That's right, October 22 is creeping up fast, and Windows 7 is getting very close to being available to the general public, even though most of us probably have our hands on a copy by now. According to Engadget, these Windows 7 retail boxes arrived in a Chicago Electronics shop today.

If you recall, back in May of this year the box art was leaked and then later confirmed by various postings across Microsoft retail sites.

Many of us have also gotten their hands on Windows 7 Party Packs for the Windows 7 House Parties that Microsoft is pushing to get consumers to adopt Windows 7 even quicker.

Windows 7 is Microsoft's latest and most highly anticipated Operating System, which has been the center of attention since Microsoft started sharing about it around this time last year at PDC. In January, Microsoft had an official public beta of build "7000" which had at least 2.5 million users attempt to download it in the first 24 hours of the beta being open, which crippled their download servers and brought TechNet to a crawl.

In May, Microsoft made the Release Candidate, Build "7100", available to the public through until August 20, stating that this version of Windows 7 would be free for "six months" if you continued to use the RC until it expired. This build had over 100 fixes and tweaks that Microsoft had provided thanks to testers feedback.

On August 6, Microsoft made available the RTM code, Build "7600", of Windows 7 to Technet/MSDN users, and general availabilty on October 22 marks the final phase of Windows 7's release.

Neowin will be reporting live from the upcoming Windows 7 launch in NYC with Steve Ballmer on October 22. Stay tuned.

I am not really sure if this is big news or not. We all expected Win 7 to be in place by the 22th of Oct, thus MS is shipping and retailers are receiving so as to get ready for the big day.

The important news is that it is now at stores, and the confirmation of the packaging.

Having a retail box is kinda nice I suppose, but meh, OEM here I come!
#3.1 Billus on 05 Oct 2009 - 08:54
Haha yea, OEM all the way but the pretty boxes.....

yeah OEM is probably best for those who still need to get it since you can get it on newegg.com currently for $99.99 (for either 32bit or 64bit Home Premium til Oct 20th) but only catch is 64bit or 32bit... you cant get both but it aint a real issue since most people nowadays should be using 64bit if your PC has a 64bit CPU.

Wouldn't Retail work out cheaper since OEM is only allowed activation on one PC permanently? Plus Retail disc has 32 and 64-bit editions in it

I only need it for one PC. And I only need the 64 bit version.

So not for me.

The only problem with buying OEM is if you make a lot of hardware changes. That's why I stick with retail.

on my xp oem copy i completely changed my system parts over a period of 4months, has it changed so i can't do that or was i lucky?

exactly how? , because i just assumed they where pretty much the same because you get 1 PC per copy besides the 64bit and 32bit on OEM being separate and RETAIL you get a choice to use either.

but i always thought if you made any major hardware changes the windows activation would act up anyways regardless of Retail or OEM?

hehe Do not diplay means nothing now?

I would assume that "Do not sell or display" means "Do not sell or display in store".

and still no Windows Family packs in site.
#6.1 CrashOverride on 06 Oct 2009 - 01:23
My thoughts exactly. With many families having more than 1 computer in the household, and security software being offered for 1-3 computers, you'd think M$ would actually offer by now a 1-3 pc license. Even with a small price increase over a single license, most would go for it in my opinion.

Didn't say don't take photos lol

" even though most of us probably have our hands on a copy by now."

There's no way the majority of readers to this site have a copy.

i'll just wait for the OEM copies to go on sale. there's no way i'm paying over $300 for Ultimate when all i need is the disc and install key. the packaging doesn't matter to me since it just takes space on the shelf

My OEM distributors (Max Group, ASI, etc) have been telling me that Oct. 12th or so, OEM copies will be orderable from the distributors with a street/cannot-sell date of Oct. 22 (boo!). They are verifying that street date, as supposedly the big retail stores (aka Best Buy) might be selling Win7 systems up to a week prior to Oct. 22. If I can't sell a box with Win7 OEM on it the same time they do, I'm going to be royally ticked off.

Supposed *ship* date last I heard (on the net somewhere) from Newegg was Oct. 22 itself. That's a Thursday, factor in 3 days shipping, puts it around Tuesday/Wednesday at the earliest I guess. Not sure when anyone else is shipping it.
