Microsoft announces 8 million Kinect units sold, 50 million Xbox 360's sold

Today Steve Ballmer took the stage tooting the success Microsoft last year, prompting good sales of the Xbox 360 Kinect, Windows Phone 7, Office 2010, Office 365, Bing and their Azure services. 2010 was a big year for Microsoft, as they unveiled and launched the new Xbox 360, a slimmer, built-in WiFi adapter, Kinect for the Xbox 360, multiple features that were added to the Xbox over the summer, including an updated dashboard, and the successful sales of Office 2010.

Microsoft demonstrated the power of the Xbox 360 Kinect, with a controller-free experience. Microsoft showed off how easy it is to control videos, audio and even games with just the movement of your hand. Microsoft went on to announce Netflix will soon receive an update for Kinect, allowing you to browse, playback and rent movies and TV shows with just your hands, no controllers.

Xbox 360 isn't only just for gaming and videos, but now live sports events. Xbox LIVE will feature an ESPN app to watch live sports in HD. Microsoft also announced the college bowl leaderboards, so you can battle against your friends by betting on games and scoring points on your predictions.

Kinect will be receiving some very cool applications in the near future, with apps that can track your facial expressions, including your smile, frown and eye brows, giving your avatar emotions.

Microsoft went on to announce that they have sold 50 million Xbox 360's to date, and surpassed their expectations of Kinect sales with 8 million units sold since launch two months ago.

Bloomber Tech Report Dina Bass got a clarification on the numbers from Microsoft by tweeting that, "Microsoft has clarified to me that the 8 million KInect number is sell in, or how many were shipped to retailers. Not sell thru." Microsoft told her that it "far surpassed" the previous 5 million sold thru but wouldn't give exact numbers. How close Greenberg's "essentially the same #" statement is to reality is currently unclear but Bass points to his statement as evidence that "pretty much all of them have been sold thru."

Like I said no manufacturer has the ability to know exactly how many unit they have sold to consumers in ANY field of electronics. Whether MS has Kinects on the shelf is a different story and can be argued.

Actually they do, that the stuff you just quoted even says so. it's just that the sold-thru numbers take a bit longer to get because they need to be back reported from stores, to HQ to Distributor and then to MS.

You're making a fuss about nothing, say the 8million is sell-in number, they bit you posted says they've far exceeded the 5million sell-thru number which is the one to customers, so in the end kinect is a huge success regardless of how you're trying to downplay it with this non-argument.

If it connects to the internet, you can (though, yes, some Xboxes aren't hooked up, so it would be an underestimate)

I was not trying to downplay Kinects success in any way. I was annoyed with some of the post I saw depicting microsoft as this nicer than average company. When in fact they're the same as any other who have to report the highest numbers possible to make themselves look good, and please their shareholders.

WOW I can't believe the fanboy-ism on this site in the last couple of months. MS reports sold, and Sony those big liars only report shipped? are you kidding me!

Every company reports shipped to retailers. There is no way for the manufacturer to know how much they have sold.

Nice try, but MS reports Sold.

Both used to report units sold until Sony realized no one was buying the products they were shipping to stores, so they started lying.

I'm sure you're still upset by the total disaster that Playstation Move was, but you'll just have to get over it.

Sad that 8 million people have fallen victim to a gimmick that will bring nothing but "hd" clones of the crappyness that has flooded the wii for the past 4 years. Oh well, i guess those people will discover it the hard way soon enough.

You seem to be in your own little world. The Kinect is nothing like anything that has ever been available for the Wii. If you're just referring to player avatars, then yes they are boring by themselves, but it's everything else that is making the Xbox 360 a solid platform at the moment.

was there always hulu plus for xbox? also i think they should get hulu included in live price

Where does it say anything about Hulu, or was that in a separate arcticle? And no, Hulu hasn't made it to the 360 yet.

BTW, I agree about Hulu being included in the price.

Sold or shipped.... I don't know if to trust that number... although that may be true. *sigh*. Not that I don't trust MS, but Neowin....

MS is not Sony, They always say the number that are sold not shipped. Only Sony.

If that's so, then I'm quite surprised . They told that they were expecting to sold (at initial release) about 4 million units (correct me if I'm wrong), and it seems that the sales have been doubled.

Good job, MS, keep it up.

MS's numbers are usually sold. Unlike Sony who reports shipped.

5 million expected. But 8...WOW!

Exactly. I didn't expect them to reach 5 million when they first announced their expectations (though I was open to them possibly being right), but to sell more than 50% more than what you expected is quite impressive.
