Microsoft looks to cash in on the iPhone

Don't think for a minute that Microsoft is ignoring the iPhone. In fact, the software giant is probing the gadget for profit opportunities.

For a little more than a week, a team of the company's Silicon Valley software engineers has been examining the iPhone software development kit (SDK for short), a set of tools Apple (AAPL) released this month that let outsiders build software for the iPhone and the iPod touch. Microsoft (MSFT) executives aren't sure yet whether they'll find worthwhile opportunities to sell iPhone software – but they seem eager to find out.

"It's really important for us to understand what we can bring to the iPhone," Tom Gibbons, corporate vice president of Microsoft's Specialized Devices and Applications Group, told Fortune on Monday. "To the extent that Mac Office customers have functionality that they need in that environment, we're actually in the process of trying to understand that now."

Okay here's my take on this one, First don't think Microsoft isn't thinking of coming out with a phone itself to rival the iphone. Right now first strategy is get in comfy with Apple. Learn how their SDK works, decompile it, examine how Apple was able to take a core version of OS X and put that on the iphone. Right now they are doing their homework. Then when they have a better idea as to how it all works. Yes they stand to make money from Office Apps and what not. But this is just the begining of something that looks like I said "Microsoft will come out with their own phone, and it's just a matter of time now."

Do you realise you sound slightly crazy?

No it would be crazy for Microsoft not to disect the iphone and copy it. Mobiles are the future, and the big players are staking their claims now. Apple changed things when they brought the iPhone out. It opened the flood gates and now the real fun begins. Welcome to the future because this is the next big tech evolution.

They're going to decompile header files and documentation?

examine how Apple was able to take a core version of OS X and put that on the iphone.

What would that achieve? MS already have an OS that runs on mobile phones.

Microsoft will start producing phones after they start manufacturing PCs.

now the question is will apple approve MS's software for the iphone if they do make anything

I found it even funnier yesterday when I read that apple originally bought the base code from microsoft, haha so all in all the 2 companies are very close

To the extent that Mac Office customers have functionality that they need in that environment, we’re actually in the process of trying to understand that now
i know, ms office for the iphone! genius... be productive, on the go , with the most heavily marketed phone out there right now

For some funny reason, that just sounds so dirty lol.

IMO, Microsoft should stop developing crappy software; they should just focus on keyboard/mouse.

IMO you should refrain from posting such nonsence!

Good for Microsoft - instead of trying to compete with the iPhone with a device that will more than likely fail they are embracing it!

It's nice to see Microsoft focusing on their core strength - software, rather than trying to simply "outdo" the iPhone with their own device (much like they have done with Zune)

Exactly - this way we could end up with a really good, multi-supported device, compared to 2 mediocre half-supported devices. (Seriously, we don't need a ZunePhone) Yes, I'm calling the iPhone mediocre, compare it to many other smart phone alternatives and it just doesn't match up.....yet.

Zune is a complete joke I think. I have not seen any hype in Zune market.

now what's wrong there is that you feel that you need hype to make a good product. the zune is an excellent product. it's interface is clean, smart, and simple. i like the software as well, i just wish they would be able to get it so winamp supports the zune, just the software i'm used to using. and lastly, i've had mine now for 4 months, and there's not a single scratch on it (i don't use a case either). the material they use is so much more effective than other players (hint, specifically the one you're probably advocating). my old ipod became so scratched up, i had to switch....... to a zune.......

This guy must be a marketing genious and of course and iPod fan

LOL market hype is the by-product of marketting success, in my opinion. I am not an iPod or iRaq fan.

Lol, I've NEVER Seen a Zune in real life, ever! XD

Maybe because it's not available in Europe, yet?

Really, because they are all over the place in the USA

Only place that I have ever seen them was a year and a half ago in a custom-free zone at an airport in europe, so obvesly they are in europe

They are in Europe. They sell them in germany in lots of places. I've just not seen anyone buy a Zune, nor carry one yet.

Eh the phone already runs as root so no need to worry about that

Even when running as root, you have to click on the annoying UAC prompts!

I hope that they will also evaluate what they could bring to WM from the iPhone.
