Microsoft bets $100 that Windows Phone will smoke your device

It's that time of the year that hundreds of thousands of people head out to Vegas to see what the gadgets will be on sale in the coming year. While this may be Microsoft's last year at the venue, the Windows Phone team is out and about challenging individuals to prove that Windows Phone is better than every other OS on the market.

To do this, @BenThePCGuy will be offering up a $100 bet that Windows Phone will smoke your current device. While the challenge does not say specifically how it will play out, if your device wins, you get $100, if you lose, well, you have to admit to them that you got smoked by Windows Phone.

The team has put together a video (posted below) that gives a little bit more information about challenge. It should be an interesting event seeing as the challenge is relatively wide open and there is no limitation on what devices you can use to challege the team.

Good for you, try hard resetting your phone while your out and have the phone pull all your contacts out of the cloud, oh, right, WM6.5 HAS to sync with outlook to get ALL of your contacts back onto your phone. Try unlocking straight to the camera and posting an image to Facebook then, oh, sorry, WM6.5 can't do that. Try using Local Scout to see whats in your area, oh, right, that's only on Windows Phone. Try connecting your phone to your PC and do an update check, oh, right, WM6.5 doesn't get any updates.

Looks like I just smoked your phone, now where's my $100.

I bought a wp for the same reason i bought my car - im not going to want to fiddle around with the guts to make it nice... I buy it already good.

You catch my drift?

^This.

Exactly why I dislike Android.

I'm generally curious about these kind of responses. Can you be realistically honest, and specific, about what you don't like? Each to their own, right? I rather like WP7, but I don't hate Android or iPhone. My reasoning is basically that I don't find Android or iPhone in the least bit exciting, but WP7 I do, a little, and I happen to like the way it looks, works and feels in a very general sense.

So what's wrong with WP7 from your perspective? In what kind of scenario is an iPhone/droid device so superior that you feel so strongly against WP?

Whats so bad about it? All ive seen of these phones is speed, simplicity, quick access ect ect.

You do realize of course that by simply stating "MS will beat Droid, and 100 dollars to prove it" is pretty much WHAT MS wants for people to "discuss" the possibility, even if it's false. MS STILL Wins.. more customers, better advertising (where else can you get ads for 100 bucks?) people WILL show up, and lose (maybe) but they WILL end up with a FREE WP7.. so who REALLY wins here?

The carrier AND MS, they will GLADLY give away $20,000 dollars because this will mean MILLIONS a few weeks later... MS does what they do best: HYPE!

I love how people are saying that MS is advertising. ITS ABOUT TIME!!!! Apple has managed to indoctrinate a whole generation through patience. People buy $500 laptops and then get angry when they break and then fork out for a $2000 mac and say how much better it was than their $500 PC. Anyways look at Xbox, it took Microsoft many years to get to the top and now they are. The Windows Phone will be the same.

As everyone keep pointing out, this is an shameless publicity stunt. That's what MS seem to be all about at the moment. Yes, it would be nice if that wasn't necessary but the truth of the matter is that any company with a tarnished reputation, or suffering from horrendous, even degenerate levels of bias from fans of the competition in spite of the fact that they've created a perfectly viable product would resort to such tactics. You can interpret it as desperation if you like, and that may be true, but I think it's more fair to say that it's a necessary part of an underdog marketing campaign. If WP7 has speed as a strength, especially in spite of lackluster hardware specifications, that's as good a thing to shout about as anything. Of course it can be done a little over-zealously...

Nothing MS have done is unusual for a company in their position, and the effort they've put into producing a new and interesting product is certainly no good reason to start horrifically overrating pre-existing, competitive devices.

WP7 looks rather different to Android and iPhone, where the latter work and look quite simliar. Credit where it's due, MS have made something unique. WP7's visuals are unusual and therefore they provide more for people to dislike, or find uncomfortable, but they also provide enough for many people to love. Last I looked, Android doesn't look particularly pretty, and the iPhone looks really quite dated now. Credit where it's due, Android and iPhone have a familiar look that makes more people 'comfortable', but I find it hard to believe anyone is particular excited about how they look, at least not since the iPhone was first released and blew everything away.

In the spirit of competition, shouldn't we all encourage new products, at least until they're proven to be largely disliked? That doesn't appear to be the case for WP. Not yet...

Who the hell cares if a phone is a little faster. Just a gimmick to get the weak minded to buy a Windows device. Its faster? WOW...MUST be a better device! More than just a little better speed that draws people to buy something.

And I doubt in cases where WP is faster, it will be that significantly faster.

I want the things I do most on my phone to happen as easily and seamlessly as possible. If I'm doing a task on a phone which adds up to wasted hours versus invested minutes, guess which phone I'll want as my day to day.

A few seconds faster is not wasted hours. It takes more than just a few seconds saved to make me want to purchase something. I look at the over all functionality of a device and what I can do with it. Companies/people are so worried about the speed of something that it takes away from the other devices features or what else they can do with the device.

This is a gimmick, nothing more...nothing less. MS hasnt been doing well in the phone market so they have to think of different ways to get people to look at their devices and get them interested.

The BS in #2 would be the only thing working in their favor as it changes the dynamic of the phone, a 3G data connection is the real world speed of the device a 4G hotspot is not and as such my Nexus 4G would smoke any WP7 device in a real head to head test.

So stupid. Put us on equal footing. By the time I upload my pic to Twitter from my zero shutter lag G-nex on my 4G LTE. You'll be ready to share it on your WP. But either way, it is better to lose and sell the Windows Phone to a fanboy on this site. They will love the phone and you make more than $100. Win-Win!

I lost count of how many times you've said "zero shutter lag" in your posts. Seriously, is that the only thing you can highlight about your phone? You know what I have that beats your phone? A Canon EOS 60D with EF 24-105 f/4L, EF 70-200 f/2.8L and a 430EX II.

Yeah and it shows that he is talking completely out of his arse. Zero shutter lag would mean that the very instant the button was pressed it took the picture no delay, not even a milisecond.

So, unlocking your phone, opening the camera app on your "zero shutter lag G-nex", taking a photo and opening the Facebook app to share it is quicker than pressing a dedicated camera button WHILE THE SCREEN IS OFF, taking a photo and sharing it to facebook straight after taking it from within the camera app.

Unlock straight to camera. Share the image taken to Facebook. No you don't have to open facebook to share. Glad I cleared that up for you. I have a G-Nex which is built into ICS.

Takes money to make money. As far as they're concerned at this point, it's a new business for them. It's like when they first got into consoles with the XBox. They didn't make money off of that for YEARS. Microsoft seems to be perfectly O.K. with being in it for the long haul...

Just like google paying television manufacturers to use android.
That google money better be more than microsoft's IP licenses.

It's not desperate, it's excellent marketing whereby they will show that their device accomplishes tasks faster, which was the intent with the redesign.
Proving to the world using man's inherent greed as the impetus rather than the emotional response to Metro is a great way to promote a superior product.

Microsoft makes money from licensing the Windows Phone OS and they are not the first to provide sales incentives for sales reps.

still1 said,

Advertising isn't desperation. It is an attempt to reach new customers to sell your product to. If advertising was only for the desperate then you wouldn't have Coca Cola advertising Coke when they have been the #1 soft drink for almost a century. If it was only for the desperate you wouldn't see Apple advertising the iPhone when they are #1 in the US market. If it was only for the desperate you wouldn't see Google paying developers to bundle their search as Default as they just paid Mozilla $300 Million to do for Firefox while they are still the #1 search engine in the US.

Your argument doesn't hold. Advertising isn't a sign of desperation. It is done to gain you new customers. That doesn't matter if you have 1% of the market or 99% of it.

What else will they be testing? Is there a app that is available to both WP and Android that will take the same test so that we can compare results?

Plus, if you lose, you get a free Windows Phone.

Not really. I have an app that uses voice actions for that. You would say post to twitter and status and it is there. Also, taking a pic and posting to twiter or fb the G-Nex would win. I got an LTE Phone because I am in a LTE Area. Vegas has LTE. The Android folks who are in the CES conference have not complained about their 4G LTE G-Nex.

Also, 1 tap to make a call. 1 Tap to post to twitter/facebook via voice actions. Two taps if I want to type it (which is what I usually do.)

Adding a contact is not something I do everyday on my phone. When I do add a contact, it is through my exchange account, which by the way is synced to my phone.

This so-called "challenge" is about things you do day-to-day. Here is what I do with my phone on a normal work day (from most widely used to least):

1) I tether to my laptop (That's why I need 4G LTE). - Windows Phone fails on that test.
2) I read my Twitter (Not post). I have a widget that fills my home screen. One swipe to the left and I am reading. No app launched.
3) I take pictures when I am out on the field. My Google+ Account automatically syncs my pics to a private album. So when I am back at my desk, I can open it up.

Yeah, this contest is a publicity stunt. No more no less. And trust me, if I were there I would take the challenge and purposely go slow so I could win a Windows Phone and sell it to the Microsoft Fanboys on this site. Everybody will be happy.

So do I, it's called Ziggy. Also, it doesn't matter how fast your data speed is because once you send the picture off, you are no longer concerned about it until you start to get comments. I can guarantee that your G-Nex can go from sleep, directly into the camera, take a shot, tag someone, and post to Facebook faster than a Windows Phone

Also I have a Samsung Focus got to tell you, battery life isn't THAT good either, in fact before I ditched my phone (I still have the hardware) I couldn't get through the day on a single charge.. even with my droid (no external battery) using it more, with LTE enabled and on Wifi I STILL get more life than Wp7 did (does). So if they are comparing batter I wouldn't bet theirs would be more efficient than mine...

That's because he actually uses his phone. There's simply nothing to do with with a WP.

We shouldn't have to carry around an extra battery, or make excuses for a phone's poor battery life. We should be demanding better battery performance.

I wanted a Galaxy Nexus. So bad that I was willing to pay the $300 for it, but when I read reviews that stated that the battery drained a 1% per minute while using 4G LTE, and it even drained a bit less than that while on a car charger, I filed that idea away.

But I bet Microsoft has sane terms there.

Good luck to all who give it a go.

I do admit I was thinking about getting a WP7 back then, but I went with an iPhone cause it would suit me best.

It's great to see that Microsoft has created an good UI and a snappy OS and a decent eco system coming from Windows Mobile.

Great work, maybe one day I'll have a WP7 just to play with, cause they are niceee.

Whatever the test is I'm sure they have tested it on all devices, giving out a shed load of $100 isn't going to bankrupt MS but the shame of loosing would be bad.

yes and across the board maybe me and a few of us in this form will take their 100 bucks (and be BANNED from future contests) because we would make them look bad, overall it's a marketing ploy by MS, the average user would lose this contest, I know that.. but if they are giving away 100 bucks, sign over the check NOW because they are going DOWN!

I will even put up my OWN money ($1000.00) to conduct a few tests of my own.. but if I win, I get $1000 clams, if I lose I pay $1000.00. I guarantee I will be up! Let them try, they don't WANT me to be a test subject, I am a system admin, a Windows tech, certified MSDN, and a previous Windows(5,6, and 7) mobile user, I got ALL the bases covered.. I am sooooooo ready.

I think not being able to spell "lose" or "losing" without adding an extra "o" for no reason might be more embarrassing...

I will take that bet! I had a Windows phone.. no way it beats my Droid (Skyrocket).

I'll take that bet as well. No way it is beating my Galaxy Nexus.

You mean ANDROID or Galaxy S II, Droid is Verizon, Sorry for having to correct you.

I guess it will be, make a phone call, make a text, search the web for something, take a photo and things like that and nothing comes close to WP7 in those categories.

My phone has Zero shutter lag for pictures and 4G LTE. Yup I'm good to go.

No fair. My phone does so much more that it requires power.

So much misplaced confidence.

This is how it'll probably play out:
Challange: Twitter a few messages, facebook something, send an email. Open a webpage. Check social updates. (Or something in that spirit, with heavy emphasis on hubs).

This isn't a battle of snappyness or specs. This is a battle of the usability of the Operating Systems. Just by focusing on hubs Windows Phone will beat out the rest. Especially in social-media tasks (since everything is done from one place).

Actually, Galaxy nexus was the first to fall!!!!!!
LocalScout ftw!

LocalScout ftw!

Yeah that's because you are not aloud to use the 4G LTE. How about something like "How many pictures can you take in 5 seconds?"

I read aloud sometimes. What they're allowed to do in the test is subject to the fine print which was already posted below.

This is fun, iPhone 4s fell too!

OK, even better! I have a custom interface.. as I said I *HAVE* a Windows device, I got rid of it BECAUSE I couldn't get it the way *I* wanted it.. NOW with Droid, I do, and I do things VERY efficiently... So if they THINK theirs is better, let them PROVE it, against a CUSTOM MOD on my phone, I know where the Windows 7 mobile fails, and it's MUCH improved since moving to Droid, so *I* welcome their pathetic challenge!

Bring it!

Nobody is stopping you from going there and getting that $100. I was speculating on how the whole thing is going to be played out, and I was right. If you can match the Social/People Hub with mods, then you have a fair chance.

But seriously what's with all this denial. Why can't you guys just say "Well, the Windows Phone is fast in those tasks because it's built that way. But I love my phone more than WP7." It's that easy, instead of all these denials, trolling and flaming.
