Fortune magazine has named Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, as "CEO of the decade".

In an article confirming the title, Fortune wrote:

"How's this for a gripping corporate story line: Youthful founder gets booted from his company in the 1980s, returns in the 1990s, and in the following decade survives two brushes with death, one securities-law scandal, an also-ran product lineup, and his own often unpleasant demeanor to become the dominant personality in four distinct industries, a billionaire many times over, and CEO of the most valuable company in Silicon Valley."

Jobs has certainly turned Apple around. Apple now dominates the MP3 player market with a range of iPod products and is well placed in the smart phone market due to increasing sales of the various iPhone editions. Mac sales and iPod sales remain strong despite difficult economic conditions. This quarter has seen Apple hit its best results in the history of the company, boasting a rather hefty $1.67 billion profit. Apple currently sits at position 5 in US computer sales, behind market leaders Dell and HP.

Fortune rounded off their article on "Why Steve Jobs?" by looking to the future. Now that Jobs has returned to his post as CEO following health issues, the question is what next? According to Fortune "given his penchant for secrecy and surprise and his proven brilliance, it's a fair bet that he'll let us know when he's good and ready."

Bill Gates should of got this title.. And the reason for that is that he's put a huge fortune of his own money into helping people while Steve Jobs isn't so generous.

But Bill Gates isn't a CEO anymore...
#1.2 +Smigit on 06 Nov 2009 - 08:57
Well he was at some point in the past decade. That said, Ballmers carried that position for most of it so I don't think Jobs is an unfair vote.

lol Are you really that blinkered and mean-spirited that you can't see Steve Job's entitlement to such a title? That's actually quite sad.

Apple Fanboy much!?!?!?! I would like to see what decisive factors where used to choose this, not that Jobs/Gates etc are not worthy of such a title, personally I reckon the CEO's of the Oil companies should of gotten it, they've made more per quarter this year then either have made all year

Uhh...the title is for CEO of the decade...not philanthropist of the decade.

I think Steve Jobs deserves the title....i mean he revitalized Apple and made it a force to be reckoned with in the tech industry.

iPods made mp3 players popular and the iphone made touchscreen GUI's much more intuitive than before. The iMac's and the Macbook's design have certainly been game changers in the industry too.

OSX is a good competitor to Windows and more competition means better stuff!

I've never owned a single Apple product in my forty years of life. I'm just old enough not to be blind to giving people credit where it is due. I don't see one person winning something as a betrayal to another person. It's a nonsense, really. There will always be people who are equally entitled but one person has to win it. What is so hard to grasp about that?

As another person has already pointed out, this is about CEO of the decade, not philanthropist of the decade. They are entirely different things.

All fine but where did I say that it was for philanthropist? My comment referring to you as a fanboy was purely based on your OP. I didn't suggest that it was hard to grasp as to why one person had to win, my query was in relation to the criteria used to assess the award.

If this was current, then sure why not?
But as for the decade, definitely Gates.

Why...
Steve brought Apple back up from the depths! What has Gates done that's worthy of such a title.

You mean after Gates saves Apple from bankruptcy in 1997?

No seriously, I only partially agree with you there.

The "decade" of Steve actually began in 1997, when he returned to Apple after having been ousted a dozen years earlier. That was a year of triage, of a humbling investment from Microsoft
#4.1 Jugalator on 06 Nov 2009 - 09:15
Your point being...? MS did very little to drive Apple to what it is today.

Apple may not have existed today if not for MS.
#4.3 Remote Sojourner on 06 Nov 2009 - 10:08
You are missing the point. MS had to invest in Apple. They couldn't allow their only competitor to die.
(1 reply) #5 Jugalator on 06 Nov 2009 - 09:14
I'm sure it's not a popular choice here, but I think it's deserved for turning around a company like he has done from a fear of bankruptcy to massive profitability. It's not even just about the Mac, but about the iPhone, and iTunes, which was rather revolutionary when released, the iPod for being the first music player with a hard drive in a pocket, and so on. I think he has done more for computing than Bill Gates, although Gates drove the larger company. This also shows up in the MSFT vs AAPL stocks. Jobs has gone beyond the confines of software, to the realms of hardware as well, and shown perhaps the most impressive success there.

Then your an idiot. It's not about what they use, but about why Jobs is the CEO of the Decade. Pull your head out of your bum.

Right. I'm the idiot...

If you're going to insult someone at least spell correctly (and get your head out of Steve Jobs' bum).
#7 njlouch on 06 Nov 2009 - 11:23
I personally say that the way he handled his personal health issues, not fully disclosing to the board, outright lying to the board, and then only disclosing some information before taking a leave of absence was a very poor way for a CEO to act.
#8 hotdog963al on 06 Nov 2009 - 11:32

"Period"? As in, yours is the only opinion that matters? That's a strange idea. Good luck with it.

Fortune are a proper magazine so they must have good editors. In that case, how on earth did they typo "EO" for "unt" ???
#11 still1 on 06 Nov 2009 - 14:23
Do steve job do charity????? If not he dont deserve it.
#12 java2beans on 06 Nov 2009 - 14:30
To be honest, Steve Jobs is not really a bad person. It's just Mac vs PC ads make him look pretty low.
#13 Shadrack on 06 Nov 2009 - 15:53
Apple popularized the digital music player this decade. That alone will keep them a-float for years to come, which makes investors happy.
#14 dimithrak on 06 Nov 2009 - 15:53
It is a really questionable decision from Fortune, but based of what that article had to say, it does show how well steve jobs has done in the lines of business from Apple to Next to Pixar to Apple and now even Disney.. he is a marketing genius!, and has tied into other industries other than just computers. Compared to Bill Gates, he has done quite a bit, even after getting fired from the company he founded. Philanthropy may not be apart of it, but then again, Fortune Magazine was never made to show people who do Philanthropy.. so based of that, Steve jobs deserved this

Well done Mr. Jobs!

CEO of the most valuable company in Silicon Valley.
Always good to start the day with a laugh.

No one can argue that Jobs hasn't been influential in technology and has accomplished some important things. And yes he brought Apple back from the brink of bankruptcy... but so did Microsoft when they cut Apple a cheque. I give Jobs credit for the things he deserves, but "CEO of the Decade" should go to someone worthy of the title. Someone who doesn't reek of his own arrogant superiority complex.

Like who? Most CEOs have an arrogant superiority complex. Most CEOs have driven their business into bankruptcy this past decade.

I think Jobs deserves it. Unless you can convince me that some other CEO does...

But your anti-apple commentary always gets a good laugh from me. Whether I agree or not.

I think both Steve Jobs and Bill Gates deserve the title. They are equally responsible for making computers what they are today. Both in different ways but we needed both of them. Steve for his innovation and Gates for bringing it to the masses.

I do not think Bill Gates deserves the title. Bill has only been CEO 1 year of the last 10. Bill resigned as CEO in January of 2000.

I agree with their choice based on the comment:
Fortune rounded off their article on "Why Steve Jobs?" by looking to the future.

Bill's future is not with Microsoft. He'll be on the board for a long time to come, but he's handed the reins off to pursue a more meaningful role in society through his foundation.

Way to go Steve, Fortune loves you!

Now if only the rest of us Microsoft fanboys could appreciate him in the same light.......

Let's not forget that Jobs is not only the CEO of Apple, but was CEO of Pixar as well before it merged with Disney.

I'm probably guilty of being a "Microsoft fanboi", myself. I'm reluctant to buy an iPod, still waiting to see if the Zune Marketplace will ever come to Canada (isn't THAT pathetic?). Even so, I think Jobs is arguably the industry's true visionary, that rare individual with an aesthetic sense as strong as his financial sense.
