Google announced today that it will be offering a free turn-by-turn directional GPS service for its Android 2.0 mobile devices.

According to Gizmodo, Google is working closely with Apple to deliver this app in the future to the iPhone. Google's GPS navigation will take advantage of Google Maps, hybrid and Street View images.

When Android 2.0 ships in November to consumers, the Google GPS mobile application will offer a fantastic feature list including traffic data. Traffic data will notify users of accidents and slow traffic on major highways. The cloud map network, which will be constantly updated, will offer the latest reports on highway traffic flow, using data from department's highway cameras and from cell phones using Google Maps.

Google's GPS application will offer cached maps, so users will still find their way, even if they lose Internet connection. There isn't any route planning for multiple destinations built into the mobile service, but you can search for points of interest along the way including gas and restaurants.

Google's GPS will offer a many more advantages over current devices, including showing satellite view of the overhead and a hybrid overlay with street names. The device will also offer a street view hybrid overlay with arrows when you're supposed to turn or at your final destination.

If the Google GPS releases for the iPhone in the near future, it will definitely ruffle some feathers with developers, who are selling similar applications for upwards of $50.

But I doubt that will be free, considering how Apple do business.
#2.3 RaulMR on 28 Oct 2009 - 15:21
If Google app for Android will be free then, i think Apple maps with tour-by-tour will be free to!? make sense.
#2.4 Pabs(Sco) on 28 Oct 2009 - 16:09
Its up to the developer to charge not the Manufacturer. Google can happily put this on the Apple App Store for free.

I'd be happy with this, since I go my very first iPhone yesterday
#2.5 Manish on 28 Oct 2009 - 20:20
Would definitely get this on the iPhone in an instant! Edit: It might be getting built-in to the Map app directly, which is even better.

Google should charge for it through Apple - that way it will lure more customers to Android.

I would guess Apple is "denying" their application to the appstore cause it will hurt others.

So does it have addresses built in too? Because for example if I lose my connection on my iPhone, Google Maps wouldn't work if you type addresses in.
#5.1 +shinji257 on 28 Oct 2009 - 16:04
It pulls all the stuff over the internet so... no internet -- no nav.

It caches ahead as far as I understood it from the Engadget postings. So no internet at one point of the route shouldn't be a problem.
#5.4 Simon on 28 Oct 2009 - 22:04
Images, sure, but afaik it doesn't pull address information and cache it - that's probably a coordinate returned only when you search.

Hey not fair! No mention of Windows Mobile! :-(
#6.1 +shinji257 on 28 Oct 2009 - 16:05
I'm sure they will port.
#6.2 mrp04 on 29 Oct 2009 - 04:47
Whatever, just use TomTom or Garmin. They store the maps locally so you don't need to rely on a data connection.

Damn..is there anything they don't give away for free? Very nice..this spells trouble for Garmin Mobile and others...

Garmin's stock price dropped 20% today. TomTom dropped 40%. The end is coming.

Uh...you do realize that the entire market is down today right? Very little to do with Google's announcement.

A 20% drop in a day isn't a regular market fluctuation.

It's free because businesses and others can advertise their locations on google maps. In addition it sells Android phones and helps them serve more ads and make more effective searches.

Advertising is a fact of life. I would rather relevant and valuable ads rather than the usual method of just bombarding everyone with everything. Advertising isn't evil by its nature as it allows many things to be offered free of charge.

Good to hear. Hope it works well.
#12 dewaaz on 28 Oct 2009 - 16:51
this is insane. from that one trailer, i'm sure it will crap all over navigon, tomtom, copilot, etc.

with offline maps too, this product will be gold.
#13 Andrew Lyle on 28 Oct 2009 - 16:53
This means the installation file will be small too

I will actually use this when and if it comes out for the iPhone.
#14 Zoom7000 on 28 Oct 2009 - 17:03
I hope they have an offline maps version (similar to TomTom etc) for those not able to or in an area with an Internet/Network connection.

can i pre-download the maps?.

otherwise it will be useless for must users.

define "most users"

anyone with a smartphone will be able to use this when ported to their platform

I think the guy means that not all people around the world have cheap internet connection on their mobiles.

right here, it's about $1.3/MB , or you can go for unlimited MBs plan for $80/month.

You're serious? Smartphone's with data plans based on MEGABYTES? How lame... Talk about not wanting people to even buy a smartphone.

They are of small for England. I have england mapped out on my Sony Ericsson and it's less than a gig. It's around 500mb.

It's definitely a decent enough size to help you around the country.

No google no. If you want to offer 'free gps' do it only on android, and screw apple and their app-approval mess.
#21.1 +Echilon on 28 Oct 2009 - 19:33
That goes against my interpretation of Google's philosophy. "Let's force people to buy android to use our apps" would make them no better than any other closed platform.

It's not really a closed platform, is it? My hopes would be for apple to realize how dumb they are.

Google wants your business, irrespective of the platform you're coming from

It's pretty scary, but also awesome that they're so aggressive at trying to dominate everything

Google tries so much of apps & business models...only few gets clicks and its worth too.
But for sure, they cant dominate too much into us, since they need to penetrate a long way..which i wont thing will ever happen.

And as always, Cloud can be used for just document or personal spreadsheet/pictures backup or sharing...we cant go with it 100%..

Eitherways..i am waiting for long to see Win mobile 7 with these kind of good apps!..lets see..

On to topic..this app looks good...want it on my win mobile & blackberry..hope it will happen

Please please allow us an easy way to download and preload maps.
#23 mattrobs on 29 Oct 2009 - 01:19
Worth noting that Apple wanted to implement turn-by-turn ages ago, but couldn't due to Google's licensing restrictions (which in itself was a restriction from the providers of the data). Good that they renegotiated!
(1 reply) #24 Nodiaque on 29 Oct 2009 - 02:39
Yeah good, it's free. Now add the data plan because you must download the map as you move around, giving me a big transfer fee. No thanks, I prefer my good tomtom/garmin with built-in map

Gotta pay to play. If you can't afford a smartphone and the data plan, then that's that.
(1 reply) #25 Gabe3 on 29 Oct 2009 - 04:50
I don't care about this unless you can have local map files for the country or state. They mention cached but I wonder to what extent.
#25.1 DSLJay on 31 Oct 2009 - 14:05
From my understanding, it will only cache your current route.

This is just another reason to go with Android. So cool and it's free unlike TomTom and other apps.
#26.1 guruparan on 29 Oct 2009 - 09:03
You must have unlimited data plan, also a good 3g coverage..else..you wont be shown the road ;-)

If you are gonna have limited data plan..better you stick with separate GPS unit.

I'm pretty sure it will be able to, at least, cache the maps on wifi before the trip.
#27 Razerblade on 29 Oct 2009 - 08:23
I Must say this looks really good! I really hope they release it to other platforms and to other parts of the world not just US. Just shows you dont need to pay loads of money for a great service! Just make sure you have an unlimited data package and its all good!!!!!!!!

#34 +Xerxes on 29 Oct 2009 - 21:23
Looks cool but I don't like how it relies on a data connection to be honest. While I understand why it's good thing, living in a country that charges like a wounded bull for data access it's not a good thing! (unless you can afford the hugh phone bills it will cause). Until Australia gets out of the technological stone age, I'll be forced to avoid stuff like this..which is sad. However, it's still cool
#35 deLanz on 30 Oct 2009 - 01:27
i think this google maps will be superior on Android than on Iphone just because the fact that Android can multitask. Imagine a ascenario if during driving, we need to access other phone function (lets say answering a phone call, handsfree of course), the gps app on Android just sits in the background, just waiting to be called again instantly, whereas on Iphone, the app needs to be closed and relaunch again.

Turn by Turn isn't. Maps with routes aren't. I think you've missed the point.

#39 BGM on 01 Nov 2009 - 16:02
well, this just made up my mind not to get ****ty built in nav for my next car!
#40 Mark_M on 02 Nov 2009 - 22:16
I have three Garmin nav units and it constantly ****es me off that no matter how up-to-date the map, Garmin's maps still are off by blocks in many residential areas and takes you on some of the most nonsensical routes ever known to man or dog. And, as a previous owner of both TomTom and Lowrance, I can tell you that neither of these brands are much better.

Conversely, Google finds my home address right on the dot (even shows the pool and camper in my backyard) and its routing literally saved me over a day of extra driving during a recent multi-stop, cross-country trip.

I, for one, welcome our new Google overlords. (Couldn't resist! :-) )
