New iPod nano banned in major gym chain's locker rooms

Apple's recently introduced iPod nano packed a couple new features, as is expected, but it also came with a built-in video camera. Whilst this is all well and good, the slim size of the nano makes it very discrete, meaning it can be used for less appropriate purposes. People are well aware of this, and, according to Pioneer Press, a major gym chain has now banned the device from its locker rooms to prevent any issues.

Life Time Fitness, a company which runs 84 gyms in a total of 19 states, has banned the use of the new iPod nano entirely from its locker rooms for one main reason: it's very hard to tell whether a user is recording a video or just selecting a song. This, as mentioned, has raised concern, though the prohibition isn't as large as it could be… the device is allowed in work out rooms, though video is still not allowed in that area.

This isn't a new development, though, as cellphones equipped with cameras have apparently been banned at health clubs for years already. It's unsure as to whether or not Apple will respond to this, though with the device already on the market, there may not be much they can do.

I guess I am in the minority where these policies don't apply. I go to the gym to workout not yak on the phone.

Its more about listening to music than talking

Wow, thats kinda shocking, i didn't know cellphone with cams are banned in health clubs...

Anyways, Maybe apple can come out with a new firmware where when a user starts recording, there would be sounds...

"as cellphones equipped with cameras have apparently been banned at health clubs for years already. "

Yeah, completely banned :d I think that should read: locker rooms / changing areas :p

Anyway, there's no reason to use a device in the changing room. I support the ban of all devices in changing areas.

It'll start playing swanky disco music.

The phone should play Dave Rose's "The Stripper."

I see that as making the situation worse, as everyone would think "that made no noise, so (s)he's not recording me"... All one would have to do is not update their firmware, and they'd get away with it with even less suspicion.

It's good to ban all devices that record video or have cameras from locker rooms or changing areas.

I don't have a problem with them, but I've seen so many people taking video/photos with their devices just for morbidity in all kinds of places.

I still don't understand why you need a camera on your iPod.

Because being able to take a video is vastly more important than listening to music, or even taking a simple picture!

: Dunno what Apple was smoking when they thought a camera was a good idea.

Must've been low on ideas to get people to buy re-buy their mp3 players.
#6.3 neodorian on 23 Sep 2009 - 16:41
It's this year's excuse to BUY MORE STUFF! Seriously, if you don't already have this functionality on your cell phone or point-and-shoot camera maybe you need it on your mp3 player but I seriously doubt it. I guess it made sense since cheap cameras are easy to slap on anything as a selling point.

Right. I'm sick of companies trying to make 1 device do 10 things averagely. Id rather have 1 device do 1 thing spectacularly.

lol sorry..just wanted to point out your love for the word "though"
#8.1 antareus on 23 Sep 2009 - 14:30
Just wait: someone will come forth and defend the run-on sentences as "what makes Neowin unique."
#8.2 +dead.cell on 23 Sep 2009 - 15:16
I'm a closet "though" user. I generally catch it upon proofreading though.

its unprofessional journalism at its best.

I sure would be ****ed. Not about to buy another music player without a cam when my iPhone that I already own plays music.

EDIT: Wow. Over sensitive 'swear' filter.

#12 +warwagon on 23 Sep 2009 - 15:35
SHOCKING!!!....

See that's the problem with apple wanting to put camera's on all their god damn devices. Sooner or later you are banned from using them. Because of that stupid camera.
#13 bbfc_uk on 23 Sep 2009 - 16:48
I was a member of a gym that banned the use of mobiles and other devices with cameras built in from changing rooms and the gym itself, which is totally acceptable especially since most gyms are mixed.

Just have them put some neon orange tape over the lens and call it a day.
#19 LUTZIFER on 23 Sep 2009 - 20:17
Well I guess I can see them being banned, but I don't see what that has to do with Apple and why they should respond, and do something about it.

Tbh im not sure why they put a video recorder on a nano!

Its pedo heaven if you ask me!!
#23 RangerLG on 24 Sep 2009 - 14:01
I'm a member of LTF. This has been in place since inception as the wording says "devices with recording capabilities" (or something similar), so this would naturally fall under that umbrella. What is funny though is that when you walk into the locker room, you will see plenty of guys using their phones which do have recording capabilities. Even employees are in there chatting and texting away. When I look around the room, all I am thinking is why would I even want to video this?
#24 ManOfMystery on 24 Sep 2009 - 16:08
Did Apple not use their f-ing brains when they designed that sorry excuse for a music player??? I mean why the hell would anyone need a camera in their music player when everyone already has one on their phone?? I think Apple should focus on improving the music quality of their music players from mediocre to at least acceptable instead of spending money adding features that nobody needs. If it was at least a good camera but I've played around with the new nano, it's bs.
#25 thealexweb on 25 Sep 2009 - 21:35
Mmm unsure if this really matters, everyone has probably already had the situation where someone pulls your towel off you and then snaps a pic of your crotch.
