Google Wave spreading to 100,000 more users tomorrow

Google unveiled a new project of theirs back in may, which they gave the name 'Google Wave'. It was exciting for a lot of people who got to try it out early, as, though a pre-release (therefore bug-ridden) product, it had a lot of potential.

The company has polished it up a lot since then, and is now ready to extend its testing to 100,000 more users, according to the Google Blog. The invites will be going out tomorrow, September 30, to the following groups of people, as Google mentioned:
  • Developers who have been active in the developer preview [which Google] started back in June
  • The first users who signed up and offered to give feedback on wave.google.com
  • Select customers of Google Apps
In addition to this, Google will be asking those who are already using the service to nominate some of their friends who should be invited; Google Wave is aimed at communicating with those you know, so that'll make it a better experience for testers. Of course, Google Wave isn't quite ready for full public usage yet, as Google stated, "There are also still key features of Google Wave that we have yet to fully implement. For example, you can't yet remove a participant from a wave or define groups of users, draft mode is still missing and you can't configure the permissions of users on a wave. We'll be rolling out these and other features as soon as they are ready — over the next few months."

The Google Apps users to be invited will most likely be around the Sydney area, according to TechCrunch, as that's where the project is being developed, and the company would like to work closely with those using it. It's good to see Google progressing nicely on the project, and soon enough they may extend the invites even further. If you signed up to try it out early but didn't make it in, keep an eye on your inbox tomorrow.

Anyone using this service and has an extra invite can pass one onto me. I'd like one just to see first hand what the hype is all about. Let me know if you need my email or whatever and I'll PM it to you

You're not missing anything. This article mentions nothing. There is a 1hr 20min video here: http://wave.google.com/help/wave/about.html

The idea of this post was to say that Google is opening up a few more places for more testers, it was not to explain what Google wave is.

And like all good news articles, the reporter usually puts down a single paragraph near the end of the original story for that very purpose - to briefly describe what it is that they are talking about, when it seems like they are coming into the middle of a subject.

So, Google Wave is like MySpace and Facebook?
#6.1 SharpGreen on 29 Sep 2009 - 21:06
Take, gmail. Throw in live updates and a few other things and the ability to right mini-apps against it and you have Google Wave.

Its actually pretty cool IMHO.
#6.2 SharpGreen on 29 Sep 2009 - 21:07
Its not a social network site like myspace or facebook. No where near really.

Also sorry for posting twice here mods, but the edit button wouldn't work

Actually, yes, it is exactly like that, wrapped around gmail. But who the hell uses gmail for chat, etc? I don't even use the web interface for email (IMAP ftw).

So, I will try it out when it goes really, REALLY wide, but if it's going to look as ugly as everything else from Google (gtalk ftl), it's not likely to get much traction.

Gmail and Google search rule. The rest of it I can pass on.

I look at Wave very different, instead of looking at it as a chat/email panel, I think it has the potential to be come a fundamental communication platform. based on traditional communication protocols (Client to Server, P2P etc), this is a second layer collaboration platform. It's definitely not limited to chat/email, it can take social networking into a new level.
A few wild possibilities: Group Conference, Massive Online RPG Games, Team Systems, Photo Tagging, Document Management and Share.

I'm hoping to be one of the first 100K. I think I signed up pretty early.

That's the first 'nice/sexy' icon/logo Google have done. Love it.
#9.1 Phil_123 on 30 Sep 2009 - 02:20
Somehow the logo looks Microsoft-y to me. I wonder why.
#10 Julius Caro on 29 Sep 2009 - 21:50

#11 LynxMukka on 29 Sep 2009 - 21:54
Care to mention what exactly this is?
#12 SirDoan on 29 Sep 2009 - 22:28
seems very big.
#13 MrA on 29 Sep 2009 - 22:40
Well, it's the 30th here in Sydney (where the Wave team is located). Just a few more hours until I can send out invites friends and family that wants them. Any I have left over (there are very few invites per person), I'll give out to Neowinians.

This looks like MS One Note but done better and on the web. A mashup of standard and instant messaging options. Like mixing Google Docs, Gmail, Gtalk, RSS Feeds and social network updates in one place-that's what it looks like. What the actual end use ends up being is still a mystery since developers cannot predict which features users will flock to and beat on and which ones they do not care about. Looks useful to those of us who do not have a social network account presently.
#16.1 Remote Sojourner on 30 Sep 2009 - 08:48
Its not the same. It's different just because of the fact that wave is a protocol much like XMPP and is federated so you for using wave (in future) you don't have to sign up with google but you can have your own server or goto a different provider (much like XMPP). It's pretty awesome in my opinion. The only obstacle in its path is if it would gain widespread acceptance.
#17 DomZ on 30 Sep 2009 - 08:22
Well it looks like I didn't get in
#18 FISKER_Q on 30 Sep 2009 - 13:08

#20 FISKER_Q on 30 Sep 2009 - 16:26
