site can't handle the traffic.

I'm honestly not even expecting many people to show up but I explained to my friends that it's an excuse to come over for a few beers and I get a free copy of Windows out of the deal.

I don't know if anyone will see or reply to this, but I noticed this on the houseparty site...

The 25 character product key included in the inside left panel of the 32 bit Signature Edition (black sleeve) should be used for either 64 or 32 bit installation. The key is only good for one installation.
#64.1 mixpix on 02 Oct 2009 - 09:45
Hmm. I hope that's one installation like OEM, not "it only works once". I'll still host a party either way.

But if not... I already have 2 pre-ordered copies coming.

#65 mewhoelse2002 on 26 Sep 2009 - 14:12
I am still asked to wait... no red or green yet. One Red appeared that I am not selected, but turned back to yellow. So is this still on or the finalists announced and no one else would be selected
I havent seen anyone from India selected yet, is there anyone out there?
(I am also from India so wanted to check)
