This autumn, Neowin has several news poster positions available. If you have a passion for writing informative and inspiring news articles, Neowin might be the right place for you.

What are our expectations?
  • Be active: We require no less than 4 articles a week, but the more the better. We pay our writers per original article depending on the comments/hits. This won't replace your full time job, but is an easy way to earn extra cash for an MP3 player or copy of Windows 7.
  • We expect all articles to be originally written, we have strict guidelines for approvals. You must be proficient in English and grammar. We understand no one is perfect, but we do have high standards in order for a post to be approved on the main page.
  • You need to be able to bite your tongue when negative criticism occurs. It happens from time to time, but remember you represent Neowin on and off this site.
  • Although not mandatory, living near a convention/tech hotspot such as LA, Seattle, New York, or Tokyo would be a plus.

We do not assign people to different areas unlike other established news sources. Our writers will write from a variety of different categories.

Here's a general idea of what we cover here at Neowin:
  • Microsoft
  • Apple
  • Linux
  • Gaming
  • Software
  • Hardware
  • Gadgets
  • Mobile Devices
  • Editorials & Reviews
  • And anything else that's related to technology

If you feel you have what it takes to be a news reporter here at Neowin please send an application with the following:
  • Your forum name (If applicable)
  • Your full name
  • Your location
  • Your previous blog you have wrote for, paid or unpaid (If applicable)
  • A sample of your writing, preferably an article with at least 220 words

All applications should be sent to editors [at] neowin [dot] net. Please note that due to the volume of applications we receive, we may not be able to reply to you instantly. Please give us at least a week to reply to you.

Thanks and Good luck!

Seems like there's always a shortage of writers.... Too bad there's no shortage of mods, now that's something I would apply for

heh i was thinking the same thing.

Being a mod is a piece of cake. The only thing it needs is time and patience.

Being an editor is much harder.

I understand that....but I'm not much of a writer so I can't contribute that way

Writing 4+ articles a week is unrealistic unless it's a full-time position which pays accordingly. A shortage of quality writers isn't surprising.

youre kidding right? 4 250 word articles a week is a full time job? It takes me about 30 minutes to write something up for the front page, so your looking at about 2 hrs to make minimum requirements, make it three to compensate for new hires to get used to the system...its fun to write, its by no means work

Piece of cake... until you get hit with verbal abuse or are trying to be impartial in moderating.
#1.8 Pallab on 03 Nov 2009 - 06:54
That 4 articles/week clause is the deal breaker for me. I am a professional freelance writer, but I have college and stuff. There would be times when I won't be able to contribute for a week or two. 15 articles/month is much more reasonable IMHO.

rm20010 and impartial? lol. That's an oxymoron if I ever saw one!

... an easy way to earn extra cash ...

I'm not interested in the job, but just curious: how much? lol.
#2.1 PureLegend on 02 Nov 2009 - 22:54
Put it like this:
This won't replace your full time job
(1 reply) #3 Alladaskill on 02 Nov 2009 - 22:57
I'm a college student, mass media/communications & CS major(s), desperate for cash lol this could be fun. So I am curious as well about the pay. Any estimates or someone in charge with an answer?
#3.1 bdsams on 02 Nov 2009 - 23:00
you will make more money working 4 hrs a day at walmart, but I did it in college for beer and food on the weekend
#4 Alladaskill on 02 Nov 2009 - 23:23
Exactly. More is more,I am not concerned with how much more, just curious at the opportunity.
#5 Sazz181 on 02 Nov 2009 - 23:30
Good luck all who apply, it's always nice to see some new faces around

Well if all articles were purely exclusive to sites/services then I guess AP would put a whole lot of high profile journalist services out of business.
#7 Raa on 02 Nov 2009 - 23:42
Seems to be getting hard to find writers thesedays!

I was going to say good writers - but we have those
(1 reply) #8 lothodon on 02 Nov 2009 - 23:43
Four original articles a week eh? So where are all these articles now? Say you've got a staff of as few as five, that would put out at least 20 original articles a week. What I'm wondering is where I can find these original articles? I'd love a position such as this, however I don't need the money, nor do I live anywhere near a large metropolitan area.

Why would that be a recommended qualification by the way? Ever heard of this great invention called a plane?
#8.1 HolyOne on 02 Nov 2009 - 23:47
The words "not mandatory" should clearly indicate it is not a requirement. They're merely saying it would be a plus - and if you were to think about it without the smart ass comments, you'd see why it would be considered a plus. You'd also see why it's not exactly reasonable for your average Neowin writer to pay out of pocket for a plane ticket to some Tech Convention.

RIAAvsMPAA

Gregory Anthony "The Bird Eater" Smith Robinson

Las Vegas, Honolulu

I have written on many blogs. My favorite being the blog o' eggs where we all talk about ways to eat eggs.

Here is my snapple:
I like the fresh smell of water in the sink. How the drain makes me feel like a real woman, sensual and delighted at washing dishes for my man. When he comes home from a long day at work in the fields, I enjoy the shiny glistening of his forehead and the tender touch of his fist in my eye.
-- Example of writing a woman's novel

In the local news today... a man attacked a local mailbox in an attempt to retrieve a letter that contained a lock of hair from his long lost shag carpet. In further news, a machine gun toting toddler's plans for attacking the UN was thwarted when his profile was picked up by secret agents who determine how happy really are. When they thought the coast was clear, they nabbed the little tyke.
-- Example of news broadcasting

Menu items: Meatball Surprise $4.99, Fruit Smoothie $1.99, Crusty Cake $12.99
-- Example of menu writing skills

So, do I have the job?
#9.1 Glendi on 02 Nov 2009 - 23:58
Did you say 'shag carpet'?
#9.2 toadeater on 03 Nov 2009 - 01:35
Now that's exactly the kind of hard-hitting front page journalism we need around here.

Looking for more details on how writing works. Are writers required to find the stories? Does Neowin provide sources and then you write? Thanks

We can provide sources and lists to start you off, but yes, we usually like writers to work on their own to find sources/articles.

Every now and then if an editor or member comes across a news tip, we will let posters know, but that happens only occasionally.

The reason you don't have any writers is because you don't pay them nearly enough. Are they officially employed? What about minimum wage?

You need to pay writers on the time they spend working, not on how many comments or hits their article gets (that can be a bonus).

Good luck.
#11.1 Sazz181 on 03 Nov 2009 - 12:57
We have 14 writers at this moment, one or two of which are semi-active or away. And the pay is fine.

We've never had any complaint about the amount of money we pay our writers. We have guidelines in place to ensure everyone makes something off every article they write for us. If you'd like more information on the subject, please shoot us an e-mail and we'd gladly explain in detail.

I was very excited for applying to the selection some days ago, but I gave up. I'm afraid my articles wouldn't pass easily as I can be very provocative at times. But... I think I'm gonna try it once.
#13 +NeoSpam on 03 Nov 2009 - 01:31
I'm a decent writer, but not for tech stuff... I wouldn't even know where to begin...
#14 Digix on 03 Nov 2009 - 01:56
Well I've fired one away, going to give it a shot.
#15 Brandon on 03 Nov 2009 - 03:25
I'm interested, but would only have time to do maybe one per week?

I'm an editor for my college's newspaper too. Oh well.
#16 nickelslol on 03 Nov 2009 - 18:03
id love to do this but i think my dyslexia would make it really hard for me to submit 4 articles a week :/ kind of sucks

I applied, waited and got no reply on a yes or no. I would have thought a courtesy e-mail was appropriate either way!
