Microsoft files patent for two-sided smartphone display

While we have seen our share of smartphone designs, nearly all of of them have one big touch screen on the front. But what if a smartphone could have two different displays on one case? Microsoft has apparently filed a patent that would create such a product. PatentBolt.com has posted up some images and details from the company's filing with the US Patent and Trademark Office.

The design would have a regular high-powered touch screen on the front of the smartphone, along with a low-powered screen on the back of the case. The rear screen could be used to display a variety of information. For example, it could become an eInk screen for people to read texts more clearly than on the front screen of a smartphone.

The low-powered rear screen could also be used purely as an atheistic feature. It could display images with limited animation that would serve as a kind of electronic skin that would make the smartphone look different than the norm. The patent says that the rear screen could even be molded into the case of the smartphone.

While Microsoft frequently files for patents that never turn up as actual products, the idea of a second rear display screen for a future smartphone sounds like one that could be made right now.

I thought this was a joke at first. Because they are currently releasing phones with 256mb ram and they are now thinking of doing this? Better do something about the hardware first and foremost

I see a circuit drawing that tells me the processor sends one signal to the front display and another signal to the back display and so there isn't a double sided display because this is just two displays glued together back to back - haven't we already seen this same sort of a idea, because I know Motorola did a phone with two displays and I damned certain some other companies done similar - didn't every tech journalist posting, blogging and podcasting themselves into a stupor at CES just a few years ago about laptops with a main screen and then another screen mounted into the back of the lid... yes they did, so really this is nothing new and given the parts anybody could make it.

How can you have patents like this, it's stupid. If Apple filed this they would just stop everyone else from using such a basic concept. Patent the technique, not the idea.

Exactly.

Don't most folding feature phones have two sided screens? One for when the phone is closed and one for when it is open. It's been done before. Microsoft is trying to file as many patents as it can to fight patent trolls and to become a patent troll (the money MS forces Android using companies to pay). And so they can counter-sue. But most of their patents should never have been granted for obviousness reasons.

Actually, MS isn't the first to.have this concept. Nokia and also this private company have panned videos of concept devices that had a full screen on front and rear screen made into the case.

that Nokia Aeon Concept Phone looked cool.,shame it never got released.

Funny, I had a thought about this back then. Remember when we had to iPod Touches up against each other to connect? Yea, I thought about this feature once. I should of patented this idea years ago. >_>

The first gen zune 30 was able to transfer files from one device to another device using it's own internal wi-fi back in 2006. I wish they bring that feature back into windows phone 8 / Tablets.

Of course, If Microsoft release a product like this, no one will care and all the Apple fanboys will gather together and try and s*** on this product as much as they can and then Apple will release a 2 sided iphone 2 years down the track and everyone will call it a revolution and magical etc. etc.

Quit trying to troll your Anti-Apple fud.

Well I was going to say he was right except for the part about Apple fanboys bashing MS, but it looks like you've covered that one too below:

Yay, a more battery drainer. How are they going to accomplish this, if they can't even make a dual core phone, let alone with more than 512MB and no SD memory card slot.

It would be hard to prove that you were the first to come up with it.

How about you file a patent when you get an idea, then after a fixed amount of years or so you are asked to prove that you have done something to reach a prototype.

They should change the law of Patents,
1st make a sample product, then file the patent!
