Last week Microsoft rolled out a v4.3 firmware update for the Zune HD which amongst other improvements added support for 3D games. Today Microsoft has released 6 new games for the Zune HD according to HelloFromEurope.

Amongst the games is the highly anticipated PGR: ferrari edition and 3D bowling and 3D skate games. According to Microsoft:

"The new games take advantage of Zune HD's beautiful multi-touch OLED screen and accelerometer and some (Project Gotham Racing: Ferrari Edition, Audiosurf Tilt and Vans Sk8: Pool Service) utilize the powerful NVIDIA Tegra processor to deliver immersive, 3D gaming to Zune HD."

The games are available in the marketplace to download for free, as with other Zune apps they also feature a short ad at start-up.

I can't wait for them to open this up to indie games like they did with XBL. I suppose we'll have to wait for WinMo7 to hit first though?

XNA supports 2D games on the Zune and Zune HD. They just need to add 3D support and an indy section to Zune marketplace...

That's why I think they could do that later once winmo7 is close, or do it now and just add that to winmo7 later. Sooner would be better. Maybe we'll get a update to XNA first.

That won't happen unless someone creates a unified development platform like .NET or Java that would run on all phones.

Mono works with iPhone, so it's (almost) already there...

well this is just me thinking and guessing a bit but the zune os and windows mobile is probably quite alike when it comes to the coding of apps right?

now, considering MS have this quick guide for converting a iphone app to windows mobile i cant imagine why it would not be possible to do it the other way around...

also keep in mind audiosurf was originally pc so...

the one thing that i think could be a problem is the fact that all apps run in their own sandbox limiting access to anything outside the app itself, i don't know if it would be possible to make it so you could use your own music... though i am no app programmer so i don't know for sure

Zune HD runs Windows CE 6.0

I hope the AppStore doesn't get this. They have over hundreds of thousands of apps. Why do they need yet another? We want to be different and have a Zune HD, not have our stuff copied. You have Tap Tap Revenge, that's good enough. Plus, it's probably protected and wouldn't get to the AppStore because Microsoft has an agreement with AudioSurf.

Audiosurf is AWESOME. It does an incredible job at matching color and movement with the feeling of the song.

Very cool. Can't wait to get home to download these games. Looking forward to trying out PGR, Audio Surf, and Checkers. It would be cool if Microsoft developed a mail application. I think that application would give a huge boost for the Zune HD.

Since they've set the ground work now, I expect to see more apps come over in time.

Looks like some neat games. Thinking of getting one but they don't come in 120gb or any higher do they?
#5.1 darkmanx21 on 11 Nov 2009 - 20:38
Highest is 32gb.
#5.2 GP007 on 11 Nov 2009 - 22:09
Since they're flash based you won't see that size anytime soon. A 64GB version should come mid 2010 I think, depends on demand and sales though. But I can see them release it and stopping the 16GB. So you have basically 2 versions at any given time, any more and it'd be a cost issue probably.

32GB and 64GB for next year wouldn't surprise me at all.

AudioSurf is by far the best, but eats the battery the most.
