24 hours after UK operator Orange announced plans to offer the iPhone in the UK, Vodafone has confirmed their intentions to offer the device in early 2010.

Following the end of Apple's exclusive deal with O2 yesterday, Vodafone confirmed this morning that they plan to offer the iPhone 3G and 3Gs in the UK from early next year. Analysts are now expecting a price war between O2, Orange and Vodafone early next year as the rivals try to shave pounds off the monthly tariff costs.

Similar to Orange, Vodafone is refusing to confirm tariff prices and the exact availability date until later. Customers who are interested in the iPhone on Vodafone can register their interest on Vodafone's site.

This could also be good for people in the US on Verizon Wireless with their Vodafone ties. An iPhone with a GSM and CDMA radio like my BlackBerry would be great and I'd most definitely consider making the switch to the iPhone on Verizon Wireless if it were a world phone.

this is the best thing that could happen for the consumers, i can see vodafone coming out with some decent packages and i wouldn't be surprised if alot of people jump ship.

If you go to Three's website and search "iPhone" the results mention http://iphone.three.co.uk, if you go to this it takes you back to the homepage. So I expect them to announce something in the coming days.

I believe that ended August 31st (as a summer only offer). Hopefully it'll return though.

This is definitely great news. I love the iPhone 3G and plan to upgrade to the 3Gs in March when my contract expires so hopefully this will drive down the tariffs and drive up quality in the networks. The EU really need to take action against networks holding exclusivity on a phone unless they make it themselves (like some O2 phones, and I guess the T-Mobile G1), the tariffs O2 have been giving us are no where near good value for money - we need the competition.

There's still the chance they do price fixing behind doors and end up with very similar prices. I think in other countries with more than one carrier selling the iphone, prices are mostly the same.

From the BBC Article about this:

"A spokesperson for Vodafone said the firm was "delighted" at securing an agreement with Apple and that the phone was going to be primarily for existing Vodafone customers.
This is a different model from that adopted by O2 which used the iPhone as an incentive to attract new customers."

The site is advertising the 3GS, so if anything is different I expect it to be more storage.

I guess apple is ****ed at how some carriers are handling things. In spain, telefonica retailers REFUSED to give the phone to existing customers during the first months. I went to the store, and being already a movistar customer they told me they were only selling it customers from other companies (not even new sign ups).

You misunderstand the term model, it doesn't mean product, it means a business process

Wow. Vodafone now. Love all this.
As above hope they don't rebrand firmware. I bet Apple wouldn't let them though.

The loaded question is will Vodaphone partner VZW (Verizon Wireless, which is 40 percent owned by Vodaphone) also bite? Also, what is Vodaphone's UK-based network? If it is the same as VZW (CDMA) then things could get real interesting.

It's GSM - so no CDMA iPhone yet....
Technically, the iPhone has always been able to run on Orange, Vodafone, T-Mobile and O2 in the Uk.
The only network it can't support without modifications is Three.

Just in time for Apple, as all other phone manufacturers turn to Android and it's looking like iPhone is no longer the holder of the crown (HTC Hero should have that now).
I still think anyone considering getting an iPhone should consider the Hero, I did - and wow, what a phone, I'm glad I sent my 3GS back (2 week trial).

Vodafone are rolling out the iPhone to Ireland also, for any of the irish readers..
