Microsoft: No talk about Xbox One TV features for E3 2013 press event

Microsoft's first reveal of the Xbox One console was slammed by many people, mostly hardcore gamers, for focusing too much on the "future TV" aspects of the hardware and not enough on the game titles. Microsoft has already stated that E3 2013's press event on June 10th will concentrate on the games that are being made for the console.

But will there be any more information about the Xbox One TV set top box features at the E3 event? It doesn't sound like it. Microsoft's director of Xbox Live programming Larry Hryb used Twitter to answer a fan's question on this topic:

That bit of news should indeed please the hardcore gaming crowd. In fact, Geoff Keighley of Spike's GTTV show posted his own Twitter message that indicates non-game features for both Microsoft and Sony at E3 will be on the backburner.

Neowin will be attending and live blogging from all of the big E3 2013 press conferences on June 10th, including the ones held by publishers Electronic Arts and Ubisoft.

Glad to hear, but they did say that E3 would be about the games previous to the reveal... I'm more interested in answers to the DRM questions...

They simply couldn't pull off another event in the same vein as the xbox one reveal. They were way too cocky, thinking they had the gamers already onboard so didn't even really bother pitching to them.

I think they've learned a huge, well deserved lesson from the backlash from that event and they would be silly do do anything but a completely gamer focused event at E3.

As a happy Xbox 360 gamer this generation, I was completely put off by their reveal. So much so I pre ordered a PS4 afterwards.

I disagree with you completely. More than a week before the event it was already made clear that the event wouldn't be about the games but the new features of the new Xbox and that the games would be at E3.
If you preordered a PS4 because of this, you are either completely ignorant or were never going to buy an Xbox One to begin with and just like to troll on the N4G hate train.

I was waiting to find out all the specifics of the Xbone before I made any choice to purchase a system this year.

Xbone is forever banned in my house and I'm making sure that all my friends know that it's a horrible system to get with all the DRM, spyware and other stuff it has.

I might get a PS4, I might get a Wii U.

I already have a Vita and 3DS. We'll see if this generation's consoles are any good or if Sony goes the same route as MS.

Congratulations sir. That's insanely stupid.

pre-ordering a system you haven't seen yet, don't know everything about, you haven't seen all the games for both consoles. You cannot make a more uninformed decision like that. Holy cow just mindboggling

XB-1 is forever banned in ur because they said that the reveal, was a reveal only???.... LOLZ....
I'm not gonna jump to that conclusion just because of the reveal...
They are IMHO 2 for 2 when it comes to game consoles... I consider the OG Xbox a hit and the 360....
And considering that PC gaming is the 'standard' mostly ran on Windows... I'm gonna give MS more than the benefit of the doubt....

If anything, it's people like you who need to stop breeding because you're lowering the I.Q. of the general population.

yes, because no used games, must be connected online, Kinect that sees you in the dark, can never be turned off, can see your blood really makes the system so good, doesn't it?

BTW, PS4? Allows used games without a fee, no always online, no DRM...

Hmm, just from that, the PS4 looks a LOT better than the Xbone does.

BTW, for those of you who say "wait until E3", remember this...

PSVita fans have said, for the past 2 E3s, "wait for E3", and the Vita is STILL failing.

Too bad, it's a great system.

Here is a link that shows that Kunect can be turned off... http://www.google.com/search?q...amp;hl=en&client=safari

Please provide proof of absolutely no used games on xb1...
Please show me where I can find all this information that u have gotten early...
If ps4 were absolutely no drm, why is there a petition going wound for it NOT to have drm...??
If there already no drm there is no need for a petition...
U absolute b correct, but I like to see things for myself...

Right, it can be turned off...

If that's the case, then why do they keep saying "you can turn on your Xbone by saying Xbox on" when it's off? But even so... Can you turn off the Kinect when you're using the Xbone? What about the whole recognizing your face and eye movement? Seeing in the dark? Seeing your blood and heart rate? Not to mention the patent that Microsoft took out that they could put into the Kinect to pay attention to how many people are watching a movie or TV and if it's too much, the system stops you and says you have to upgrade your plan to keep watching.

No used games part comes from the fact that there's fees for the used games, only a small select stores that have made deals with MS can sell used games and MS and the publisher, not the devs, get most of that money.

As for the petition for no DRM for the PS4, that's because of the DRM on the Xbone and people are worried that Sony would do the same thing, so they preemptively petitioned Sony.

Those are called..... OPTIONS....
All consoles have system Options...
Remember the PS4 reveal and the showed that move was built into the system now and could be used if wanted.... THats called an option...

Remember when they had the XB1 reveal and they said 'You can simply say 'Xbox On'
Key word is can.... not must... you don't have to have Kinect in a low power state if you don't want to... there is a physical button on the console, and still works like a traditional console would.

I seriously doubt that the Xbox would stop you in the middle of watching a movie at your own house to upgrade (honestly think about that one) because of the amount of people watching it...

Sony having DRM on the PS4 has been in rumor for over a year (just like XB1)
MS nor Sony have given any concrete information on DRM (and yes i would like that answered) but I can wait until E3 when the smoke is cleared and all comes out on the table...

This Gen I owned all 3 consoles (with the Wii being the only console to get sold off)...
There are 2 PS3's and 2 X360's in my househould...

For next Gen, I will only be getting 1 of the 2 big boys coming out this fall, since my now 8yr old convinced Daddy to get a Wii-U... So I will give both, Sony and MS a chance to bring it all to the table between now and TGS...

My mind will be pretty much made up somewhere by then...

The problem with focusing too much on TV is just that people outside the US know that sh*t is not even gonna work on their TVs. So at least in those markets they should make the effort and focus on games.

It will, contracts have already been made with television stations and cable providers overseas. Though most will not be available at launch, many will be on the Xbox One during the first year.
Most TV will work through apps that just relay IPTV through a in-home router.

Yes and //build/ will be the developer story...all how it should be. I don't know how hard it is for people to understand. It sucks because as a gamer, seeing all this bashing is so unwarranted.

Probably because people were expecting meat and Microsoft shows up with a salad.

Yeah it was...

What hits my nerves is all the people complaining that they didn't show games...
1st of all, 1st thing that they said was that the reveal was about the console, and E3 would be about the games..

E3 --> Games, Games,Games....

It's not like MS forgot how to do that part....
Especially with the Xbox going back to its computer roots as fas as Architecture goes...

And I must be opposite of everyone out there...
I don't want to see tv, tv, tv as they get closer to launch...

Get tv, Skype, pinching and opening thin air out of the way early...
From June 10th to launch I want to here about, XBOX LIVE, GAMES, XBOX LIVE, GAMES, XBOX LIVE, GAMES...

Correct and everybody seems to conveniently forget that it was a televised (on a very tight schedule) event, unlike Sony's. They couldn't do gameplay as that simply requires more time and is imprecise to fit in such a schedule. There were only a few game journalists there, the vast majority was from the mainstream media and they loved it.

If anything MS is to blame for is that it was only one hour long. They should have stretched it somewhat to clarify some things around the hardware and its use and perhaps even show some other game features. But I can't really blame them for that either, it will be for E3, like it was announced prior to the event.

TV will be MS's Trojan Horse and they have much more resources than Sony to pull this off, unlike Sony that tried with the PS3 and didn't succeed on that front at all.

Obviously you and most of the other commentators on here haven't a clue about how marketing goes.

Who cares if they announced a week ahead there would be no games.
Who cares if they promised E3 would be all about games.

Hell, they could have offered a gamer's paradise and said we'll have 100 amazing launch titles just wait till E3 and the result WOULD HAVE BEEN THE SAME. Its time to face the facts that Microsoft bombed the initial reveal; it is no different than going for a job interview and choosing to show your qualities that they aren't interested in first and then showing the qualities that makes you qualified for the job later.

First impressions are everything. They blew it, accept it and move on.

Ha, you're just another one of the hypocrites. For the general public, this was perfect marketing as the printed press has shown in the days after.
For the gamers, the goods are at E3, you know, ELECTRONIC ENTERTAINMENT EXPO, THE games expo that GAMERS watch?
If they announced it would be this way in advance then why should the announce have been any different? It's as if gamers have lost their mind, seriously GTFOOH!

I gotta admit, you made me laugh today.

When you decide to take the fanboy shades off and open your eyes, perhaps blinding sunlight of REALITY will sit in. As I said, the overall community has shown no one cared what they "announced" beforehand.

Obviously, you have never been in a situation where a first impression is critical. I'm sure one day you will understand.

No, this was perhaps a situation where FOR YOU it was critical. As far as MS is concerned, they had a good presentation as the mainstream press loved it. Kotaku already showed that less than 15-20% of the press didn't like it, so I guess you are in the minority. Entitled annoying and whining little gamers that think they truly deserve MS's complete attention when in fact they are an insignificant fraction of the total population that might be interested in the Xbox One.
You sir, are the one that is laughable!. Good luck at life as both consoles will succeed with or without your blessing.

And who's going to buy? The more the general public hears about the specifics of the XBox One, the more they hate it.

See, the fact is, this is STILL a gaming device. Guess who's supposed to be the biggest buyers of the system?

Gamers.

Guess what?

GAMERS hate the XBone.

Which means, it's going to fail.

That's what makes so many of us upset. We wanted GAMES, not TV, TV, TV, Sports, TV, TV, Sports.

Is that so hard for you to understand?

Yeah the Wii proved otherwise. That was a device for gamers that won the current generation and the general public doesn't go to N4G websites looking for bad news on a device. Gamers are insignificant, that is what YOU should understand.
But you're probably just one of those types that will still b*tch at MS after E3, even when they deliver the goods that they promised would be there and not at the hardware reveal and finally make a statement that puts them in good light.
Your comment below already confirms my suspicions. When you don't even know all the details without any confirmation, you already shut out the Xbox One, which makes you the same hypocritical type of figure as NinjaZidane and that's just pathetic. Just wait until after E3...

Edited by Thief000, Jun 1 2013, 7:49pm :

I do not think you know the definition of hypocrite...

Anyhow, gamers are insignificant? Haha...yes the target audience of the console, who they expect to sale too, and who they cater to is insignificant.

You are completely all over the place and unorganized in your rebuttals. You also are very out of touch with the current markets.

Anyone with any insight and, quite literally, common sense knows that the console is meant to play games and to attract people who want to play games. It is not meant to be a set top box, it is not meant to be a media portal, and it is not meant to replace a home theater machine. Microsoft added those features on and that is quite fine; their choice to do what they want with their creation. What you refuse to acknowledge is the fact that they failed to captivate the target audience (read gamers) with the initial reveal; the crucial first impression of a console that will be in use for the next approx. 10 years.

So again, put aside your blind loyalty and accept that your target of affection screwed up. It happens and we will see if they turn things around at E3.

If you had an Xbox 360, you'd have seen that Xbox has gone beyond gaming and now encompasses music and video and with the Xbox One it will include TV as well.
So target audience is much larger than the insignificant group of the core gamer. Contradict much?

Like I said "both consoles will succeed with or without your blessing."

Troll harder & GTFOOH!

/rebuttal

And you don't seem to understand, in both this and your previous comment, that the Xbox one screwed up, BADLY!

Even if they have the best games ever, the system will STILL fail!

Why?

Spyware! (Kinect 2 is always watching, can see you in the dark, the microphone NEVER shuts off, and it can freaking SEE YOUR BLOOD FLOW!)

DRM! (Used games fee AND the always online requirement) And don't give me the B.S. about "oh, it's only once every 24 hours" line either. How long does it take to check in? 10 seconds or 23 hours? Either way, you still have to have it online at all times otherwise, guess what? You can't play the games!

Restricting consumer control. This ties into the DRM and Spyware part. If the Kinect 2 sees that you have too many people watching TV or a movie, the system will block it off and tell you to upgrade your account to continue watching with that many people.

So, tell me, even if the system has the best games of all time, even if those games are MUST PLAY for the rest of eternity, what GOOD is it if the system has ALL of those restrictions on it?!

You sure as hell wouldn't use a computer or read a book if it had any of those restrictions on it, would you?

Not only do I look forward to seeing the games on X1 and PS4, but I also look forward to having to deal with all the bitching and rumors, whether they are confirmed or denied... just shut... them... up...

Games and suprises you say? Tell me more im intrigued, as to how your set top box will handle games.

jk. E3 should be good from both sides and a win for gamers in general.
