Microsoft Office 2010 beta available on MSDN/TechNet

Advertisement (Why?)
Microsoft has made the latest beta of Office 2010 available to MSDN and TechNet customers.

The release follows news that Office 2010 beta builds have begun leaking from the software giant.

It's widely expected that a public beta build of Office 2010 will be available this week. Microsoft has kept quiet on the reports but has hinted on the official Office twitter account "MS Office team has some exiting news to tell at PDC. This is a must attend event. Stay tuned!" and a follow up post hints at possible social networking features in Outlook, "would you like your inbox to talk to your social networks? Useful integration or distraction?". Stay tuned for all the PDC 2009 information as Neowin will be live in Los Angeles this week.

Update: The build 14.0.4514.1004 is available to MSDN/TechNet customers. 14.0.4536.1000 is the correct build number.

I do not think that Office 2010 is going to save your life...I would hang up and call 911 if you need medical attention

How u know what the build number is?

MSDN subscriber downloads show a file: en_office_professional_plus_2010_beta_x64_x16-19234.exe, but until it's down I don't know build number
#2.2 SoLoR1 on 16 Nov 2009 - 19:11
i just do someone posted screen with setup version 14.0.4514.1004. This means it has components from 1004-1009 aka same as wzor build from 3-4 weeks.

Well, duh. Every other version of Office in the past, including the betas, will not install if an older build is installed. At least (hopefully) people won't have trouble uninstalling it, like they did with the 2007 beta.
#5 EddiePwnsYou on 16 Nov 2009 - 19:21
ok its that retarded leaked build.
im not dieing anymore.
eff u ms! i expected a new build
#6 lee26 on 16 Nov 2009 - 19:29
If it's the same build then how come this doesn't ask for a key before installing unlike the leaked one?

now downloading........

Sounds like the previous "leak" is actually a newer build? (1009 vs 1004) Or perhaps just internal build numbering quirks?

Hurricane Andrew said,

Well the build numbers are 4514 and 4536 not the 4 digits at the end.
#9 rseiler on 16 Nov 2009 - 19:39
I understand that technical testers get interim builds (or at least they used to back in the days before technical testing was deprecated), but it doesn't make sense that technical testers would get 14.0.4536.1000 at the same time as a milestone build. I don't recall anything like that happening before in Windows or Office.
#10 Demitri on 16 Nov 2009 - 19:46

It's also the build of this official public beta.

Go to the Help page and it clearly shows that build number.
#11.3 rseiler on 16 Nov 2009 - 20:08
That would make sense. So Help/About shows one thing and the properties of the installer (where people are getting 4514) shows another? Office versioning is not in perfect sync across every Office component.

Guys, especially those of you downloading through connect - please remember you're all still under NDA, so cannot discuss ANYTHING you may find in this build
#15.1 Tom W on 16 Nov 2009 - 20:41
Umm not true. It's on MSDN/TechNet which is public.
#15.2 Adaytay on 16 Nov 2009 - 20:50
Ummm it says on Connect part of the NDA is still in force. MVPs are furious as they are contractually obliged not to discuss any part of this build, apart from what has already been disclosed on the Office website. And MS are seriously enforcing this.
#15.3 rseiler on 16 Nov 2009 - 21:02
Probably only until it's released (fully) publicly in a day or two, right? Otherwise it's ridiculous.
#15.4 Adaytay on 16 Nov 2009 - 21:06
Guess we'll have to wait and see wot happens...

Adaytay said,

Untrue; the NDA was lifted shortly after the TGech Pewview was made available (per posts on the newsgroups and the Office 2010 page on Connect itself). There's a post (from me) in the Windows Beta forum corroborating this.
#15.6 Darrian on 17 Nov 2009 - 02:40
I'm downloading it from Technet right now and did not have to agree to or even see a NDA. Sure, there was probably one on the Tech Preview, but this is a public build and not through Connect, so all that means if the NDA is still active is that I still can't talk about the extremely outdated Tech Preview build.

I have a question guys. I currently have Technical beta installed. I want to remove it and do a new/clean install of this beta. But I can't find the export option to export my account settings. I have about 6 email accounts configured and I want to export it so that I can simply import it later in my new install and don't have to bother with configuring the accounts from scratch.
Help...

Be warned that it appears the Technet version that supplies you with a MAK will not activate unless you're on a corporate LAN with an activation server running. The title bar of mine is bright red and says unable to activate. When I input the MAK key from Technet it says I need to connect to corporate network to activate.

#26.2 rseiler on 16 Nov 2009 - 23:59
That's strange. I know in the case of Win7 if you don't have that it falls back to allowing you to activate with the mothership. Maybe it's not enabled yet?
#26.3 +Chrono951 on 17 Nov 2009 - 00:44
This happened for me from MSDN. I simply clicked "Change Product Key" in the activation box, entered my new key and it opened the installer which configured office. Then, I re-entered office, clicked "Activate Now" and it activated perfectly.

#33.1 ManMountain on 17 Nov 2009 - 02:05
I only entered the single key which activates the entire Office 2010 Beta suite and had no problems.

Visio and Project still require their own keys and again, no problem with those either.

Did you have an earlier Office 2010 build installed?
#33.2 qdave on 17 Nov 2009 - 02:08
I have the same problem as well. strange.
#34 Pharos on 17 Nov 2009 - 03:54
I don't like it. There's way too much going on, the titlebar with the glass and the white effects are quite distracting, I didn't see overlay notifications for Outlook on my superbar, the icons look horrible. I also hated the scrollbars and the overall grey look, it doesn't stand out from the rest of the application, the new Home or File menu is pretty confusing. This is going to frustrate a lot of people. =\
So, yeah.. I REALLY didn't like it. I hope the final build has a better theme.

I guess they are the same, the installer is 4514 but some of the apps are marked 4536.

#37.1 ManMountain on 17 Nov 2009 - 15:04
All of the Office 2010 applications are build 14.0.4536.1000, as are additional applications such as Visio.
#38 bomberh on 17 Nov 2009 - 14:34
Played with it, especially Outlook. Don't like the feel of it, looks like they have gone backwards with the look and feel of the programs. Nice icons!! Don't like it that much, gone back to Office 2007.
I don't think I will try any of the future updates, beta wise, I will wait to RTM and make an informed decision then.
Not good enough yet, school report states, "good do better".
#39 boe on 17 Nov 2009 - 15:59
Nothing beneficial for most businesses – no reason to upgrade/purchase –

Like Vista – all bling – no function.

If they wanted to improve Office they SHOULD have -
1. Made outlook open multiple e-mail accounts as full exchange -not an additional mailbox with some functionality or pop/imap with very limited functionality but two seperate exchange profiles simultaneously from multiple exchange servers.

2. Full OLE support for pictures in access – umm wasn't that functional with Office XP – why take that out? Why should someone have to code to add pictures to a personal database? Might was well use oracle or a real database if you are going to have to use code. Adding Office XP photo editor is the work around but why not just add photo editor back into office if that is the solution?

3. Offer the old menu bar for people (most of my clients) who don't want to learn the new menu bar. You can finally modify the ribbon to some extent in 2010 however my clients just want their old ribbon bar. Frankly I have no issue with the new menu bar but I'm one person and most of my clients don't like it so prefer to stick with office 2003. MS could make money selling the new version if they just offered the old menu as a choice with the new ribbon.

Downloaded and tried the 64BIT, outlook is slow (again...?) and then search does not work no matter what I do... went back to office 2007 which is a breeze on my 4 GB XPS M1530 with Windows 7 64BIT.
