Microsoft and Toshiba Developing New Xbox?

According to the technology guide Smarthouse, Microsoft and Toshiba may be working on a new Xbox "Entertainment Hub" edition. This new device could possibly add on to the current Xbox 360 specifications with a built-in HD-DVD player, HD TV tuner, and a MP3 player docking port (perhaps using the Zune docking pin setup?).

Quote -
The device is being developed in response to the PS3 driving sales of games software and Blu-ray content in several countries. A recent Sony Brand Wave study conducted in five countries including the UK, Australia, France Germany and Spain revealed that a key reason that consumers are buying a PS3 is because it includes a Blu-ray player.

The article goes into more detail on the device and suggests that they expect it to be released late 2008 or early 2009.

If they release the HDDVD Xbox360 for only a marginal increase in price and drop the price of the regular Xbox, they could seriously get the upperhand over the Wii and PS3. Assuming Microsoft plays everything right of course (which they haven't been doing much lately).

This reminds me of that Panasonic Q, that GameCube that could play DVDs. If only they actually made more than a handful of them...

Isn't Toshiba (along with Sony & IBM) the ones that developed the Cell Processor? And isn't the Cell Processor just an evolution of the powerpc architecture which the Xbox 360 currently uses? Next Xbox making the switch to the Cell Processor?

Heh, I know it probably won't ever happen...just thought I'd throw some extra fuel into the flames

Yes they were. I think Microsoft will see how developers like dealing with Cell on PS3 before deciding on anything like that though, and right now - afaik people aren't liking it :P

Yeah, um, I don't like working on titles for PS3. No support from S...

It would be a pretty neat idea if Toshiba releases a media hub like this, and as a secondary capability, it could play X360 games. Thus, not being explicitly under Microsoft's name, it wouldn't directly hurt their system, but let their market grow.

depends, if they included a hd-dvd drive with only a minimal price increase then loads of ppl would buy 1, but if they only give a 20% off the price the standalone hd-dvd drive + 360 then it just wont.

@ David3k

I understand what torrentthief meant just fine, perhaps you should re-read his sentence but this time a little slower.
He means that if they release a 360 with a HD-DVD drive included for a marginal increase above the console's current cost, then lots of people would buy it. However if the discount is less than 20% of the current cost of the console plus the hd-dvd player, then people wont.

a key reason that consumers are buying a PS3 is because it includes a Blu-ray player

And one of the reasons people an Xbox 360 is because its cheaper without a HD DVD drive.
Although releasing a SKU with a HD DVD drive would greatly benefit MS because people can choose - whereas they are forced to with the PS3.
