Man killed after phone explosion

An exploding mobile phone battery apparently killed a South Korean man in the first such known case in this gadget-obsessed country, police say.

The man, identified only by his family name Suh, was found dead at his workplace in a quarry Wednesday morning and his mobile phone battery was melted in his shirt pocket, a police official in Cheongwon, 135 kilometers (85 miles) south of Seoul, told The Associated Press.

"We presume that the cell phone battery exploded," the police official said on condition of anonymity. The official said the phone was made by South Korea's LG Electronics, the world's fifth-biggest handset maker.

If you read the latest news on CNN, the guy was killed by a co-worker who accidently backed up a vehicle. Not by a battery explosion as previously reported.

I think the Editor or the ED who ever it is needs to be carefull before making any assumptions or know the facts before making any public comments.

The phone didn't kill him:

"After further examination, and perhaps a little common sense, it turns out the battery didn't break the man's spine and ribs."

Nothing to see here people, move along.

The full article is full of "if" and "maybe". Just because they found a penknife in a body's pocket doesn't mean he was stabbed to death.

EDIT: Updates to the story elsewhere like Reuters indicate the man had massive internal organ injuries that a burn from the cell phone could not have caused. More than likely since he was found in a quarry he fell and landed on the phone causing the battery to leak or short.

I think the moral of the story is, "Don't carry a cell phone in your shirt pocket."

Of course, if he had it in his pants front pocket, he may have lived but then wished he was dead.

LG phones are so good that they can scare you to death. (by exploding) Its like that spider who can kill you just by looking at you.
