Windows 7 begins to release to the public across the world
Right now, it's October 22nd in some parts of the world, and Microsoft has begun releasing Windows 7 across the world at various launch parties and events. In New Zealand, Microsoft held events in Auckland and Wellington to promote the launch of Windows 7 by gathering a crowd and making a big Windows 7 logo with them.
Windows 7, is available worldwide today to the general public, whereas before now it has only been available to technet/msdn subscribers, as well as VLK owners and university students around the globe. Windows 7 had the largest beta testing process in the history of Windows release cycles, with well over 8 million copies of the public beta being downloaded in 3 months.
In May, Microsoft made the Release Candidate, Build "7100", available to the public through until August 20, stating that this version of Windows 7 would be free for "six months" if you continued to use the RC until it expired. This build had over 100 fixes and tweaks that Microsoft had provided thanks to testers feedback. On August 6, Microsoft made available the RTM code, Build "7600", of Windows 7 to Technet/MSDN users, and general availabilty on October 22 marks the final phase of Windows 7's release - after 3 years of development and testing, which was heavily user driven.
From today, Windows 7 will be available from retailers around the world, as well as online stores such as Amazon.

So, Neowin, have you got your copy yet? Hot off the press? Or have you had it for a while?
Update: Microsoft NZ has made available a Photosynth of the events in New Zealand on their promotional website.
Update #2: Microsoft showed a promotional video at the launch event earlier today in the United Kingdom that counts up the releases of Windows. Notice that they omitted Windows ME. Thanks Long Zheng!
Update #3: Microsoft is offering real-time Windows 7 tweets via a update that just went live to the Windows site.

if you don't know who this is, you have no right to comment on how good an OS is.

I for one have just come back to vista, windows 7 has blown its last chance for me. Slower (slower than vista and xp) and buggy as hell even weird preview pane bug. Uses more ram while idle than Vista and takes longer to bootup, overall rather shocking OS.

Maybe you should put your original copy of Windows 98 back on that computer, should fix all your problems
ruhgster - 21 October 2009 - 21:46
Sure your not still running the alpha preview?

I'm just confused. You must have some major issues. I 've installed used windows 7 on around 4 machines. Never once had a crash.

Same....well 1 crash...but that was a hard-disk failure

Sounds like Windows 98 to me. Windows 7 is nothing like thealexweb described, not even during the pre-beta.
+techbeck - 21 October 2009 - 22:01
Yea, you have issues buddy. I have it on my work and home laptop (thanks TECHNET!) and no issues what so ever. Runs quicker than Vista did and has not crashed once. Few others have installed it as well with no issues.

I wonder if he even realizes the background on 7?
Vista had good functionality and horrible performance... 7 expanded upon Vista's functionality improvements and vastly improved system performance. If he were a developer or IT Pro, he'd surely have some background on just how they did this (for starters, with on-demand services).
Maybe he's a script kiddie sitting in his mom's basement on a 386?

That doesn't mean there aren't any problems. I have Windows 7 installed on 2 machines, my home desktop (x64 with 6 Gb), and my work HP elitebook laptop (x64 with 4 Gb). I also had it installed on my wife's laptop, also an HP laptop with 4 Gb.
However, I took it back to XP after continued lockups. The problem is a known one, there are some bugs with the power/hibernation system in Windows 7 which has been reported with several laptop models from several brands.
Her laptop would just lock up on the weirdest times.... in the middle of work, when closing the lid, when opening the lid, etc.
XP is once again rock stable, although it is only using 3 Gb of the 4 Gb of RAM right now.
I will install Windows 7 on that laptop, but I think I will wait till all the drivers have been released for that model, and till there are a few more compatability patches. Till then, it will run XP.
On my two other machines..... Windows 7 runs like a charm! Absolutely wonderful. Just this one laptop.... and no, the ram was tested with Ubuntu and Memtest86+ - no errors.

While I don't agree with Windows 7 being buggy, it certainly wasn't faster than Vista on my laptop. I also found the new task-bar annoying. And Libraries? That's going confuse alot of people. I don't deny Windows7 has improvements, but for now, for me, on my laptop, Vista is better and more comfortable.
@vaximily: Vistas performance is fine for me...

Is that not more of a driver/manufacturer problem than Windows 7?
I'm also running Win7 on my box at home for over a month now, no problems whatsoever.
I also deployed Win 7 to over 20 PC's at work, for almost two months now, and they all run fine, on P4 2.8GHz with 1GB RAM up to Dual Cores with 4GB. Tested lots of drivers and software, no issues so far.
brent3000 - 22 October 2009 - 00:08
Being able to run 7 WITH areo features on a small net book which i would not dare touch with Vista and ran ok with XP...
I think someones posting form their Macbook pro...
iamwhoiam - 22 October 2009 - 00:17
If they're experiencing issues and bad performance, how is that trolling? While uou, I, or most others haven't had any issues with 7, doesn't mean others haven't.
Shiranui - 22 October 2009 - 00:19
You must be using SnowPussy, or whatever it's called...
