Microsoft drops support for Family Guy Windows 7 special

As you may remember, Microsoft recently announced that a Windows 7 branded episode of Family Guy would be airing in the U.S. on November 8. In a surprise twist, Microsoft has now dropped support for the episode, meaning that it'll still be shown, but with a different sponsor.

In a public statement, a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed, "we initially chose to participate in the Seth and Alex variety show based on the audience composition and creative humor of Family Guy, but after reviewing an early version of the variety show, it became clear that the content was not a fit with the Windows brand. According to Variety, Microsoft's marketing deal, including the Family Guy section, remains, despite it not being a part of the "Almost Live Comedy Show."

Strangely, however, when the deal was first announced, Gayle Troberman (a Microsoft consumer engagement & advertising general manager) stated that the way Windows 7 would be treated in the show wasn't a concern to the company. Variety noted that in the special Seth MacFarlane and Alex Borstein carried on with the usual "Family Guy" jokes, which included "riffs on deaf people, the Holocaust, feminine hygiene and incest," which lead to the dropping of sponsorship.

The Family Guy special will still be run on the evening of November 8, as we mentioned, along with the other shows on Fox, though it will have another sponsor who is yet to be named. There are no rumors yet of who that sponsor might be, but surely it'll be announced soon, as November 8 isn't far away.

That's something Neowin (or someone) did. It's Ballmer's head posted on the ghost of Peter's stepdad.

Wow, I'd just scrap the whole idea, the clips I've seen so far make me want to never watch Family Guy again :/

Wouldn't it be hilarious to have Apple sponsor it?
#6.1 AnthoWin on 26 Oct 2009 - 23:51
yes that would be the best!
#6.2 cybertimber2008 on 27 Oct 2009 - 00:12
Apple, with Verizon droid following it.

Apple needs to shutup. Hating them lately, so irritating seeing news articles about them trying to ruin Windows 7. They aren't funny anymore, not at all. I just wish Microsoft would sue them by now.
#6.4 jaywalker on 27 Oct 2009 - 03:23
Or Canonical... if only they had money... XD

There there everything will be okay. Just take a deep breath...

Knowing MS, they probably wanted a Family Guy episode vaguely resembling their Windows 7 Launch Party Guide

That definitely captures how much fun it is to own a Windows 7-based PC.

agreed!
#7.3 Tim Dawg on 27 Oct 2009 - 02:15
Wow. I love Windows 7 but I have to agree that video is SO lame! I love how they're all informally talking about their "parties" like it's not all scripted.

especially the part where they dubbed the voice telling you contact their customer support

This isn't real is it? I don't get it is it supposed to be a joke.?

Microsoft didn't really put out this garbage?

I dunno. I just hung out with a bunch of friends I hadn't seen in a while, drank lots of beer, stayed up until 5am, and listened to music and watched movies. Win7 is much more fun when your monitor is your living room HDTV.
#7.7 neodorian on 27 Oct 2009 - 19:57
Also as I can't believe people haven't figured out yet...Microsoft hired Houseparty.com to organize these parties. This is essentially their generic party planning guide with a few specifics thrown in. Yes, they should have hired a marketing team rather than houseparty.com. No, they didn't make this video.
#7.8 .Neo on 27 Oct 2009 - 23:46
^ Microsoft hired them and gave the "all clear" to go ahead and include it with their "party" packs. That's just as bad.

Somehow I knew someone would quote my post a take the time to write down a serious reply.

I'm not sure what exactly Microsoft was expected.... have they not SEEN Family Guy?

That reminds me of this one time when Peter ate his food with sock puppets...

Family guy.. haha they're so lame. Maybe they should aim for someone higher like Matt Groening from the Simpsons.
#10.1 RAID 0 on 27 Oct 2009 - 00:08
Maybe 10 years ago... wait... 15 years ago.
#10.2 dewaaz on 27 Oct 2009 - 00:31
After Groening did Playboy, I can just imagine it:

Marge sitting naked, viewing the Playboy website on her computer running Windows 7

"ooh, that shiny new superbar gets me all hot inside... but not as much as YOUR superbar, homey"

Unlikely. Groening has been an Apple fan for years.

That's a real shame but it explains a lot.

The only time Fox has used a Mac to make a joke that was actually funny was in Family Guy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mhu9JxnVZvQ).

I guess they had never watched Family Guy? It was probably too 'crude' for them.

The typical MS decision is made from demographics and sales figures, rather than common sense or aesthetics. They were told by marketing that Family Guy was the most popular show for the demographics (dumb white guys and college age teens) so they would use it in the Win7 campaign for that particular demographic. No one at MS management had any idea what the show was or what it was about. When someone finally decided to take a look, they had a frenzied meeting immediately after to call the whole thing off.

I'm also wondering if maybe McFarlane took this as an opportunity to sneak one in on MS and the episode may have had some hidden anti-corporate subtext or something else directed as MS or Ballmer.
#12.2 GreyWolfSC on 27 Oct 2009 - 03:29
I don't recall saying that.

But really, reading the whole article before commenting is too much to ask. And let's face it, even the creator of Family Guy isn't immature enough to see any need to make anti-Microsoft jokes.

ya cause black, asian, arabic, albinos etc... people and non college teens dont watch family guy. Did you read what you typed or did you just type the first thing to come to your obviously useless brain and hope for truth??

It's family guy.. what do you expect?
(3 replies) #14 +Steeley on 27 Oct 2009 - 00:28
I'm a bit confused. So the episode will still air and still be about Windows 7, but it won't be sponsored by Microsoft? Is that right?

What were they thinking anyway? Everybody knows Family Guy makes baby Jesus cry.
#14.1 ahhell on 27 Oct 2009 - 03:29
If I understand correctly, the show has nothing to do with Windows 7. It was just that Microsoft bought up all the ad time for the show.

I could be wrong though.
#14.2 PureLegend on 27 Oct 2009 - 05:39
There's clips of the episode showing Windows 7 was in it a lot.
#14.3 GP007 on 27 Oct 2009 - 07:58
The win7 stuff will be in theres till, it's basically a case of some of the OTHER family guy jokes that could and probably DO make people mad or come off as being insensitive or something? I haven't seen it, but do you want to be part of some ep that could make fun of something that could then have a backlash on you for being a sponsor?

IN the end Win7 is still in I think, we'll know when the ep airs on TV though.

I wonder how many different groups threatened to boycott Windows 7 if Microsoft went ahead with this.

None? Why would they go that extreme?

Speaking of Family Guy, why none this week? No Simpsons or America Dad either, not even Big Bang Theory. What is going on, this week sucks.

F'ing baseball...
#16.2 Solid Knight on 27 Oct 2009 - 21:34
American Dad is and always has been unfunny.
#16.3 TRC on 27 Oct 2009 - 21:46
I didn't like American Dad at all when it first started, but it really has gotten a lot better. Personally I think it's much better than Family Guy now.
#17 DATmafia on 27 Oct 2009 - 03:16
Family Guy used to be funny until they beat their material to death by treading the same ground over and over and over and over and over... South Park knows how to keep it fresh while also moving on to other shock topics. They too have beat a dead horse but know when to move on to another horse. :-P

I don't care about who sponsors the episode, what i care about it the episode being aired
#21 Jugalator on 27 Oct 2009 - 08:31
lol, last time it was "That's cool!", now it's "Well, FG sucks anyway". Hahaha.

I hope it'll still be aired despite Microsoft's shaky legs. They can't have researched that series very well.
#22 carmatic on 27 Oct 2009 - 08:56
well its good for showing that seth and the guys behind family show havent sold out to microsoft...

It would be fun to see Apple get in there, it will be even better to see the Windows fanboy comments the day after!!

p.s Im a niether a Mac fanboy or a Windows fanboy, its getting a tad boring reading comments from both Apple and Windows bashers, its starting to sound like a school playground. at the end of the day who gives a crap? it's a matter of choice.
#23.1 M_Lyons10 on 28 Oct 2009 - 05:35
I don't believe that Microsoft pulled support because the jokes were poking fun at them... It sounds to me like they pulled support because they were more concerned about the controversial content in the episode (Which in fairness is consistent with the show...). LOL

#26 vetneufuse on 27 Oct 2009 - 15:26
The new sponsor is Apple.... jk
#27 toadeater on 28 Oct 2009 - 01:43
So it's ok for Gates to pal around with quasi-gangsta rapper Jay-Z, but Family Guy is too controversial?
#28 M_Lyons10 on 28 Oct 2009 - 05:33
I thought this was an odd fit when it was first announced... Family Guy can be funny, but with it's trend of making fun of so many people, it's kind of risky for a company to endorse that show, let alone as part of a marketing campaign...
#29 Camille Canon on 29 Oct 2009 - 11:37
Thanks for you post, Sam. It seems that Microsoft couldn't handle Seth MacFarlane's wit. I am interested to see how with come forward as the sponsor, though. I suggest checking out Car Dudham's post as well, which discusses how the Family Guy/ Windows 7 extravaganza reflects the changing climate of television advertising.
