For those who are unaware, Netflix is a great service for renting movies over the Internet, saving the time and hassle of visiting the video store. The service is available for computers, Microsoft's Xbox 360, and as announced today, the Sony PS3, which will be compatible starting next month.

In a press release posted earlier, Netflix revealed the news, stating that the service will be available at no extra cost for those already subscribed. According to the press release, "watching movies instantly streamed from Netflix via the PS3 system will be enabled by a free, instant streaming Blu-ray disc that is being made available to all Netflix members." Of course, you'll need to be connected to the Internet on your PS3 for this to be possible.

If you'd like to sign up to receive Netflix notifications about the service and request a free instant streaming Blu-Ray disc, feel free to check out the official website to do so.

I am guessing Sony Pictures will let Netflix open up the Sony movie line to the PS3 users now, and still keep the block on 360 owners. <g>

I really hope Sony Pictures opens up their catalog for the 360 now. It was just wrong to "remove" the titles from Netflix on the 360.

Instant streaming & Netflix is good....if you want to watch OLD movies and shows...

Very true.

You can live stream over 10000+ titles!!

9950 of them are pre 1990's

Mind readers, I've been looking at signing up soon but was trying to think of a way to get it to stream to my future PS3.

Hopefully the PS3 browser is good enough to browse the Netflix website so that we can add movies and shows to our queue from the console. A custom interface or portal for the PS3 would be better, though.

the internet browser sucks in the ps3
#8.2 NeoTrunks on 26 Oct 2009 - 14:40
That it does. It's still useful for some quick things, especially when the computer is in another room. And I actually looked at the press release. We will have an interface for such . Also reserved a disc.

At this rate Netflix will own everything soon. Next they will get first run shows, who knows.

Cool - I wonder if it will be available in Canada

i'm thinking they might be adding a custom ui since they are mailing out a blu ray disc to add compatibility. seems odd to not just use a dvd, unless it's to prevent non blu ray owners from getting a hold of the data. don't care either way, i'm already signed up for the disc!

If I remember rightly software for the PS3 has to be on Blu-ray.
#11.2 lothodon on 26 Oct 2009 - 16:46
turns out it's going to be accessed through bd-live, hence the "need" for the blu ray disc. from what i've read a more full featured app should be out afterward, but the initial offering will be bd-live.

It seems that by using the disc method is the only way to get around the exclusive agreement on 360. I doubt we will see anything other than the disc method for quite some time.

At least some of the games from the original Xbox work. On new PS3s, NO PS2 games work.
#12.4 NeoTrunks on 27 Oct 2009 - 18:23
To be fair, they still support PS1 games. It does suck that they do not have PS2 compatibility, at least not yet.

too bad you never got a 60gb if you wanted to play ps2 games so much mate
#13.1 +Chrono951 on 26 Oct 2009 - 18:56
This is the major reason I will never give up my 60gb. I has everything and I can always upgrade the hard drive if space becomes an issue.
#13.2 NeoTrunks on 27 Oct 2009 - 18:23
My original 60GB has been upgraded to a 500GB and has been wonderful. It really does everything.
#14 PatrynXX on 26 Oct 2009 - 22:00
Now if only they'd let my Sony BDP-S350 stream netflix
