Facebook launches new privacy controls

Facebook announced last week that they will be revamping the way the current privacy controls are laid out to all of the 350 million Facebook users worldwide. Today Facebook launched their new, simpler interface to every Facebook user, asking users to look over their settings before continuing.

Users will be prompted when they login to adjust their privacy controls within three different categories. The new concept will limit what each person can share, preventing users from sharing pictures and videos with everybody, limiting them to 'friends of friends', while private information such as email, phone numbers and addresses will remain 'friends' only.

However, Facebook will try to encourage users to share their information such as: about me, family and relationships, work and education and posts.

Users can still keep their old privacy settings, or go back into the privacy settings and fully customize who can access parts of their profile.

Facebook has asked users for their feedback one week before making changes to the privacy controls and will continue to seek feedback after the changes have been made. Users should note that this does not change or modify the privacy policy, which was a controversial change back in February, that granted Facebook full permissions over your uploaded content and later reverted back to the old Terms of Service.

Facebook has made these changes to their website as Microsoft and Google are increasing growing interesting in adding live feeds to their search engines, using information from Twitter and Facebook.

Yesterday Facebook changes the Fried list issue. Now if u uncheck the checkbox, friends can see it and non-friends can't, just as whe ask

But now, te Notes box are visible to everybody

I am giving serious consideration to closing my FB account.

One other thing. If your profile is "hidden" from the search, and if you had previously some one on your friends list you deleted, they can still find you and your friends in their search results.

FB's "privacy" feature is total crap!

Now you cant hide the friends list :-(
This is now less secure than before.

yup
i keep my friends separate cause certain ppl dont like eachother

and now facebook has literally DESTROYED any sense of safety and privacy on the site
they deliberately lied and added a new UI to cover it up

You can hide it from everyone by editing it on your profile but its not like before where you could just hide it from certain people.

I have the same problem. I am unable to hide my friends list from certain people I'd prefer don't see it and there's not setting to change it in the new privacy settings. . . . . I did go to my profile and click the pencil on the friends box there and clicked "hide my friends on my profile" and then went to view my profile as a friend would and the friends list didn't appear but I'd like to choose and be able to see who can specifically see it and who can't.

Also I find it irritating that every time I 'like' some thing now, it shows up on my wall that I liked some thing... SO i have to delete it every time.

Also had exactly the same problem.
I chose to display my profile as another registered user not in my friend list is supposed to see, and was horrified to see he could see all the content of my wall and my friend list (which is unacceptable from my point of view).
I spent one hour browsing the parameters and searching the net without success.

Then I logged out and logged in again, and then did the same exact manipulation... And now it seems my profile is like it was before, not visible from strangers.

Could you guys having the same problem have a look and check if this solves your problem?
Best regards.

According to some comments in the "complain list" it could also be a bug being corrected. Wait and see...

Hope so.. A workarround is to hide friend list from your profile and change your profile picture to another

I tried viewing my profiles* from outside Facebook - and even *I* can't view them. If I can't view my own profiles from outside, then you guys can't see mine either.

That alone means that my privacy settings worked effectively. *grin*

*No, you don't need to have your eyes checked ... there's a 's' at the end - I actively have 2 - one for hearing friends and one for deaf friends. I keep those 2 groups separate for personal reasons AND I don't want to hear a word from any of you guys about "needing to combine the two groups because [insert ridiculous reason here]" or any of that BS.

I suspect some of the privacy changes have to do with the fact that they're bowing to pressure from Canada...

The Privacy Commissioner ruled in the summer time that Facebook violated a number of Canadian Privacy Act stipulations, and Facebook promised to remedy the situation.

that is some to do with it, but Canada was aimed at getting them third-party apps to tell the user what information will be gathered when installing.

There is a big serious bug on that new privacy. Now everybody can see my profile picture, my friends, and even my wall. Yep, i'm not newbie and i already check all options (including the new Wall privacy)

I'm not the only one who report this:

Chien-Wei Jeff Huang
I've been trying to hide the Wall, Friend Lists, and Pages to non-friends without avail. I'm pretty sure they were hidden before I went through the Transition Tool, and now I can't find the control to hide them

Tracey Cisney Schofield
@jennifter, not on my page you can't. I can opt out of being on a FB search altogether, and remove myself from public indexes, but NOT hide my friend list.

Braden James
yeah, great f---ing job. now EVERYONE who isnt EVEN MY FRIEND can see my profile. this is ridiculous. im not an idiot, ive searched thru all the settings FOR OVER AN HOUR and now FRIENDS of mine WHO I DID NOT want seeing stuff can now see stuff. I HAVE TRIED blocking them and customizing them and now all my sh-t is exposed.

Flavio P
Unfortunately the new settings do not include an important privacy option that existed before: the possibility to hide our own friends list to some people or lists! I find it a big violation of my own privacy: I chose to hide my friends list from some groups of people who could just access the mutual friends, now they can see my whole list. Please reintroduce this option ASAP!

Sabrina Haider
i kept the old settings, according to which anyone who wasn't my friend could see nothing. but now they can c everything!!! this is worse!

Malang Por
NON friends see my wall , this is NOT SECURE !!!!!

Sumi Tarina
More Privacy ???????????????????????????? its NON SENSE !!!
WE CANT HIDE friends anymore and STRANGER can see my POST !

The list of complains about this issue is growing

Verley Keymer
NOT HAPPY my settings r set to only friends and some non friends can see everything also set search to only friends and some non friends can still find me !! WTF sort it out !!

Kelsey Self
these new privacy settings are worse!!! i don't want anyone except people that i add to be able to see that i have a profile!! you made it worse facebook! no one should be able to see my friends but me, and there needs to be a setting so that NO ONE can add you as a friend. as of now, the only options that "everyone" or "friends of friends" can add me as a friend. i don't want to be asked to be added by anyone!!! not even friends of friends!!!! grrrrr facebook

Aleksi Eeben
Also I did not give a permission to show my complete friends list to all my friends. Please correct.

Amanda Alcantara
GOSSH FACEBOOK PLEASE CHANGE THIS BACK! I CANNOT HIDE MY PROFILE PICTURE FROM PEOPLE WHO DON'T KNOW ME AND NOW THEY CAN SEE EVERYTHING ON MY WALL....I SWEAR IM GOING TO DELETE MY FACEBOOK NOW

Kelcey Patrick-Ferree
These new settings are not very private. So far as I can tell, they decrease privacy. Not good.

Lol. It seems they didn't try it at chance. Or maybe they did? Well... the point is, that this is happening and is happening now.

Has anybody tested the new privacy settings, and worked?

There is a "View my profile" button and it show you how people see your ptofile. Also, i send my profile ID to a co-worker that i don't have him as friend and he was able to see ALL (he must be logged in to see it)

Yep, i check with another co-worker account (not my friend on Facebook) and I can see all his stuff

You can go back to the old settings at the top,
Settings > Privacy Settings

Do what? That page has been updated now, at least for me it has.

The Wall bug appear to be fixed now. I click on "Everybody" and then "Just my friends" and it does not appear public anymore. I try the same with my profile picture and friends with no luck

"Users should note that this does not change or modify the privacy policy, which was a controversial change back in February, that granted Facebook full permissions over your uploaded content."

Actually this policy was changed back Facebook do not own your content and if you fully close your account it will be deleted.

Thanks. I didn't intentionally write it to come off that way, but could see how it can be confusing. I updated the post to make the article more clear.

No probs nice change

I like it, i like it. The Privacy options have always been a bit of a maze!

Does anyboday know if this will also work in Facebook lite?

Is there an option which would allow to block a user completely? Once blocked, that user can never access my profile.

Yes, in normal Facebook, if you go to settings, then privacy settings,
down the bottom it says about blocking people. There you can type the email address or the username of the person you want to block.

I thought Google just set the standard for privacy last week by saying only criminals care about privacy... humm facebook must support criminals

Did Google really say that? Wow! How misinformed is the person who made that statement? Actually, people who wish to be safe also care about their privacy.

Why would I want people I do not know to know where I live and my exact location? You don't know what anybody is capable of, so I'd rather only the people I somewhat trust know such information.

First story I found on it

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/12/07/g...f_n_383105.html

I wasn't given the page to update my settings, despite logging on 3 times!

Maybe my settings are already a higher level than the new proposed defaults ones
