Samsung to launch bada mobile OS

With the mobile smart-phone market already highly saturated with devices and operating systems, it seems as though that isn't enough of a deterrent for Samsung. The technology giant has announced bada, the next mobile operating system for smart phones.
According to the Official bada website, "Samsung bada is a new open platform that enables rich user experience in applications on Samsung mobile devices." Samsung's bada website also states that they have developed bada "to deliver simple, intuitive and innovative user experiences through innovative design."
Consumer demand for smart-phones that can allow users to stay connected to the Internet, watch videos, post to social networks and perform the tasks they normally would via personal computer is at an all time high. Apple's iPhone is clearly the most sought after device when it comes to pocket computing and Samsung is looking to get their slice of Apple's pie.
Some of the key features of the bada platforms include integrated support for service-oriented features to develop connected applications as well as extensible core functions of the operating system which bada applications can access freely.
Bada is set to launch it's developer site in December of 2009. The questions are will developers adopt this new platform and is bada going to provide something different for users in the already crowded mobile market.

Perfect example of something totally unnecessairy. We have WinMo, Android, S60, iPhone OS if it counts, J2ME-phones, ... And the name sounds really childish in my opinion... Highly doubt if it'll ever kick off.
toadeater - 30 November 2009 - 23:27
There is zero chance of it taking off.

+1 too much competition out there to kick off! though, competition is always good

Well, I'm going to hold off and see what it looks like before I make a premature decision on the matter. It may target a niche, or be exceptional... Who knows. I'm just curious about what this means at this point though.

I'm really tired of all those OSes out there, waiting to see if they could really introduce something evolutionary.

I disagree, if it's good it will fly.
I'm being increasingly impressed with android 2 though, that will be hard to beat for sure, Id just like to see more phones with it on uk carriers.

It doesn't matter if its good or bad. It will take off either way. Because Samsung will put it on their phones. People will buy their phones, and thus it will take more of the market. It might not have a huge fanbase but as long as samsung pushes it with their phones. Nothing is going to stop it from taking off.
@ Ambroos Don't forget Maemo

some competition is good, over-saturation is extremely bad and leads to confusion. See: Linux distros, Video Games Crash of the 80s.

Considering the insane profits and massive market share increase Samsung enjoying I wouldn't dismiss them, they have an enormous R&D budget.

Maemo? Its the closest thing to a real desktop OS we can get right now. Also android + Sense = very cool.
Glendi - 30 November 2009 - 22:57
I'm looking forward to it actually. Not all of the mobile OS are neccesary, so why should this one be neccesary. Let alone that you don't even know what potential it has.

"bada" means in polish, that he or she is testing, checking something
M_Lyons10 - 30 November 2009 - 23:36
I see. I still don't get it as a name for a Mobile OS though... Thanks for the translation though.
westling - 01 December 2009 - 06:36
bada is also the Swedish word for taking a bath, but I think the logic would presume that it's the polish one ^^
Will be interesting to see what this turns out into, would be cool if it was really easy to develop for, say that a webdeveloper would manage to build something right out of the knowledge of say flash, AIR or javascript.

Maybe they are planning on partnering with Microsoft for search, giving us "Bada Bing". LOL
M_Lyons10 - 30 November 2009 - 23:35
I'm curious about this, but I'll wait and see. I'm going to guess that they'll be carrying over the widgets engine they have for several of their other phones to this new "Bada". They've invested a lot in that, and actually opened it up to developers recently as well. I like Samsung but I'll have to see what comes of this to be honest. I really like their support of Windows Mobile...

I like Samsung and their products. I hope that this OS turns out to be really good. The more competition the better things get for the end consumers. That's what I think, anyway.

Probably a poor judgment on their behalf moving away from tried and trusted solid Symbian, ahwell. Learn the hard way I guess. At least Nokia will make good use of it.
